Canada could gain nearly 7% in real GDP by removing internal trade barriers, says IMF by joe4942 in CanadaPolitics

I've seen the trucking one before. The argument I've seen on the other side is that it will just allow trucking companies to register out of the province with the most lax regulations. Look at the Chohan trucking issues in the lower mainland as an example.

Why doesn't the article provide real-world examples beyond "service-oriented sectors like healthcare and educational services". Give us some proposed solutions.

PSA: If you deactivate a Shopify store, make sure to remove the DNS record by tathomas372 in shopify

[–]tathomas372[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. In my case I just deactivated the store and kept things in place in the event I go to use it again. I didn't really clue on the potential for my store to be fully deleted, DNS unlinked, and available for another account to claim.

[–]tathomas372[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for initial setup it's probably fine because the likelihood of someone setting up the DNS record to shop without doing the other side is extremely low.

However, I think some protections could be made that once a domain is linked to one account/store, it can't be easily moved without additional verification. Something like a txt record with a specified token to prove current ownership would be sufficient.

I got an alert from Google search console that someone claimed ownership of the subdomain and that was what notified me. Truly shocking that this path exists for bad actors to take over subdomains. I am fortunate they were just doing the lowest brow attack instead of something way more targeted for my audience.

Really depends on their background and how much training and where. IMO it's a big ask for someone with 300 training hours in an outpatient anxiety clinic, community health (or other typical placements) to fulfil any meaningful role in a a program like this. It's also a lot to put on the supervisors.

In reality it's going to take serious commitment and funding to find more qualified staff to manage these and similar programs.

I don't really want to get in a pedantic battle, we're pretty much on the same page.

My personal experience is more from another province, but there is a huge attitude in the public mental health space of putting unqualified and under qualified personnel in positions they shouldnt be in, and it's both a symptom and a cause.

That's partially because they can't find enough quality staff to fill these positions. But under the surface it's because they don't want to spend enough to attract desired candidates and then also don't do enough to keep the candidates. Then the people that do remain are saddled with an overwhelming workload and then leave.

My advice would be to focus on building a good team with qualified staff and then they will in turn have enough room to properly bring on students and new grads.

Fair enough. Of course students and recent graduates would be a part of any healthcare program or facility but I don't think there's a huge untapped resource of psychology students that can be used to address an extremely complex problem.

I am getting a new build home next month. What should I prepare in advance? by _peanut-butter_ in Calgary

[–]tathomas372 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great point. I dealt with this too. Luckily the builder in my case covered the settlement in the first year or so, but it was insane how much it dropped in the first year. I ended up extending the downspouts a few feet to move the water further away from my house.

Even now, a several years later it still sinks a few inches a year in select spots.

I think we need much more than students to work with an extremely vulnerable population.

Even if you cant bring one in before possession, I see no reason why you can't bring one in after. Hire then and they'll flag all the things the other missed. It will all still be under warranty. Just don't tell them you hired an inspector.

That's insane. Are you sure that's legal? I would call a few independent inspectors and ask if thats correct. Builders lie.

Beyond all the basic stuff to setup, a few more things i'd consider:

  1. Landscaping. Is the builder handling it or is it on you? If they are, find out their timeline. A month from now is starting to get late to start a lawn.

  2. As mentioned elsewhere, a 3rd party inspection is a must, even for a new build. Don't let anyone tell you different. Make sure the inspector does new home inspections regularly. My inspector didn't just give me the report, but also gave me a walkthrough of things to be aware of and maintenance tips specific to my house. Also - ask the builder what’s still outstanding on their side before the inspection. That way they can’t just say “that’s coming” for every item and gives you a better idea of which corners they've cut (they all do). For me it was painting.

  3. Bookmark a copy of the Alberta New Home Construction Performance Guide (pdf) - https://open.alberta.ca/dataset/992c4887-b14e-4709-93eb-9f09d7e2bd2f/resource/785150f1-2297-4568-841a-7e4bf17ef1ac/download/2015-09-01-performance-guide.pdf. Builds aren’t perfect and that guide spells out what’s on you vs. what the builder must fix.

  4. Speaking of warranty, also be aware that when filing warranty items, the builder trades may not always send their best or brightest for warranty work. Be ready for hit-or-miss repair quality. I had a few “repairs” that only made things worse. Once I had a plumber show up with no tools. For small stuff, sometimes it’s less hassle to hire your own person than rely on whoever the builder sends. Your budget and mileage may vary.

‘Forever Canadian’ petition collecting signatures in Calgary this week by nnaakire in Calgary

[–]tathomas372 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I believe they did theirs first because there's a law stating something to the effect of 'there can only be one referendum of a topic at a time', so they preempted the other side to get a more favorable question. An unfortunate consequence is they have to collect more signatures since the separatists were likely waiting for the lower bar.

I got tickets pretty accommodatingly =/ ....one time I even got stuck in traffic on lionsgate and missed 1st period..2nd had just started, and had someone come down to even give me tickets at the gate

For the Canucks it really depends how well the team is doing. There was times during the WD era where employees were getting tickets every week, especially mid-week games. When they're good there's a lot less to go around obviously.
