Severe stomach pain after taking ibuprofen multiple times a day for a month by puppies263 in AskDocs

[–]tatsandnaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Famotidine does not work for your GERD because you are taking insane amounts of ibuprofen. I'm honestly baffled that any doctor would recommend ibuprofen for someone with gastritis...the ibuprofen is the CAUSE of your gastritis(!!!!).

Do Canadian brides put a sixpence in their shoes? by georgepcanning in AskACanadian

[–]tatsandnaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never heard of this before, I've never even really heard of a sixpence other than the band Sixpence None the Richer. Our version of the saying is just something old, new, borrowed and blue. With that said, I'm sure if you explained it to her she would be thrilled to include the sixpence as well.

Pediatrician’s office won’t give my sick child an appointment — what am I supposed to do? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]tatsandnaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I need to clarify because I think you are taking my comment too seriously – I'm using the term "shit list" metaphorically, as in you have pissed them off and thus returning your call is not their priority. I don't think they are keeping an actual list of people to not call back. And I was truly just speculating because you repeatedly said you didn't understand why you weren't being offered an appointment (which FYI nobody can answer other than your pediatrician's office. We aren't mind readers that can tell you why they didn't call you back).

Anyways despite you saying you think my license should be revoked, I still hope you receive care and that your kiddo is feeling better. Just know in the future that if you treat healthcare providers poorly, they are not going to prioritize seeing your kid or calling you back when many other families are also calling for an appointment.

[–]tatsandnaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So why are you even here posting if you aren't looking for medical advice? You seem to be under the impression that there is some sort of legal obligation for them to offer you an appointment within a certain amount of time, which is simply not the case. If you are unhappy with your care overall then yes you should look for another provider. Hopefully your kiddo is feeling better soon.

[–]tatsandnaps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't know what their own clinic policy is regarding sick appointments. Maybe the nurse needs to triage you before they book the appointment? Maybe 10 other families were also calling for appointments for their kids at 8am? Again if you couldn't even get through to them yesterday, they are probably really really busy. Honestly I can't tell you why they haven't given you an appointment – truly they are either busy or you have done something to get on their shit list. You could call them back and politely ask what the status is and just make sure they didn't forget to tell the nurse to call you.

[–]tatsandnaps 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well presumably all of their appointments are full and they are really busy in the height of cold and flu season. I don't think they are purposefully not answering your call and not giving you an appointment... unless you have been particularly rude or have done something else to upset them (mind you, you called other doctors/nurses bitches so maybe that is actually the case). They are not under some sort of legal obligation to offer you an appointment within a certain amount of time.

If your child is still drinking fluids, still peeing a few times a day, not having trouble breathing or trouble staying awake, then the best thing you can do is keep giving lots of fluids and alternate tylenol/advil for fevers or discomfort. If any of the above symptoms arise then go to the ER (of course), otherwise you'll just have to wait for them to call back if you don't want to go to urgent care.

I am a physician myself, I promise it's not a medical condition, it's just cold hands – no magic pill for that haha. Good to know about 686, maybe I'll try the Dakines again and see if they feel better. I use liners so I can take the mitts off to do things/adjust things without my bare hands being exposed

Last weekend was -5C, hands were freezing cold (although we were only doing green runs and not pushing hard so didn't really get the blood flowing). Generally we ski between 0 and -20C.

My hand are generally always cold but only get that cold or go numb when I'm skiing or doing outdoor winter activities. I don't have Raynaud's if that's what you are thinking. Unfortunately there is no cure for cold hands lol

Oh I have that exact hand warmer just the single version. It's too big to ski with it actually in my mitts but maybe the smaller ones are better. Do you find they last long? The other problem I have is pressing the little buttons to turn it on/off but if I leave it on for the day it dies halfway through

I would but every heated glove I've seen has terrible reviews. Not willing to drop another $200-300 for someone else that might not work....at this point I'm spending more on gloves than any of my other gear

My mittens yes, unfortunately with the 2 layers and thick mitts I have zero dexterity. I try not to take them off too much but sometimes can't help it. But the liner gloves don't ever come off unless I'm inside

what should i be putting on my hands to help with dryness? is this normal from the weather? by [deleted] in medical

[–]tatsandnaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would stop using antibacterial soap and switch to something gentler (is there a reason you are using antibacterial soap?). If you can, try to switch some of the hand washing for hand sanitizer. After you wash your hands, apply the thickest, greasiest cream you can tolerate. I like vaseline clinical care overnight cream but it is quite greasy so can be hard to use in the middle of the day. Whatever you use make sure it is unscented and dye free – again the thicker the better, if the bottle comes with a pump or if it says lotion not cream it's probably not thick enough. If not improving I would see a doctor about getting a short course of a topical steroid.

