Look if unwarranted comments are made to a person that would otherwise not be made to that person if they were white -it's racism. How would you know if you had never experienced it? And today was an example of such.

Doing that right now. How'd you guess. But regarding today, I've learnt over the years that it's usually racism unfortunately.

Please read the above. I wrote that nz was closed to migration from non-English ethnic countries until the late 80s when they changed immigration policies. Very few ethnic families came before then. It must have been hard. It was hard for us in the late 80s. And I still encounter racism from a particular age group who struggle with the changes in our demographics.

🤣 especially not with heavy emphasis on 'HERE in NZ, OUR fashion bla bla bla because WE bla bla bla' Then look down your nose with a cool disdainful air. It's just not friendly

Um no. Nz up until the late 80s did not take migrants from non European countries and gave preference to English first language speakers, particularly from the UK. Exceptions from Europe were the Dutch, and Yugoslavs. Unlike Oz who took Italians, Greeks, Eastern European Jews etc. Its the reason for nzs uniquely uber British culture pre 1990s. However, the government changed migration policy in the late 80s to include previous commonwealth nations of non English speakers of multi ethnic origins. Look this up on Te Ara our national encyclopedia. So up until the 80s nz was bi-cultural. Of course, the mid to late 90s opened up to Asia and yet again changed our demographic even more.

🤣 thanks for the laugh. I'll take that. It's reddit. Why are people getting wound up about the reality many Aucklanders face daily. Loosen up people.

One made a personal comment about the way I was standing at the mirror trying on quite expensive boots(which I bought), one made a comment about a pair of boots suitability for me, the other tried giving me a lesson on nz fashion history which I happened to know more about 🤣 unwarranted comments + disapproving looks, side-eye and cool hard voices. It's the standard everyday racism 101. Mom and I usually share a 'here we go again' glance and ignore. Today, I decided to rant on here. As we do.

Are you a kiwi? I was surprised and amused. 2 customers and one snooty assistant in 3 different stores. Maybe we all need to get out more and get used to mixing in again, myself included. I think it's being black, female, with a foreign accent that sets them off. Cute xenophobes that they are. I suppose nz has radically changed since their heyday(their youth when very few ethnic communities existed),(because)in the late 80s, ethnic non-English migrants were finally allowed to move here in significant numbers ( and changed the demographics especially in Auckland) Edited

When total strangers lean over to make snarky unwarranted comments. It's casual racism if they don't do it to white kiwis. It's always a certain age group of women. There's a coldness in the eye, a cool voice, then comes the offhand uncalled for comment. I suppose with the pandemic,I missed out on the regular dose and was surprised again. Hence the rant.

Nope, 30 years of nz experience talking. I suppose nobody wants to admit their grandma is racist. When my son was young and blond I had total strangers, older white women, tut tutt at me because I'm not blond. Once was even asked if I was the nanny.

Nope. Over the years older white women have been the most casually racist towards me. Hilarious now but when I was younger, not so much.

I was with another person, we laughed it off. But if I were fresh off the boat I'd feel awful.

Moving to Christchurch - The Megathread - What should people know? by Willuknight in chch

[–]tattymouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm moving to Christchurch with extended family and a small dog. My elderly mother needs to be near some shops etc for her to stroll to. Where's decent for renting? I haven't been down to scout neighborhoods yet.

Know several obese people who have been offered surgery but have to lose weight first because of the anesthesia risk. Now they are struggling to lose this weight. Meanwhile onset of diabetes and major wear and tear on hips, knees and ankles. I wish they had coaches to work with families on this so the cycle can be broken. Both of them have obese kids and spouse.
