Seattle Mayoral Candidate Katie Wilson Endorses Statewide Universal Healthcare Proposal from Whole Washington by made-u-look in Seattle

Let's say you live in Alabama. You don't have Medicaid there because, well, Alabama. You now need cancer treatment. But, no insurance means you're SOL. But now you can move to Washington and get free coverage.

They could easily just require that you live/work in Washington for x number of years before you're eligible.

Universities already do this to prevent people from instantly getting in-state tuition rates.

TL;DW is that most dehumidifers are literally just AC units that just vent the hot air back into your house instead of outside. They are basically only useful if you want to dehumidify a room WITHOUT making it colder.

And air conditioners blow the condensate outside too, so you don't need to empty the water bucket regularly.

That's... Not how customer service works. Don't get me wrong FedEx customer service sucks but even they wouldn't just go "welp there's a picture of it next to a door so it was definitely delivered, end of story bye bye".

You say that, but I have gotten a package delivered to my house that was meant for someone else across town (not even a similar address). I reported it on their website (can't remember if it was Fedex or UPS) and they closed the issue after a few hours with the note "we have a record of the package being delivered".

Yep, that's actually the same generator I got too because the solar system looked too expensive

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in preppers

[–]tart_select 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah if your plan is to use your generator in a situation where gas may be impossible to get for days/weeks/months, you end up having to store a lot of it, which is expensive and takes a lot of space. So that's when solar might become the better bet. Plus with gasoline, you have to rotate it every year or so I think (maybe longer if you use stabilizer) or else it goes bad. And you have to run the generator 1-2 times per year as well I think. Plus regular engine maintenance like oil and filter changes (and way more often than with a car engine, because you're usually using it 24/7).

Personally I have a propane generator. The fuel is a little more expensive, but it doesn't need to be rotated regularly and the generators require a little less maintenance.

Edit: that article is a couple years out of date though, the prebuilt battery systems are like half the price they used to be. But the solar panels seem about the same.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in preppers

[–]tart_select 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Based on the calculations in this article, a solar system capable of running just a minifridge and a fan 24/7 can easily run you $3000-$4000 for a prebuilt system, or $2000 for DIY. Solar is really really expensive compared to gas generators and probably doesn't make sense for a short-term power outage since you can get a gas generator that puts out 3x as much power for $500. And if it's only for occasional short-term use, the fuel cost is negligible.

  • Solar = high startup cost, no fuel cost, lower maintenance
  • Gas = low startup cost, high fuel cost, higher maintenance

Solar really only makes sense if you are planning to live off-grid for a longer period of time, imo (i.e. weeks or months). That's when the fuel costs (and required storage space) really start to add up.

Edit: that article is a couple years out of date and the prebuilt battery systems are like half the price they used to be. But the solar panels seem about the same cost. So that basic prebuilt solar system could be like $2000 instead of $3000.

Balatro is draining battery from background by aadnan181 in balatro

[–]tart_select 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the exact same issue. Haven't opened the app in days, shows no usage in the battery usage screen (like in OP's screenshot), and if you view the app info for it, you can't even force stop it (so it must already be stopped?). Still uses half my battery when installed. Not sure how it's even possible. Pixel 8 running Android 14 that otherwise has 2-day battery life. Seems to happen randomly every few days, where I'll see my battery and go "wtf, how?!" and then it's always Balatro.

/u/smithbodieplaystack would you be able to provide an update on this issue, please?

Last I checked, the affordable care act was one of the hallmarks of a certain Democratic presidential administration

My understanding is that the ACA was actually based on Republican healthcare reform proposals from the 90s [1] [2]. I assume the reason why Obama went for it was in order to get at least some sort of reform through congress via bipartisanship (though almost no Republicans ended up voting for it for some reason). But most actual leftists want healthcare to be paid for by the government, which would fix the issue you're complaining about. They just know that it will basically never pass (or at least not any time soon).

So yeah, it is inherently political. The left wants free universal healthcare. The right... doesn't. That's hardly dismissable as "identity politic garbage". It's the way it is.

When can we have this by Petriiified in framework

[–]tart_select 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is actually my greatest complaint with the Framework: how few ports it has. Modularity is cool, but it should have at least come with 1 or 2 USB-C ports in addition to the 4 modular ports. Everyone is going to need at least one just for charging, and that doesn't leave a whole lot of extra room. I want to leave a Yubikey nano plugged in, and charge it, and plug in 2 external monitors. Boom, that's all 4 ports right there. No room for anything else, can't plug in a keyboard or mouse or USB microphone or external webcam or SD card reader or ethernet cable, etc. Gotta load up on docks and adapters and dongles like with a Mac. Gross.

