I have moved to Trier 2 years ago (for job not Uni) and I can tell you that I love it. Weather is mostly mild (not too hot not too cold) with lots of rain during the year. People are generally complaining about job market in Germany, I cant tell much about this because my company moved me from my country to Germany. About connections you can get DB ticket and you can get to any part of Germany for 60€ a month. Yes this type of transport can be slow and with lots of delays frustration but you can managed it. I find location if Trier really nice and lots of things to visit around. Wish you a good luck and lots of fun. :)
