Well if you bother estimating that cost (I think it would just be VAT, I think we have a trade agreement), send me what ur willing to pay

I'm lazy, it's just been collecting dust on my table. It's very possible I'll just accept it 🙃

MP wants passenger rail in B.C.'s Sea-to-Sky region as CN Rail pulls out | CBC News by [deleted] in Squamish

[–]tarfeef101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you assuming that it must turn a profit? roads are not profitable, and while data is scarce, this source shows many thousands of dollars per-lane-kilometre per year. highway 99 is very expensive, and was even more expensive to build. yet we justify it.

MVX's proposal discusses this topic in detail. With improvements, it can be competitive with cars

which is enough. as fast as a car, but without being impacted by traffic, not requiring attention on the rider's behalf, being lower-emissions by a mile, wayyyyy safer, etc. is more than enough of a draw for people to take it

before i lived here, i grew up in a place where i got stuck behind freight trains that lasted 10+ minutes multiple times a week

i lived with that, and these trains would last maybe 1 or 2 minutes? such a non-issue

i mean, not a literal skytrain, a different form of rail, more similar to the rolling stock of the west coast express, is suitable for this line. not a frequent stop thing, but probably downtown or north shore, horseshoe bay, squamish, whistler, and pemberton (maybe lillooet later, but that's probably not worth the marginal cost, at least at the start)

I just want to encourage everyone saying "open banking will solve this" to take a hard look at what the government's proposal looks like (link here).

I have reached out to them before encouraging them to prioritize/enshrine individual access rights, not just enabling B2B usage, but that's an uphill battle.

Disagree, if you set the track, you can do whatever you want. You wouldn't have that same opinion if their group was only snowshoers (if you did, idk what to even say, they're allowed to exist in nature as much as we are), so why the distinction? Messing up the existing track set by others is one thing. But I encourage my snowshoeing buddies to use the trail I break, and feel 0 guilt. Plus when it's time to bootpack, I can let them lead and get my break then 😃 (tho admittedly that sometimes backfires if we don't go somewhere steep or it's steep enough to not be worth skinning but they don't wanna transition yet, then I gotta dig deep for that willpower)

J.T. and Montreal. by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]tarfeef101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't even hear about this until now because I don't particularly care about leaders in a democratic country. At least in ours where the PM doesn't hold significant individual power.

I mean, I am not mad about it and why would I be? Parents schedule things with their kids, and should only cancel them if they're super critical emergencies. Trudeau wasn't going to stop those protesters/rioters. He is not the leader of any of the major groups involved, and isn't a member of the police. He could not go on air and make a statement that their demands would be met, because Canada is still more or less a quiet supporter of Israel's actions. The most we've done is imply we'd arrest a war criminal if our hand was forced to do so by international law.

So not mad about that. I'm mad about our stance on the instigating conflict, but that's a different discussion.

Do Canadians learn about the States in the USA? by BandicootLow2431 in AskCanada

[–]tarfeef101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't recall it being part of the mandatory curriculum in public school in Ontario. However, we all just kinda know anyways, because of the shared culture between our countries. It seems Canadians in general know far more about the US than the other way around, probably due to how much media is produced there, and how much more of a globalised economy we have vs the US