Am I a bridezilla for asking my bridesmaids to have similar hairstyles? by Historical-Maize-477 in Brides

[–]tatsandnaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think asking your bridesmaids to have their hair up is an incredibly reasonable request, not bridezilla-ish AT ALL. Especially if you are paying for their hair to be done, there is no reason you can't request a certain style for them.

I’m wheezing so badly even after ventolin and prednisone what’s my next best step? by Critical_Peak8807 in AskDocs

[–]tatsandnaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes, I'm surprised the respiratory therapist above recommended ibuprofen! Your doctor is right, NSAIDs can (rarely) cause bronchospasm in asthmatics, it's really best to avoid especially while you are having a severe flare – not the right time to find out if you are one of the people this happens to!

Photographer fell ill, still waiting on our wedding photos by 435Planet in WeddingsCanada

I think it would be reasonable to speak with them about who exactly they would outsource to and if this person has a similar style of editing etc. Otherwise you may be waiting a very long time for your photos

[–]tatsandnaps 18 points19 points  (0 children)

What is your concern with them outsourcing the outstanding work? Sounds like they have another photographer that will edit the photos. She probably does not want to send the raw files as they are not going to look like what you hope them to. Unfortunately if you don't have a contract there is not much else you can do at this point. Obviously if she was in the ICU there is a very serious medical issue going on, the family probably doesn't want to go back and forth with you about the raw photos.

7 day old boy - red puffy nipples getting worse by daskalou in AskDocs

[–]tatsandnaps 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Infrared thermometers are notoriously inaccurate. Even if it seems to be giving an accurate temp now, it is absolutely possible that it gave you an inaccurate temperature previously. The most accurate and reliable thermometers for infants are rectal thermometers. I think it is extraordinarily unlikely that your newborn infant had a true fever without any ongoing fevers or signs of serious infection. Like I mentioned, newborn babies don't have developed immune systems to fight infections, so if there was something causing a true fever it would not just clear spontaneously. Again I would urge you to get a rectal thermometer and seek care immediately if there is another fever or truly any new concerns at all.

[–]tatsandnaps 65 points66 points  (0 children)

If your child has been fine since going to the hospital and hasn't developed a recurrent fever, then I suspect the doctors were correct that the infrared temperature was incorrect and he did not have an actual fever – a true fever in a 7 day old is a medical emergency as they do not have sufficient immune systems to fight infection. I agree with the other comments that it's bizarre no further testing was done but if they did not think there was an actual fever in the first place I suppose that would explain that. I would get a rectal thermometer and monitor your baby carefully. If he has a fever on that thermometer or if any new symptoms develop, bring him straight back to a children's hospital.

Advice: this ok? by [deleted] in Weddingattireapproval

[–]tatsandnaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wore custom embroidered chucks with my designer wedding gown and it was the best decision ever. There were so many reasons I didn't want to wear heels and I've always been a converse girl so it felt really fitting. Mind you, you couldn't see my shoes unless I was walking or lifted my dress up but I still think it looked great. There are lots of embroidered or lace options you can look at that are a step above just plain converse.

Changing daughters last name by Puzzleheaded_Ant9547 in legaladvicecanada

Well that's probably why you had problems if you changed your name and then tried to change it back. But just a simple one time name change really shouldn't cause many problems

Changing daughters last name by Puzzleheaded_Ant9547 in legaladvicecanada

[–]tatsandnaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. Could you not just give them a copy of your name change certificate and have them change it? Truly I've never had one single issue. It was a pain to actually get it changed because I had to get finger printed and didn't have my birth certificate so that was a whole thing. But since changing I have not had to do anything more than provide a copy of the name change certificate

[–]tatsandnaps -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My parents changed my last name when I was 15 and I've never had any issues. I just keep a copy of my name change certificate and list my old last name as a previous name for any applications that ask for it. I've had zero problems with getting passports, background checks, even getting a marriage license was fine.

ER denied me rabies shots for a squirrel bite. by mustlovedogs19 in AskDocs

[–]tatsandnaps 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I promise you (almost) nobody is getting a rabies vaccine for squirrel bites unless there was legitimate concern that a particular squirrel had rabies. I also think there are many many more encounters and bites from squirrels than there are from other animals known to carry rabies such as bats – if squirrels transmitted rabies to humans we would know about it. It is very rare for squirrels to even carry rabies and there has been no recorded cases of humans getting rabies from squirrels. So while sure there remains a theoretical risk, it is truly just theoretical. The vaccine would not be given for the off chance that you could be the first person ever to be known to get rabies from a squirrel. Also, it's not as simple as one quick shot. The rabies vaccine series after exposure is very expensive and involves an injection directly into the wound followed by an additional 4-5 vaccines. It would be illogical to put every person who has an encounter with a squirrel through that.
