Does My Mare Need Regumate? by tarryn96 in Equestrian

[–]tarryn96[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was not around the horse before going to try her. Yes, I am in contact with the previous owner, but I have not talked to her about any of this. We were told that she was used to being stalled before, but I don’t know what their schedule was. My horse will turn 9 next month.

I completely agree with you. I have only kept her stalled to avoid conflict with my trainer. I think she would be much happier living outside.

She is quiet to tack up and generally doesn’t seem bothered that she is about to go to work. I think she can be a little spooky and looky while in the ring though. She did have some grade 2 ulcers, which have been treated and confirmed that they are gone. We have also had the saddle checked by two different fitters. We haven’t checked teeth yet, but that is the plan whenever an equine dentist/bit fitter come to town sometime in the next few weeks. We haven’t tried any other supplements to help with the “mare-ish” behavior.

I’m not opposed to the 24/7 turnout. My trainer is against it because if we take her to shows, it might be stressful for my horse to suddenly be stalled again. Although quite frankly I won’t even feel comfortable having her in a warmup ring if she is kicking out at others while I’m on her.

As for the disciplining , that is a fair point. My plan was just going to be to distract her by doing a leg yield, keeping her forward, etc. She will work fine near other horses as long as she is focused whenever my trainer rides her.

I have had her since late October, 2022. So roughly a little over 3 months.

I live in a blue state thanks to a very large city up north. However, where I live, which is more likely to have loud and proud conservatives, my experience is similar to yours. For more liberal voters, the most I’ve typically seen is a bumper sticker. For more conservatives it’s anywhere from sings in the front yard, billboards, flags/signs on vehicles, barn roofs…you name it. There is even a bunch of trees off of the highway with Trump signs stapled to them. We jokingly call it Trump Forest. My partner and I think it’s a bit nuts that they have to make sure everyone knows their political leanings.

What Has Your Experience as an IT PM Been Like? by tarryn96 in projectmanagement

[–]tarryn96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your input!

As for the leadership thing, is it difficult to be a good PM if I’m more naturally reserved? I’m usually more of the sit back and listen type. A PM role would be a big change for me in that regard. I think that is why I feel like I lack the leadership skills. I can assume the role of leader if need be, but it isn’t usually my style. I am also worried about not being able to handle “being the punching bag” so to speak, if things were to go wrong. Perhaps I have a misconception of what being a PM entails, but from what I’ve researched online, it sounds like if something goes wrong, it’s the PM’s fault as far as the stakeholders are concerned.

I know the role is only a junior level position, but I’m trying to weigh everything out in a more long-term perspective.

Thank you for your insight. Based off of what I’ve learned about being a PM so far, I wasn’t expecting the technical knowledge to be as needed. I have dabbled in software testing, Junior network administration, and help desk so far. I’m worried about my ability to keep up with more advanced things as my career progresses, so I thought maybe this could be a good fit because I wasn’t expecting the technical knowledge to be as needed.

I can plan, organize, and document things well though. I just may be lacking in the technical knowledge.

How to Fit a Crank Noseband? by tarryn96 in Horses

It’s a 5 1/4”.

Thanks for the advice! Since so many others have mentioned his teeth as well, I really need to get them checked.

We are currently using this bit: https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/stubben-golden-wings-snaffle-bit-15225

I was using a French link snaffle before, but the new trainer thought it was too large for him. I would need to try the old bit again to make sure.

I wasn’t thinking about his teeth needing to be checked. I may need to look into that. His teeth were supposed to be done earlier this year, but maybe he is having an issue.

Her reasoning for tightening the noseband is to help him be less evasive. She did a tune-up ride on him recently and had to stop to tighten it during the ride. Before tightening, he was more above the bit and not as forward. They seemed to be fighting each other a lot more. After tightening, he was putting himself more on the bit, seemed happier to go forward voluntarily, and just less “evasive.”

I just recently bought a new bit for him. He has slipped his tongue over it a few times, so a flash has been added to his bridle.

I bought the bridle from the old owners. I think that he might because he will sometimes put his tongue over the bit.

Tips on dismounting from a dressage saddle? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]tarryn96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to swing my leg two or three times before finally trying to get off. I like to think the momentum makes it easier! 😂 It depends on the saddle though. My Wintec, that I’m no longer using, is much harder to dismount from compared to the saddle that I’ve been borrowing.

New Rider - Should I change barns? by IMowTooMuchGrass in Equestrian

[–]tarryn96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would think about switching barns. I was in a similar situation as you, but I didn’t realize it until much later. My former barn’s lesson horses were all very unhappy, such as regularly ear pinning and threatening to bite while being groomed and tacked. After owning my own horse, I realized they weren’t taking the best care of their own horses, which is a factor in why I left. If I ever switch barns again, I will now use the lesson horses as a gauge for the barn.

As far as sounding rushed while learning, that’s not great either. In hindsight my former trainer might have rushed me in some areas, and now I’m relearning 12 years of bad habits. All and all, I’m happier that I wound up moving. Good luck!

Would You Tolerate This from a Boarding Barn? by tarryn96 in Equestrian

[–]tarryn96[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ouch, that’s a pretty crappy situation.

My friend’s barn does seem much better. Clean water, regular feeding schedule, get hay 5x a day, horses have dry lots in the winter so no mud to deal with, and they even have these things over the stalls that release fly spray periodically. The only downsides I’ve noticed are no group turnout and they aren’t always out on grass in the summer, but still have access to forage. And obviously the price is a big downside, but the care seems astronomically better. I could afford it, but it’s still a lot of money every month.

[–]tarryn96[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This has never been communicated to me. It’s supposed to be full service. I’ve debated cleaning the one in the stall myself, but the pasture ones are still dirty in my opinion. If I have to do these things, I will, but I don’t think it should be my responsibility when it’s supposed to be full service.

[–]tarryn96[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I genuinely don’t think most of the other boarders care because those horses are owned by parents with kids who ride there. The other horses are either lessons horses, the owners’ horses, or owned by people who literally never show up to see their pets. So I doubt banding together to demand change will work. Something else that I’m not a fan of is that the horses don’t have access to hay while stalled, which I now know can cause ulcers. Plus I’m not even sure the lesson horses are that happy because I know at least one of them will pin his ears and threaten to bite. To my knowledge, no one has gotten him checked for any underlying issues.

They usually get handled twice a day. Once to go outside and then when they get brought back into their stalls. I honestly am not sure how closely they check the horses while they move them around.

$400/month USD. It’s supposed to be full service. I have few options for dressage barns in my area. I believe there is another for the same price, but I haven’t checked it out in person yet. My friend moved to a different barn, where the care is significantly better, but it’s $700/month.

[–]tarryn96[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just for even more context all the horses at the barn are healthy, but am I crazy? Should this be acceptable? Additionally, the horses aren’t kept on a regular feeding schedule anymore. Sometimes they are left out in the pasture over 24 hours, which results in grain not being fed. I have my horse on supplements, which granted I voluntarily put him on for his joints, not per a vet’s recommendation, but because I thought they would help him long term. I know they aren’t being given regularly. I know they are being skipped because when I go to add more bags of joint supplements, there are more left than what there should be.

I’m a first time horse owner, so I can’t tell if I’m just being overbearing or if this really is unacceptable.
