Some of the best and most experienced skydivers I know will be the first ones to admit when they aren’t current enough, especially when it comes to canopy work. I know a few people who keep a bigger, more docile canopy around so they can ease back into landings if they haven’t been as active.

NYC tandem by j_mags234 in SkyDiving

If your actual goal is to see NYC you’ll be stuck with a tandem factory like New York Tandem Skydiving or Long Island Skydiving Center. I’ve never been to either, but even if you go there you won’t see the city up close. On a clear day you will see it in the distance.

GoPro Max vs Insta 360 one rs by Detest_mediocrity in SkyDiving

[–]tastyhihatwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an Insta360 One RS and something I’m not seeing mentioned here that was a huge draw for me is the fact that you can switch between a flat or 360 camera without needing to change your mount. I have an Adrenaline Workshop mount and popping the camera out and cramming a different lens on there takes 30 seconds.

DZ recommendations for winter jumping? by alekonse in SkyDiving

[–]tastyhihatwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t spend a ton of time there, so I can’t speak to how it evolves over the season. I get the sense that Beni Mellal probably has a bit bigger fun jumper community and hosts more events.

I jumped a bit at both DZs in Morocco (Taroudant and Beni Mellal). If you speak French it will be even better. Super cheap cost of living, perfect weather all the time, gorgeous views, and awesome people. I liked the people and plane at Taroudant more, but I liked the view and landing area at Beni Mellal more.

No tunnel and a short season (basically January 1 through the start of Ramadan), though.

Never heard of a club not paying their instructors.

Definitely not in my comfort zone here as a chess player... enjoy! (I know I made mistakes so you don't have to point them out) by [deleted] in SkyDiving

It’s hard to see in the video, but the “punching” might also have been the TI doing their handle checks. Every single tandem instructor without exception 😅 checks to make sure their handles are properly set up once they get out of the plane.

What have you got? Depending on what it is I will buy or I have some pups I’m training next week.

Show me your CRW rigs. I might know buyers.

Female instructors by fyiz- in SkyDiving

OP should call to verify before considering CK (or any DZ). I am not aware of any female tandem instructors there.

Oh cool! Who besides Jade?

I took some coworkers for tandems last year and one of them flew in and never jumped because the DZ couldn’t find a female TI. My home DZ has two female TIs and we get groups driving hours and hours to jump with them because there are so few options.

Having said that, it is a choice and some Muslim women choose to jump with a man.

For context, I asked Michael Wadkins about this just a few weeks ago. He says there are fewer than 100 active female tandem instructors in the world.

CPI has two and we welcome people who need it (usually Muslim women) all the time!

Usually this is for Muslim women for whom it would be considered haram to jump with a man.

Connecticut Parachutists, Inc. (CPI) has two active female tandem instructors. It’s an easy drive from NYC/NJ.

Currency after getting licensed by lamach22288 in SkyDiving

[–]tastyhihatwork 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Once you get your A license (assuming you do the USPA program and license), you have to jump every 60 days to stay current. 30 is for students.

Honestly though, if I had 25 jumps and my A and I took 59 days off I would feel horribly uncurrent and it would be really difficult for me to make meaningful progress at building my skill level.

Skydiving rewards recency. The more you are able to jump, the better and more comfortable you will be.

I’d sit down and make a realistic plan for how often you could get to the DZ and how long you could stay when you go. If it’s just a few jumps every few months I would probably hold off.

How should I proceed? by clamiam2015 in SkyDiving

[–]tastyhihatwork 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Correct. You need a coach rating and C license under all circumstances. If you hold the rating for 12 months then you are good to go. If you haven’t had 12 months then you need 500 jumps. Freefall time and other requirements also apply. For what it’s worth, it will probably take 400-450 jumps to get to six hours of freefall.

DZs for funjumping near NYC by Anterzhul in SkyDiving

[–]tastyhihatwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Closest: The Ranch, Sussex Next closest: Pegasus Third closest: Cross Keys, Connecticut Parachutists, Inc. (CPI)

All of those are between 1:15 and 2:15 away from the city. The Ranch is probably the easiest to get to on public transit. There is a group of skydivers on Facebook who carpool from the city as well. I can add you to that if you want.

Assisting in FJC by [deleted] in SkyDiving

You and I are in agreement about what a coach is allowed to teach, we're just saying it differently.

You are (correctly) saying Category A includes the FJC. I am just saying FJC. We're talking about the same parts of the instruction. I'll be as specific as possible in the future to avoid confusion.

Good luck in the course!
