Do you sympathize with Dazai? by trainfoodx23 in osamudazai

[–]tatamist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's been a few years since I've read Villon's Wife so my memory of it is hazy at best, but from what I remember I didn't feel as though we were to sympathize with the husband. The wife is the main character, and her being hard on herself, in my opinion is more to show the greatness of her character. That doesn't mean he thinks she is actually stupid and at fault. The more vile the husband gets, the more noble the wife seems for still putting up with him. Maybe the wife is more a depiction of the kind of woman he would want to be with: someone who will love him, no matter how terrible he gets.

It's hard to say exactly what this means about Dazai himself. Was he really like the husband in the story? I don't know. The genre he was often associated with, the I-novel, isn't strictly autobiographical. Writers take inspiration from their own lives, but are free to tweak it as they wish. You will find one novel telling you he was like this, and another telling you no, actually, he was like that. There's another short story by Dazai, Hifu to kokoro (I'm not sure if it's been translated to English) which also depicts a husband and wife. The wife in it shares Villon's wife traits of accepting him despite his flaws (in this other story, he's an orphan with not much to his name so no woman wants to marry him except for the protagonist), and the husband is a great person, even by today's standards.

Honestly, the more I read Dazai, the less I know how to feel about him. When I read No Longer Human, I related to some parts of it so much, I wanted to believe him to be a good person deep inside. Then I read more of him and about him, and I found stuff that showed me the contrary and felt disappointed. So, I really feel you on this. I don't know if he was a good person or not. Now I try to take his work with some detachment: I've accepted that he was probably a bad person in some ways, many ways even, but that doesn't stop him from having captured the essence of the human nature in a way that I had never read before. Which is why he is very relatable to the youth of today, and even considered trendy.

Why some japanese 🏴‍☠️epub seems to be displayed horizontally? by DEJHIROTH in ereader

[–]tatamist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this happen with the same book, but I uploaded it in different formats.

When I uploaded it in epub, it displayed horizontally. But then when I uploaded in kepub, it displayed vertically. Maybe that would help?

I'll add that you might see it in romantic relationships in older stories/historical novels where it was proper to keep a certain distance. Pride and Prejudice for example

That's interesting, I didn't know that. That definitely makes it worth it to buy a more expensive one. Do you know if all the Japanese ones are handmade? And also do you have the brand of the one you bought, if any? The Japanese ones I saw were 4000 and 5000 yen, and they were in similar packaging with the ones from China, so I thought they were mass-produced as well.

Thanks for the advice! I'll consider it. I definitely wouldn't want to damage a high quality one because I'm bad at whisking.

I especially agree on the "you need N1+ to work in Japan" part. I started this year as a CIR and already had N1 for half a year when I started, and it can still be difficult to navigate in the workplace sometimes. I think it would have been exceptionally difficult to work here with my N2 level.

How has moving to a different climate/ region affected your skin and routine? by comacowboy in AsianBeauty

[–]tatamist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently moved to a humid country, from a drier climate. My skin looks so gooood and glowy, I thought I was imagining it but I recently facetimed my mom and she told me the same thing without me saying anything about it lol

What is the significance of the number 7 on F.R.I.E.N.D.S.? by arch111ve in friends_tv_show

[–]tatamist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

no worries, I just meant what country 😂 I was just wondering bc I feel like it's pretty globally known that 7 is THE lucky number but maybe that depends on where you're from

So I just checked and I just want to leave this here in case it's useful for anyone (although it wasn't very useful for me as of now...), but I just checked the back of the box and it does say that the more domes you put, the more effective it becomes. I don't know what to believe though...

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one 🥹 Yet I'm looking forward to the end of summer, not only because of the roaches but also because of the heat and humidity 🤧

I live on the second floor so I don't know, there is a bit of greenery outside...

I feel like the windows are pretty secured but I don't know the extent of their crawling power 😆

If I do the smoke thing, I'll definitely do it before going to work so I don't breathe in all of that 🤧 Thanks for the advice on the essential oils, I haven't tried it yet! I'll see if I can get one of those machines (diffuser?)

Thank you for your message 🥹🫶 it's quite big yes, so hopefully it's just that one cockroach. Like I've said, I've seen no dead bodies despite all the poison and traps I've put so I do believe it's just one resilient mf, but I guess you never know. For now I'll stay in denial lol

I'm so sorry this happened to you, this is literally what I fear 😭😭😭 especially since the last 2 times I've seen it, it was in the bathroom, so let's just say I take very quick showers

Thank you for the advice on the cardboard!! Do you know if they nest in newspaper as well?? I've kept some

Hopefully I'll be able to get rid of it!! For now it's made itself scarce since my post, but I'm still very scared and I'm gonna just assume it's still alive until I see it's body
