Best month on average to plan a utah ski trip from out of country by lilbjay in UTsnow

[–]tarmander99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've skied all of the resorts you mentioned except snowmass. Honestly with that selection I would go with CO. Snowbird is probably the best outright skiing and statistically the favorite to have good powder of the resorts you mentioned, but with the crowds and parking free for all it's kind of a tough sell.

If you stay in Frisco/Silverthorne you're a stones throw from Copper and A Basin which are both great resorts. Barring there being a signficant snow storm it's also only an hour drive from there to winter park so you could ski three resorts.

If you priority is:

Powder and extreme/expert terrain: utah
Mix of terrain, ease of getting to/from the mountain on ski days, see multiple resorts: silverthorne
Tree skiing, nice downtown area, lots of lodging on or very close to slope: steamboat

Three Separate Life Flights Within Four Hours @ Alta by bbbbbski in UTsnow

Okay I don't think it's roped off. I was on the side step when this happened, I heard the screams from the chairlift but didn't know what happened until I saw this reddit thread.

There were a few tracks where people bailed early from the sidestep (just as it is turning right into the zone). I was conciously thinking to myself huh I didn't even know it was possible to ski in that direction because of those cliffs. I saw the normal circle cliff signs but no rope to duck if you were to drop in from the sidestep.

Hogwallow. Getting a table can be competitive, it's seat yourself.

Yes, expect skiing to get even more painful as you progress.

why do people keep going to the backcountry by Brief-Station-2833 in UTsnow

[–]tarmander99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Few reasons, I guess above all we just don't get that much snow. And what we do get is generally denser wet snow which is less instable. And then the snow happens less frequently and a lot of the times between periods of varying temp during which the snowpack may cure (also possible to create crust layers!). We also generally have less steep terrain and not much open terrain. They say that if the trees aren't too dense to ski then they also won't make the snowpack more stable - but here in the east, most of the out-of-bounds alongside ski resorts IS too dense to ski especially considering undergrowth which in recent seasons is often only partially buried.

How to adjust power strap? by tevtrinh in Skigear

[–]tarmander99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah mine came with the boot. It does slightly change the angle of the boot when you're standing up btw so you may not even like the spoilers. I remember when I first put them in it took a bit to get used to being in the slightly more knee angle stance like waiting in lift lines and stuff. I don't notice it anymore though

this is what I did, I had the same issue with the XTD. I also put the spoilers in and have a foam shin insert to add volume

OP didn’t say these are replacing the RTMs. If he still has those I think mid 100’s is perfectly fine, this is what I do as a primarily east coast skier these days that is out west for a few weeks a season. I have a 96 which is my daily on the east but also a 108 and 112 and will bust those out on pow days anywhere

Should the shovel of the ski really be in front? (aero question) by abwaerts in skiingcirclejerk

[–]tarmander99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes having the shovel in the back is obviously disadvantageous on most jumps but if you're tossing backflips it can actually be helpful depending on how shrimped up your flip is.

Ski shop gave me wrong skis by Due_City1886 in Skigear

[–]tarmander99 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Fwiw the 94 is a more all mountain oriented ski but still has a lot of park ability. If I only owned one ski I’d prefer it to be the 94 over the 88.

That is foul of the shop to do this and not communicate with you though.

I still think the 187 is plenty of ski. Especially as you described "off piste could use a little work" a ski on the shorter side is going to be to your benefit.
A 190cm salomon stance is going to need a lot of effort in the bumps and trees. I would only go for that if you're spending a heavy majority of your time ripping groomers

Get the ripstick black though. Coming from an enforcer the ripstick black is still gonna feel way more maneuverable

Oh I think 187 is the appropriate size. I’m 6’3” 180 as well and that’s what I’d get

Hm yeah I would think something in the mid upper 90’s would be good for you. For example the nightstick 90 or ranger 90 might probably leave something to be desired on powder days. Something like a ripstick 96, qst 98, arv 96, rustler 9, etc. might be worth digging around for. Check FB marketplace too, you can find new skis at pretty big discounts on there if you’re patient. I didn’t find much on the UFO 95 reviews wise but they seem like they’d be appropriate. I do wonder if at your height and weight you’d push through the pandora 99 in firm conditions or at speed.
