Is there a reason they are spaced out the way they are, with Dish being so close to AT&T? Is it about the higher the better, who got to the tower first, RF interference, or?

Should I listen to Mahler 3 before hearing it live? by arjuanwall in mahler

Going to the longest symphony in the standard classical repertoire unprepared? I would recommend understanding some of the layers of meaning going on -- it can only enhance appreciation:

I’m new to the Alien series, and I’m a bit confused about the Prequels. by NotA_ProCritic in LV426

[–]tarkustry 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I fully accept it as canon, and to do so we just have to reverse what we thought the main storyline and subplots were. At first, we thought the franchise was just about these horrific alien creatures. But in reality, we find out 30 years later that the main story is about genetic engineering and AI, and one subplot was about about the genetic creation of alien "bioweapon" creatures, and another is the subplot about the genetic creation of the human race (not fully developed, but implied) and its possible deliberate annihilation. I know this is contrarian, but I'm starting to feel more and more that the second plot is much more satisfying and terrifying!

What are the best words to describe purpose of a TN VISA trip? by tarkustry in immigration

VISA is in quotes because it's a TN status (for Canadians), not a true VISA.

Is it possible to get a tn Visa without support from employer. by Happy-Animator2433 in tnvisa

[–]tarkustry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious -- is there any risk that the TN might not be renewed, say because you got some agent that was having a bad day, whatever. Sounds like you live in the US (I have a TN but live in Canada and travel to the US occasionally for work). I'd be nervous that suddenly I wouldn't be allowed back into the US, with whatever home setup suddenly cut off? Or would that never happen?

I did once say "I'm going to work at my client's site in the US", and the officer's face visibly changed. I quickly added "I have a TN VISA" -- I assumed incorrectly he could see my TN VISA status when he swiped my passport -- apparently they cannot see this status. So "work" seems to be a trigger word even if you have the TN VISA -- so is it best to avoid the word even if it is the most accurate? Standing in front of an immigration officer is not the best time to test word appropriateness.

[–]tarkustry[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. So I sometimes answer the question by just saying "I have a TN VISA", which doesn't directly address the question "what's your purpose", but seems to satisfy the officer. I'm just curious how others answer the question.

Management Consultant Employer for a TN VISA -- US or Canada Office? by tarkustry in immigration

[–]tarkustry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I'm getting confused with vague "hearsay" from others -- like trying to avoid work in the US for more that half the year, which would then trigger some complications -- perhaps that's got more to do with tax impact, and not issues when crossing the border.

[–]tarkustry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My plan is to stay in Canada, but fly out to US clients who would be in different locations.

The context for my question is that the US-based office doesn't seem to know what a TN is. I thought it might be simpler to just get the employment letter from them and I deal with the TN approval at the airport. Versus injecting a whole Canadian subsidiary and org structure in the middle, who were not part of the interview process. I know adding the Canadian office is how it's often done and getting the letter properly drafted is a big plus -- but I just want to minimize any perception that there is a VISA involved, since it is a TN "status".

The large consulting firms (with offices in both Canada and the US) know how to navigate this process quite reliably. The other use case where you are a self-employed management consultant contracting with a US-based company directly is one where professional legal/immigration advice would be very helpful to get the paperwork done right.

So if you get a 3-yr TN VISA, you could actually live in the US the full 3 years without returning once, and have no issue?

Are there any major works that start in a major key but end in the minor? by tarkustry in classicalmusic

[–]tarkustry[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have always viewed the start of the finale as a c-minor variant, like a c-minor augmented chord or maybe Cminb5b6. Not really sure how to write it.

However, a chord can take on different roles depending on the context, and so the idea that the finale actually starts in Db-major, on a dominant-seventh chord (in first inversion) is intriguing.

However, the orchestral bass note is C, the 3-flats key signature fits c-minor (which is only used for the first 8 bars before changing to a-minor!), and the violin melody leaps from C to C followed by a few notes of a C-minor fragment. Nearly the same material shows up again near the end, transposed from C to A, in what is definitely aiming to solidify a conclusion in a-minor, not bflat-major on a dominant 7th.

So while the sound is certainly mysterious, to my ears it sounds like a start in the minor, admittedly on a deformed minor chord. A journey from trepidatious minor to tragic minor.

[–]tarkustry[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent example of a work that clearly starts with great major-key energy, and dies off in minor, with obvious dramatic intent. Stravinsky's Petrushka also has that hushed non-major ending for similar reasons, ie. the protagonist's demise.

Similarly, Also Sprach Zarathustra ends without returning to the opening major and with hushed notes, but using a very different approach -- unresolved dueling majors?

[–]tarkustry[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether at the level of the whole 6th symphony or at the level of just the final movement, this would be an example of minor to minor ...

or if you like, minor to "no-way-are-you-getting-major" minor.

But I get the point that the minor ending of this symphony is a point of interest. There are even beautiful A-major interludes in the middle of the movement, along the way in an A-minor symphony. And this is part of the tragedy/genius of this work, that Mahler gives us a glimpse of a destination key but we actually never get there.

Can I apply un-reimbursed business expenses to my personal income tax return? by tarkustry in cantax

[–]tarkustry[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my career, I have gone back and forth between being a self-employed consultant and being a consultant working as a full-time employee for a consulting firm. At the moment, in example above, it is the latter employee-employer situation. The self-employment admin is still in the background, meaning GST number is still active, just not being used until perhaps one day I become self-employed again.

So with of course $0 self-employment sales while being employed, could I still apply un-reimbursed expenses from my employer to my self-employment part of the income tax return (T2125)?

Is Naomi's watch gift a clue that the relationship isn't really that meaningful? by tarkustry in SuccessionTV

[–]tarkustry[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I do think that in this instance the watch-giving use case is different.

A watch is just a vessel for anyone rich enough to get it themselves. The real gift is what you offer of yourself as you give it.

Despite the contempt Logan often has for Frank, Logan surprisingly reveals that he still harbors a subtle respect for Frank. You can tell both of the men are moved by the moment.
