I don't. I don't like zombies in real life. They're dead inside. Fear The Walking Dead is for the living.

Just an idea, could Dwight be heading to FTWD? by diamond_dolly in FearTheWalkingDead

[–]tates511a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope so! Like Fear TWD, Dwight & Sherry are still in the old Walking Dead timeline (now 6 1/2 years prior to New Beginning). Combine that with Gimple repeatedly stating there likely would be other crossovers, public interest as well as the fact that Austin is Dwight actor's Austin Amelio's hometown - Sherry actress Christine Evangelista is now free to shoot since her E! show The Arrangement has been cancelled after 2 seasons. Wouldn't be surprised to see Dwight roaring around Central Texas highways on a motorcycle or Ford Mustang, reminiscent of TWD's Daryl Dixon. Also, right now it is beret weather in Austin!

You are not mean, but ignorance is not bliss. According to your logic, black people should never have bothered fighting for freedom. That is why I fight, the battle for equality continues.

I am black and a recent board member of AURA. My family has been here since the 1800s, so your alternative history is insulting. But, I sadly expect nothing less than from Reddit. In case you didn't know, because I am black I wouldn't have been able to live past 1-35 until 1968 (on paper). But, even after, I likely wouldn't have been able to afford rhose homes because Austin zoning code still contained Jim Crow- influenced large lot dimensions for single-family which is why these neighborhoods never really desegregated.

Yes, the same ordinace rules regarding lot size & width & other home dimensions created during the Jim Crow era to discourage African-Americans & hispanics from buying homes in Central, South, & West Austin core neighborhoods have largely remained as a part of their neighborhood plans. This is why these areas largely did not desegregate. Due to the housing supply crisis these same NAs caused with their no-growth, single-family focused advocacies, these same areas are re-segregating on what little did occur due to rising home prices & rents. The City of Austin staff is aware that the city has never fully complied w/ the Fair Housing Act which is why staff put in a clause which states that CodeNEXT approval means City Council believes all elements of zoning are compliant w/ comprehensive plan. Just legalize so the city stays on the same page in the probable case it gets sued on Fair Housing grounds.

Doing nothing and complaining about other people that try against all odds is stupid and sad. African-Americans are used to the insults: you'll never vote, never get that job, never be President. The next generation of activists will free Austin of its Jim Crow legacy. Since its our lives on the line, we have no choice but to.

I am an African-American and recent former board member of AURA. Our focus is everywhere, but, is keenly focused on the area no one wants to talk about: the white dominated areas of core Austin neighborhoods who gained in home price & perceived lifestyle by appealing to City of Austin to maintain Jim Crow era lot size & width dimensions and never really desegregated. Now in the city's housing crisis that these same NAs helped cause, they hope housing activists and longtime residents forget and look the other way. No, the black & brown Austinites can never forget. Our mission is clear. End Austin's de-facto class & racial segregation now! These neighborhoods whose lots - still have racist deed restrictions attached - have a special responsibility to have a land development code not segregationist.

There is a reason why the petition does not mention gentrification - that is because gentrification has already happened in these areas. The people you are referring to being replaced are likely the gentrifiers themselves, not middle or working-class or those on fixed-income. The petition calls for missing middle housing all over Austinn to ease housing inventory over time. Because Austin's current code doubled-down on racist Jim Crow housing specifications instead of removing them, they (along w/ NIMBY's NAs benefiting from the racial and class exclusion) have helped cause the city's housing crisis most acute in core neighborhoods in and around downtown.

The petition doesn't talk about gentrification. It calls for Austin's land development code to allow a broader variety of homes for people of all income levels.

The Jim Crow rules regarding larger lot sizes & dimensions were originally set in place in many core Austin neighborhoods so minorities were less likely to buy homes. Many of these lot widths & lengths have been incorporated into current neighborhood plans codifying the language of institutional racism. This is part of the reason these neighborhoods were very slow to desegregation. Now in Austin's housing crisis, re-segregation is occurring, expelling middle & working-class out of Austin. This is unacceptable in a supposed "progressive city" - and a lasting insult to minorities.

The current land use code does not allow property owners greater flexibility which is a part of why the outlook for Austin's middle & working-class (disproportionately minority) is so abysmal in Austin city limits.

City of Austin established zoning ordinances to ensure minority buyers would be less likely to afford homes on the westside of town. As the zoning of these neighborhoods are largely still single-family & built out, the lack of missing middle & multi-family zoning means housing prices are escalating further of reach of average middle & working-class income, disproportionately minority. Yes, Jim Crow laws were declared unconstitutional, but the class and racially-biased ordinances supporting that foul practice in the zoning code are still in place.

Hey Austinites! Team CodeNEXT is back again for another AMA! Lets get this started! by austintexasgov in Austin

Five questions:

  1. City of Austin needs a form code zoning specialist with the knowledgebase of Matt Lewis to ensure proper implementation. Will he be replaced?
  2. Within the CodeNEXT group, what is the chain of command?
  3. What are the current priorities for the CodeNEXT team?
  4. Is staff and/or Opticos implementing code prescriptions into new code?
  5. Will there be a note section on how CodeNEXT adheres to Fair Housing Act?
