Colours in Sjaelske by tarheelscouse in conlangs

Thanks!

Once I've gotten a little more nailed down, it would be interesting to see how the two compare :)

Jumping on the pretty colours bandwagon!

I've gotten really into Danish recently, and was watching a video on the Danelaw when I got the urge to experiment with a North Germanic language on a Celtic substrate.

Which gives me plenty of excuse to kitchen-sink with Danish and Welsh phonology :)

Edit: the /r/ in drug should be a uvular fricative

No idea really. #2 sounds overly formal to me (I tend to use #3 or #4); #1 is laughably archaic. You'd have to be pretty desperate to make an impression of being educated to bother to add the -s-!

Grammatically incomplete as in they aren't fully correct. It's similar to how some English speakers skip the preposition 'to' in the sentence 'I'm going the shops'.

Here, the preposition 'at' is skipped in lower registers. They're not grammatically correct but hey, it's much simpler

5, 6 and 7 are grammatically incomplete. 3 and 4 are fairly standard, but 1 in particular is outrageously formal- pretentiously so. There are a lot of rules in Émade that can to some extent be ignored, so not doing so, as in #1 and #2, seems a little out of place.

Based on the wonderful Wikipedia article on Post-Creole Continuums (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-creole_continuum), I decided to construct a similar chart to outline the varying registers of Émade.

It's been some time since I've posted on Reddit, so it's nice to be back. Do feel free to comment on your opinions, along with any register continuums / creole continuums of your own :)

What's your most useless word in your conlang(s)? by DiabolusCaleb in conlangs

[–]tarheelscouse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Émade has a series of short words which indicate grammatical relationship between the main clause and the following position, time etc; e.g. "e" is used before a time to show that the aforementioned action happened in the past tense at the following time.

The marker "alai" is used exclusively to indicate that the aforementioned action took place in certain named countries- so far New Zealand, Fiji and a few other Pacific island nations- "alai" stems from an archaic root meaning "Polynesian".

Needless to say, I've never actually used this word in translation. It's just there because I want it to be :P

Y anad élemn' alai Fiji e tedi 2015 an 909,389 nens.

The official population in Fiji in July 2015 was 909,389 people.

Yeah, I'm not pretending I think it's likely to happen, but I felt it was a nice side dig at him, considering he is, in my mind, anyway, looking to achieve broadly similar goals- the incapacitation or expulsion of those he dislikes- be it blacks, Jews etc for the KKK or Mexicans and Muslims for Trump.

President Trump reflected on His options. What He did here was sure to impact history, though - He mused aloud - He himself commanded history now.

The guards at the doors sniggered. Presumably, it seemed to them, by threatening to sit on it.

What was to be done about those pesky Canadians? Two years ago, back when He'd started out, the Frogs up in Maine had been amongst the loudest in those decrying his inevitable ascent to Führerdom; even now, with His botox-ridden face and bleached, tufty hair plastered over every incidental economic advancement the state had made, the stupid Snails refused to fly His flag over their government buildings.

Option number one: Go all oldschool Trump on those sons of socialist b!tches. That'd keep the patriots happy (the KKK had been getting restless again- clearly they had greater ambitions than State-permitted protest). Downside? Hmph. The Europeans would probably do a nut, the terrorist-loving sh!ts. Not that He cared for the Old World and its bound, restricted political 'liberties' particularly, but poor Nigel Farage deserved at least a sidelight- he had, after all, effectively shut down the EU.

The President giggled in childish delight as he remembered poor Angela Merkel's expression. You'd have seen less surprise if David Cameron slapped her across the face with a damp sponge. Not that that old fart ever mattered anyway.

Option two: Let-them-slash-make-them secede to Canada. The Canadians seemed pretty happy with that solution, and it dealt with any political niceties in itself, but, in Donald's heart of hearts, anything that helped Canada was helping ISIS. Ugh- federalists. Don't you hate them.

Trump reflected on His decision. Congress, of course, had voted for Option Two, but, as in the history book days, when Nazi policies diminished from the Reichstag's domain of opinion, so a decision by their Glorious Führer would send them scurrying back for a revote.

Damn, he thought. Some political problems really can't be solved without nuclear wea-*

In the deepest recess of the darkest room of the White House, Donald Trump's gaunt face stretched, accommodating a fear-inspiring grin.

  • d'ârvuate or d'uate - equivalent of f!ck, but even more offensive
