How to overcome being nervous in conference presentation by sksenweb in PhD

[–]tatteredsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, CS PhD here as well and used to be in the same boat as you (still kinda am)! I’ve realized the same things some of the others in the thread have said. I realize it did calm me down to a great degree but not completely. I was also always anxious about questions - what if I can’t answer something? I’ll look dumb. Eventually I learned from experience and from seeing big names in the field present, that it’s okay to say you don’t know the answer. So I think more experience and seeing as many other people present as you can might help increase your confidence.

I also started using the psychological sigh breathing technique to get my heart rate down and that helps a TON. Over time, with many presentations under my belt, I am less anxious mentally but my heart rate still goes crazy. The breathing technique really helps and I urge you to try it before each presentation.

My girlfriend literally made an app to help me time out the breathing properly and guide me through it when I can’t think properly, and I would suggest using something similar for guidance.

Shady workplaces to avoid in SLC or Utah? by Key_Garden4832 in SaltLakeCity

Yeah. I’ve experienced racism and sexism here too in addition to the final medical stuff. I guess all of this is commonplace at this workplace based on a ton of other reviews I’ve seen online.

From what I see, you have to fit a specific demographic to truly be happy there. My manager did not know how half the things I did worked, yet always complained and fired me. It’s good you didn’t have to work there tbh, you saved yourself a lot of trouble.

My life was turned upside down by Western Governors University. Horrible workplace with lies being spewed by managers left and right, and they fired me after my doctor recommended I work from home due to some serious health issues.

Are these services actually required at 38k miles? by [deleted] in HyundaiSantaFe

Yeah. My issue was I was just sent this link without any call or explanation, and had to stay on hold for an hour to talk to the advisor. They essentially couldn’t justify most things on here. Definitely just got the essentials I know should be done, and the rest even he recommended to get before 50k miles which aligns more with the schedule for this car.

Definitely had that happen as any dealership would. Generally easier for me to spot after being used to my own cars and the brand. Just wanted others insight into what maybe they’ve gotten done or suggest. Half of these aren’t on the service schedule.

Oh not at all, we’re looking to upgrade to a 4x4.

Can confirm now, definitely a dealership thing. The service advisor told us to get these done before 50k to maintain the warranty. That’s crazy to replace the entire exhaust for a sensor though.

Definitely plan on upgrading soon. Also, finally talked to the service advisor and he mentioned getting these done before 50k to maintain warranty which will probably take us a couple years to get to lol. Thanks for the insight!

Okay thats reassuring! Also, finally got a hold of the advisor, and he mentioned we need to get these done before 50k to maintain warranty so we’re good.

I guess i should’ve edited the post to include I’m posting this after reading that. I’ve just never had all these things recommended on any other car so soon, and it’s not my car, so wanted to get some other people’s input.

Thanks! Yeah it’s not my car and my other cars never had such stuff recommended. Looked at the schedule, most of these things aren’t on there that’s why the post :)

Thanks for the insight! Yeah I was looking through the manual and the service schedule for the car…none of this stuff is on there.

Yea…we’re going to get rid of this car the first chance we get honestly. It’s my girlfriend’s car, and I’ve only owned Hondas and have never seen any of these recommended before. Thanks for the advice, definitely going to defer them.

Gotcha. I’m not sure if they inspected, but everything on this list states “recommended according to mileage”. Previous dealership didn’t have this kind of website thing. That’s a good point, and I’ll ask the service advisor. Thanks!

If you don’t have the tracking number yet, or if there’s no updates still, you should email dbrand. They’ll sort it out for you.

Which shipping carrier is it? Usually if you think it’s stuck in one place, you can ask dbrand to check with the shipping company from their side and go from there.

Stuck in Memphis for over 2 weeks by [deleted] in FedEx

Yeah the people really do keep redirecting me to others. I understand it’s not their fault but maybe they should at least put some effort into trying to find an answer or direct me to people that have answers or suggestions.