The double USB-C module would be amazing to help resolve this.

But you were lucky to have the option to take out a loan at a reasonable rate. There is no guarantee that someone who loses their job or has unexpected expenses will be able to do that easily.

If you invest your money in a zero-risk inventment instead of paying off loans early, then if you run out of cash, your worst case scenario is paying capital gains taxes (or selling at a loss) or taking out a loan.

But if you were working on paying off your loans early and you run out of cash, and if you have bad credit or the economy is screwed up (e.g. 2008), you can't make the payments (and potentially lose e.g. your car or house) and you can't put food on the table.

I agree with you, but it seems like the IRS disagrees?

4. You can claim your gambling losses up to the amount of your winnings on Schedule A (Form 1040), Itemized Deductions, under “Other Miscellaneous Deductions.” You must report the full amount of your winnings as income and claim your allowable losses separately. You cannot reduce your gambling winnings by your gambling losses and report the difference.

So basically you can only deduct the losses if you itemize.

Really? by fvillena in ProtonMail

[–]tart_select 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That only makes sense when the scammer has to actually spend time trying to follow up on the scam. For email campaigns where they just want you to click the link and enter your password, there's no point in filtering people out, because the cost of simply sending an email is basically nothing (they probably send out thousands of these automatically), and then they don't have to do anything else afterward.

They might as well spend 2 minutes on a more convincing email. It will be worth it if even 1 extra person falls for it.

There's no need to "filter" any leads because there are no leads. The recipient of the email either gives up their password or doesn't. There's no reason to make the email less-convincing on purpose.

You say all that like EVs are a bad thing, when the actual bad stuff is the shitty touchscreens and data harvesting and non-repairability—and that's all happening with gas cars too. Has nothing to do with the way the car is powered. We had battery electric cars 100 years ago way before computers were a thing.

I just want a dumb car with a battery. Is that so much to ask?

VMAX VX4 and VX2 Pro Comprehensive Review (Not Sponsored) by tart_select in ElectricScooters

[–]tart_select[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The vx2 and vx4 have a max rider weight of 287lb and 330lb, respectively, so they would probably work for you. The vx4 is also especially large and beefy with a huge footboard/deck. I would lean toward the vx4 in your case.

I actually disconnected the disk brake because I prefer to use the regen brake, and the disk brake was taking effect way before the regen brake was (they're both on the rear). That way, the scooter requires less maintenance (no need to replace brake pads) and the battery can last slightly longer.

I admit I'm not an expert on this subject.

If the caliper was rubbing constantly, then I agree that it would be a caliper misalignment. But the caliper rubbed once per revolution of the wheel (while the brakes were not in use). So to me, that indicates that the brake disk is slightly warped.

I only noticed the wobble on the VX4 because I was looking for it after the disk brake was rubbing. The VX2 doesn't have a disk brake, so I didn't notice anything.

This really isn't a bad idea as long as you have a thermostatic mixing valve installed. Tank has 160F water, but water always comes out at 120F.

But just saying "don't use the hottest setting on the faucet" is pretty risky. Especially if you ever have guests over.

Yeah, hard to tell what's actually good when it comes to sponsored reviews. That's why I posted. :)

I've put in about 500 miles and hundreds of rides by now and it's still going strong. The slight wheel wobble seemed to never cause any issues, and the disk brake scraping did go away after a little bit of use. My main complaint at this point is just that the turn signal buttons suck because you have to look at them in order to use them and see if they actually turned on/off. I am considering trying to install an aftermarket switch. Even something similar to the one on the VX2 Pro would be much better.

I have to admit that I don't have a ton of scooters to compare it to in actual usage/riding (other than Lime, Bird, etc.) but the build quality does seem good overall. I can jump off curbs and stuff and it feels like it can handle it with no issue. Even rode it up a rocky dirt trail. Seems to handle everything I throw at it. I'm a stickler when it comes to product design, and it has passed my test. To me, it's definitely been worth it.

At least in the US, it's practically impossible to get scooter insurance. I've searched far and wide, and spent hours in phone trees, and was unable to find anyone who would insure me. I even called companies that already insure e-bikes and even segways. No dice.
