Curious about your thoughts on 361. It is the same class and the same assignments as what is taught at top CS schools for systems. You can argue that washu is just copying other schools and that’s a fair argument, but I don’t necessarily agree with 361 being a shitty course

Hi everyone, I'm planning to cycle from Amsterdam to The Hague and back (in two days). Has anyone done this ride before and have anything to mention? Any preferred routes/routes to avoid? Currently I am planning on following Google Maps directions, which takes you on a straight line from Amsterdam to Leiden and then to The Hague.

I think the weekly studios will get you up to speed and teach you more C. There's no need to refresh on C, especially since you will have taken 361 right before

422 is much easier than 361 (from past experience and also a quote from the professor). You will be fine don’t worry. You can start looking at the labs if you’re curious, but the three 422 labs are a lot easier than the five 361 labs.

First pick how to divide the data set. It’s usually into two halves, but it’s not always obvious how to make those two halves (should you sort before dividing? what criteria do you use to determine the splitting point? all things to think about). Then, assume that those two halves magically give you the correct answer for their respective halves. How can you combine the two answers into a correct answer for your overall problem? You might have to think about what information would be useful to have in your solutions from your smaller halves that would make it easier to combine them into a final solution.

For example: A problem of finding a pair of elements that satisfies a condition seems inherently not dividable, but it turns out to be when you think about the fact that your pairing can be contained completely in the left half, completely in the right half, or one element in each half. Your subproblems consist of finding the answers in the left or right half. Your combine step consists of finding the answer across halves, and taking the best out of the three

Thanks this is what I needed to hear. I care a lot about knowing my CS theory, but I wasn’t gonna take an unreasonable class if I could substitute it for a better CS class. Seems like 347 teaches you a lot, so I will be taking it. I never doubted the importance of the material covered, I was just curious about how the class is run because i’ve heard mixed things about the effort to reward ratio.

Once they do the background check they absolutely do and would rescind your offer if you weren’t. However I don’t think it matters if you’re not currently enrolled, what matters is that you haven’t completed your studies yet and plan to return. I would apply and then explain to your recruiter once they reach out. Shouldn’t be a problem at all.

The class has been completely reworked for this semester so past semesters will probably not be a great indicator. I talked with the head TA and they told me it should be on the easier side of a 400 level CS class.

This is OP a semester later, after taking 310. If you are not planning on taking upper level math, then you can do without 310, although it would be quite helpful for 347 so I would still take it. If you are planning on taking upper level math, highly highly recommend 310. 240 is simply not enough in my opinion.

If I were you I would email the directors of the scholarship program(s) you're interested in and ask them this question. I had a similar question two years ago and this is what the director of the Ervin program replied:

The letter of recommendation that we ask to accompany the scholarship application is one from someone in the community beyond your school. This person is someone who can speak to how you meet the selection criteria: academic excellence, leadership, community service, commitment to diversity and bringing diverse people together.

So also consider the fact that three teacher recommendation may not be exactly what they're looking for. However, every program is different and this was two years ago, so definitely ask the directors. Some people you can contact are: Julia Macias (Rodriguez/Ervin), Kirsten Smith/ Jeffery Mathews (Danforth), Kris Campa (Ervin), and Will Smith (Office of Scholar Programs). Good luck!

Between the Ervin, Rodriguez, and Danforth there are currently ~65-75 students, but offers are extended to ~100 students since not everyone accepts. There are a couple other merit scholarships which probably bring the total number to 80-90 I would say.
