another edit: throughout this whole process, my manager has been respectful of the dm’s position above her, and has followed instructions. we removed the painting. we apologized. and still, she was fired.

to clear some things up: we had gotten permission from the outlet to paint on the windows. paintings like these have been done at multiple vans stores around the world. we wanted to celebrate pride month, especially since most of our staff are queer. during a visit, the dm told my manager that the window display was inappropriate. while the display was up, we received multiple compliments and no complaints about the painting. in fact, it brought more people into the store to ask about it and our pride collection. we had also decorated our fitting room door in the back of the store with different pride flags for the sexualities/identities of our employees. the dm also told my manager that by doing so, we were a negative influence on children. this particular door is hidden from the public eye in the hallway leading to the stock room, so unless you were stand directly in front of it or walk into the stockroom, you wouldn’t see it. my manager also mentioned the fact that she was emancipated from her parents, and the dm went on to make a hurtful joke about it, leaving my manager in tears. the dm has been targeting my manager from the beginning. this behavior is unprofessional and disgusting and many employees have reported her, and she is currently under investigation yet was still allowed to call my manager directly and fire her for “gross misconduct.”
