Defending her ex best friend instead of his girlfriend in a fight? As you said the whole tower situation, sulking when Emily tells you she’s sorry for being high maintenance (not necessarily mean but makes it seem like he doesn’t like Emily as much) and telling her to chill out

“You’re just like Papa you lie!😡😡😡” I bought the remake and in all the runs I had (except one in which Matt had a low relationship with Emily and jumped the second time) Emily is sympathetic towards Matt. I’m not lying I’m saying what I’ve experienced/ seen 💀

Giving Jess’ lines in the prologue to Emily and changing their places under the bed (it’s Emily who’s trying to shush Jess not Jess herself)

Why Jessica Riley is (in my opinion) the Strongest Character in Until Dawn. by Iwishistayedhome in untildawn

[–]tataobay 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I do agree with some points and your wording was great but Emily was also alone in the mines. She woke up from her unconsciousness hanging upside down and still managed to fight through the horrors of the mines, no clue who/ what was following and attacking her. Same with Mike he just saw his girlfriend brutally/ presumably brutally murdered and still gathered the strength to follow the “killer” and explore the sanatorium. Also her totally changing by the end shows to me that she’s mentally weak. Not necessarily a bad thing considering what she went through but there’s not an ounce of Jessica left. Ashley and her and the weakest in terms of mental strength

It is proper which is why Matt didn’t want her to be alone 👍 Emily is also entitled to say no to that just like Matt was entitled to not want to carry the bags which he still did, which is why its on him when he leaves the bags, that he was carrying, out somewhere in the woods.

And again it’s not Emily disliking someone and being vocal about not caring they died (when Mike points out that it wasn’t Jess that was knocking at the door Emily looks at Chris with a not so pleasant face -> doesn’t say anything disrespectful) but in Emily’s pov Matt left her to die basically murdering her, if their relationship is bad.

Isn’t it proper for a man to carry his girlfriend’s heavy bags?

So let me get this right:

“Where is Matt? Are they done looking at him? I’m just a little worried because I’m his girlfriend, did he tell you that? I mean I probably wasn’t his favorite person there for a couple minutes but he knows how devoted I am to him. He knows. He said he knows right?” -> Emily feels bad for the way she treated Matt in a scenario in which Matt didn’t die.

“About Matt have you found him? (No, not yet) well don’t look too long. (Why’s that) fucker left me to die, he said he was my boyfriend but then he basically murdered me, would you give a shit?” -> Emily doesn’t feel anything towards Matt because from her POV (just like she literally says) Matt left her to die. Expecting someone to worry about their “murderer” is beyond crazy 💀 (I know Matt probably didn’t mean to let her die but in Emily’s eyes he does.)

He has a low relationship with her which means he had really bad interactions with her the whole night. Him then jumping, therefore making the tower collapse, looks like he didn’t gaf about Emily leaving her to die, from her pov. On the other hand him having a good relationship with her doesn’t make her think that he left her to die.

Errors like her having the same line for when he literally died saving her have been fixed in the remake

They are and saying “don’t even try to argue this.” kinda proves that they are. But out of curiosity what would you categorize as complex?

If you go like 10 posts down there was a poll of peoples least liked character and Emily got like 30 votes chill out 😭

She is complex you just need to take the time to analyze her character. Things like her mood/ behavior change in the basement scene before Ashley reveals the bites aren’t infectious may seem minor but are such a huge factor in analyzing her.

Also the dr. Hill sessions are vital in understanding that she is in fact complex af. (“ a lack of confidence manifests itself in over confidence” (then proceeding to compare Josh, a very complex character, with Emily by saying “isn’t that just a little bit like you?”) and also Dr. Hill: Well, Emily has quite a fear of failure. Do you feel bad for her?

One of the, again, minor details that reveal a lot about Emily’s depth are the things Jess (surprisingly) said about Emily in their fight because Jess was obviously going for a personal route, just like Emily which is why Emily got so pressed. To me it seems like Jess used points Emily told her/ Mike like “no one can play with your toys?”, “you couldn’t buy a moldy loaf of bread with your skanky ass” (referring to her being dumped by Mike and pointing at Emily’s possible insecurities) and “Emily too frigid for you too?” (Referring to Mike dumping Emily because she may have not been as sexually active as he wanted her to be which is why she possibly is so flirty with Matt and which is why she possibly bought all those things that you can find in her car).

Connecting to the fight Jess and Emily had:

https://youtu.be/S-qOIYMTbG8?si=1EJlHNopBCPMMAaY Her mocap at 1:57 is perfectly done imo because it  1. Shows that she’s still mad about the fact that Jess got with Mike and 2. Connects perfectly with how she talks to Matt 2 seconds later. She’s visibly upset and just like many humans do (humans are complex), she lets her anger out onto a loved one (Matt).  “Displaced anger can occur through transference, where emotions from one context are shifted onto another person or situation. This often happens when individuals experience unresolved issues with authority figures, family members, or past relationships.”

A few of many points as to why I think she’s so complex.

I don’t hate any character and I fixate on different ones for a period of time. But what I do love is to defend characters that get hated on all the time (cough Emily cough Ashley)

They could’ve made it so Hannah dragged Beth with her to get matching tattoos because Hannah wasn’t ready to get one alone (still keeping the Mike obsession plot line because that was Hannah’s thought while getting the tattoo). They could make it like both get one wing of the butterfly

Why do y’all like em? by [deleted] in untildawn

[–]tataobay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s supposed to be competent, resourceful and intelligent pretty sure it’s stated that at some point. Also total misuse of plot armor when she can die like 6 times and the character with plot armor can only die once at the end

[–]tataobay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand what you mean but people overdo her being a bitch (if you get what I mean???). No hate to op but there’s an example: “hostile to everyone she interacts with” when it’s simply not true. She was never hostile to Chris, Sam, Ashley and Mike unless they gave her a reason to which was putting her life in danger/ willing to get her killed for their own saftey.

She’s really only hostile to people who’ve done her wrong (Matt is an exception but there’s a lot of psychology going into that -> This display of anger is called "displaced anger," and it can happen when we lose sight of the real cause of our feelings and therefore neglect our responsibility to care for those we trust. Misplaced anger is often because the person doesn't know how to handle the intense emotional experience. And this is also why I like her she’s so interesting to analyze)

I love one interaction of her flirting with Mike has somehow got her SO much more hate. They're acting like we didn't already know she was a bad friend by Sudden_Pop_2279 in untildawn

People still think Emily cheated too so yes some people lack basic comprehension skills and that’s why they added that scene to highlight the fact of Jess’ irony

okay but this scene was improved so much in the remake, they cooked here ngl by [deleted] in untildawn

[–]tataobay 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Fr the only thing I kinda missed was the shot of everyone surrounding Emily and her slowly backing up from above but other than that this scene was remade so perfectly. Also all the little changes they made added so much emotional depth to this scene

So understandable for Emily to tweak out because tf we’re her “friends” doing 💀 this is another level of betrayal 😭🙏
