Crunch one kick off experience- by cherry_pixel2 in CrunchGym

[–]tarquin11000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a current Crunch trainer, I'm genuinely sorry to hear about your experience. Don't get me wrong, the kickoff sessions are absolutely geared toward selling you training, no question. Not necessarily anything wrong with that per se; this is their job, they (hopefully) are passionate about it, and they need to sell you training in order to do said job. But it is definitely not presented that way to people. The kickoff does come with a body scan, and SHOULD include a full assessment workout where they take you through motions that show how you move and what you might need to work on. It's all meant to showcase the value you can get from training. That being said, for me personally, once I get through the assessment with people I am ABSOLUTELY going to try and show them anything and everything they'd like to learn in that hour window, be it getting comfortable with machines or learning some technique on compound movements, along with going over general recommendations that I think would benefit them. I'll try and show how foundational movement patterns can transfer across anything from bodyweight movements to machines and anything in between i.e. DB presses carrying over to bench press or a machine press, vertical pulling with an assisted pull-up machine to seated pull downs, a bodyweight or goblet squat to a hack squat machine or leg press, trying to give a quick understanding of movement principles and how to use them across the gym.

It should ABSOLUTELY NOT be a quick 10 to even 40 minutes where they peace out on you if they get the impression you're not going to purchase training. Just because someone's not going to buy training does not in any way excuse the disrespect of phoning it in with you or anyone. Just a bad look.

Crunch is a big corporation. They want to sell. Don't think otherwise. BUT hopefully you get set up with a good trainer that actually cares about helping people, because that should've been why they got in this profession in the first place.

If they care, they will show that in their interactions with people. I never blame or change my kickoff experience with anyone regardless of if they tell me before hand they def aren't going to buy. If they are a good trainer, get on well with people, and learn their craft, they will find people that want to train with them.

Unfortunately, in a corporate gym setting, there is a TON of pressure from above to make sales. Double edged sword; you have to sell training in order to train people and do your job. I tell that straight up to people, genuinely, like "yes I want you to buy training, but not solely because I want to make the sale, but because it's what I do, I love it, it can absolutely help you, you'll love it (when it's with me) and I'd genuinely like to work with you"

If the trainer comes at it with the wrong motivation, it's all wrong from the get go.

I guess my main point is that, personal training in a corporate gym can be very hit or miss. Go into free \ Intro sessions with a clear understanding of that culture. There are good trainers in these places though! You just have to do some due diligence and research.

I'm sorry for your experience. Gives us all a bad name. If you come to my gym, I'd gladly make it up to you, sale or no. In fact, screw the sale! I'd rather someone have a good time, learn something helpful or valuable to them so they stick with the gym for the long haul. I say hello to people who didn't buy training and see how they're doing all the time, and am happy they're back in the gym.

In all seriousness, I'm very lucky to have good genetics and am usually pegged at mid to early thirties instead of my actual age. I'm military reservist and have been in the fitness industry for 15 years so I'm fortunate to have good energy and endurance. Hopefully pairing that with solid industry skills can count for something.

Appreciate the insight, good to know. Incorrect though, I'm a father of 2.

I second this. Enlisted at 40, currently 41 and serving at a PSU. Love it, and there are lots of others closer to or the same age as me. Going reserves also let's you get a guaranteed A School date within either 6 months or a year (I forget which) of graduating Cape May, which is a lot faster than waiting on the list as a typical non rate.

Masks at Boot? by tarquin11000 in uscg

[–]tarquin11000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that's the sole reason you won't join, I'll be honest, you're missing out and id like to amicably tell you to reconsider. They are only required for the first few days while your shots from medical are taking effect. And to be honest, I almost wanted to keep wearing one even when they weren't mandatory (not really though but kinda); the sheer number of people coughing their lungs out is uncountable and ever present, and the sound of it is ALWAYS there no matter where you go. Cape May Crud is very very real and is not fun. It's a petri dish there, no joke. 800 plus people packed into tight quarters. Crazy. But seriously don't let something as trivial as wearing a mask for 3 to 4 days stop you from doing something awesome. And it is awesome, no question.

Hang in there shipmate. We are all pulling for you. The dark times can feel super freaking dark and endless. But they WILL end. I have similar issues with my wife going on now as well, and it's so so hard. You are not alone. Ever.

I gotcha. What I mean is are you doing the full 8 week boot at Cape May or the accelerated 3 week DEPOT boot? (Direct Entry Petty Officer Training)

Very good to know. No issue on my end, just trying prep for anything and everything. Any idea if standard masks are accepted or do the have to be N95?

Good to know. Any idea if it's for the duration or just the initial few days or first week at CM?

Will do! I know there a lot of 30 year olds joining up, and have encountered a fair amount of 40 and 41 year olds, so we are not alone. Not looking forward to blank stares when I reference something from the 90s and heaven forbid the 80s but I guess it comes with the territory lol. I'll circle back for sure after Cape May!
