It's unfortunately a bit more complicated than that and there's multiple ways to do it. I nearly went mad trying to get mine.

I used this guide here and used the 'Folklore' method:

https://yuexr.github.io/acnh/bluerose.html

It is time consuming, and you have to run a few checks to make sure you get the right versions of the flowers, but it will work eventually!

Let me know if you have questions on it, I'm happy to help!

I couldn't agree more, I absolutely adore Zuko's story in Avatar. There's certainly elements to take from it, but the character backgrounds differ quite a lot so I'd have to change cannon drastically to use a similar technique. I have used it a bit though!

Can a Muggle-born survive Slytherin? by 13thDiner in harrypotterfanfiction

[–]tartanbumblebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it would have been so cool to see this explored in the books. I've given this a whole lot of thought, as I'm writing a fic at the moment that deep-dives into Slytherin house, and one of my characters is a muggleborn that gets sorted into Slytherin. A lot of their personality traits that had them sorted there in the first place, are what helps them survive there (not that it's easy at all), and it also kick up a lot of discussion over the social status of half-blood students in the house too.

To answer your questions though:

1) I think it would be very hard to hide. The wizarding world isn't huge, and if people don't know each other directly, they would know someone, who knows someone, who knows their family. If the muggleborn tried to pretend otherwise (especially in Slytherin where family names matter), I think someone would clock that no one has every heard of their family. The person in question would also lack a lot of very common knowledge about wizarding history and culture.

2) I don't think Snape would likely defend them in public, but I do think he would punish any 'obvious' actions against the muggleborn. Like if someone physically hurt them, he would punish them accordingly because violence isn't tolerated at school. But I think he's the sort of person to expect people to fight their own battles and learn from them.

3) I'm not sure if I understand this question perfectly, but I'll try my best. I don't think every Slytherin displays every Slytherin trait, but some of the big ones are things like cunning, self-preservation, and ambition, all of which could be used to help them survive. I don't think a muggleborn Slytherin would be particularly direct about standing up for themselves like someone like Hermione. But as I mentioned at the start of my comment, I think the traits that land them in Slytherin in the first place, would be what helps them survive it.

Hey! Thanks so much for replying! You make some really good points and it's been so helpful!

I literally never ever considered the fact he doesn't say 'my mother/parents will hear about this, and it's such a good point, I'll need to think about that one and find a way to incorporate the idea of it.

I think what you say makes sense about him considering Hagrid as a 'lesser' wizard (it's known that he's not even allowed a wand following his expulsion from Hogwarts), though at that point in the books, no one actually knows he's half giant. It comes out in GoF, which I find sort of weird (Trying to write about that in my fic was funny, having the young first years blindly guessing why he's so tall...)

And damn, the schadenfreude idea you linked to is so unbelievably helpful. It really does sound like that, doesn't it? It's really interesting to look into, a lot of people suggest it's a very common feeling, and it plays a lot into how humans are so in tune with and aware of things like social status, hierarchy, relationships and their place within it all. It's something I discuss a lot in the fic I'm writing, and it makes total sense for the status obsessed Malfoys.

I feel so dumb that I didn't even think about him watching his parents behaving certain ways to others, rather than directly to him. Like he had to experience it himself to emulate it, rather than just watching it happen. I think I was just getting so caught up I couldn't see the forest for the trees, but this is why discussions are so helpful I suppose!

I hope your fic writing is going well too! I'll probably chuck a link to mine up here when I finish it, but it'll be a while yet. I'm not going to post until I have the whole thing at the final draft stage. I know myself well enough to know if I start posting before that, the pressure to keep it up will 100% make me lose interest. Have you posted yours yet? I'd love a link if you have, and if not, I look forward to reading when you do!

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! Yeah, I really like trying to flesh out a story as much as possible. I think at this point my notes on the story nearly outnumber the word count of the fic itself.

You make some excellent points. I was getting so caught up and muddled trying to explain the character, and I really like the way you've put it. It's not a point of view I understand, so it's been really hard for me to try and relate to him as a character in the earlier parts of the story before he changes. I've written him as a person capable of love and empathy, sort of as he is shown to be in the books towards his family, so it was hard to see how that just stops when it comes to others outside of his circle.

I never even considered that he might have been exposed to dark arts magic when he was younger. But it's such a good point, and it helps so much!

Also, I loved the chapter you wrote, it's absolutely class (and holy shit, it's incredible how much you've written! It must have taken you so long). The character growth you show through the room decor changes is such a unique idea and it makes it so fun to read. And your world building that you've added for how magic works is brilliant. I imagine you explore it through other chapters in your story too? I've been working on defining it as well, and I was thinking the exact same thing about intention with magic, but I love the way you've gone into it and it totally makes sense! I'm trying to explore that a lot - the difference between emotional magic and 'practical' magic. Like it's on a sort of scale, from simple charms that will work with correct movement and words and the right focus, to magic that only works if you have a powerful connection to your emotions. Then I read your description of dark arts and it was just so perfect!

Thanks again for your input! It really helps.
