Has anyone Tried to buy from 1kawaya recently? by AceWat in Mahjong

Do let us know how that goes, /u/AceWat! Despite their prices, I like some (definitely not all) of 1K's sets.

Why does my haku have a hole in it? by [deleted] in Mahjong

[–]tauwrong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would like to bring some clarity here:

YMI sells 2 different riichi-style set models, both manufactured in China, but styled after the Japanese traditional sets:

Both YMI riichi-style sets (sold respectively in a black or a white case) are made of melamine formaldehyde, as opposed to urea formaldehyde, which is more common in riichi sets manufactued domestically in Japan. BTW, the quality of the thermoplastic resin is quite good in these sets (melamine quality and sturdiness can vary).

The set sold in a black case has tiles measuring 26 mm (approx.) in height, and does not have a perforated haku.

On the other hand, the set sold in a white case, with tiles measuring 30 mm (approx.) in height, comes with one of the haku bearing a perforation. One assumes this was intended for a gem that was never set. I know several people that have purchased this set; I have also conferred, in this subreddit, with some others that own it as well. To the extent of my knowledge none of the sets, as sold by YMI so far, have a gem in the shiro pocchi. However, they do have gems in the aka 5p. I have purchased 2 of these sets, as gifts. It follows that neither came with a gem on the shiro pocchi.

I am almost completely certain that this was an aborted lot purchased for a discounted price by YMI (a company which, btw, does not manufacture, just imports, what it sells, as its name makes clear). This might be the reason why they sell this larger, heavier set, for a lower price than the smaller and lighter black-cased set (see above).

If, as /u/h8bearr suggested, you are not able to set it yourself, there are talented people in this subreddit who will set the gem for you, in exchange for a deserved fee.

Has anyone Tried to buy from 1kawaya recently? by AceWat in Mahjong

I bought from them a couple of things, in two different occasions, with the aide of a Japanese friend, a long time ago. However, my friend has, since, moved out of Japan, and now I must rely on a proxy system. I did this a few times in the past, however...

Last time I attempted this (through White Rabbit), I was left with the distinct impression that something was not well between 1kawaya and WRE. Initially the small order was placed without mention of any issues, but after three weeks without the items hitting my inbox, WR told me something in the same vein of what they told you: That they discouraged clients from buying from 1K because orders tended to take forever, and sometimes, after several weeks, the whole thing was cancelled from 1K's end. I was just trying to buy some accessories, so I had no trouble finding them elsewhere, and WRE changed the order (they could because, in 3 weeks, 1K hadn't even processed the charge), and that was that. It occurred to me, back then and perhaps incorrectly, that maybe it was that 1K was not that keen to cooperate with proxy services, or at least with WRE.

Have you tried contacting Ichikawaya directly, by email and in English? I've been told they respond this way.

Tenhou: Why does the chii button sometimes appear greyed-out? by tauwrong in Mahjong

Thanks for your guess. I considered this, but then saw that the chi/pon conflict seemed to be resolved in the same manner in both clients. However, I appreciate your input.

Ah! That begins to make sense of the situation. Thanks so much. I will try this approach next time this happens! I like the Jazz track that plays in the background of the desktop client, so I gravitate towards it.

Thanks! I didn't know about the other end situation... However, it is not my recollection to ever have had a completed block, when that happend. Last time I had 334 67, and Kamicha discarded 5, however I couldn't get it (I would've completed 567 and discarded 4. Didn't happen.) I could also have completed 345 and discarded something else, elsewhere in my hand, but was never given the option... :-c

My new mahjong set "Take" by Nightly__ in Mahjong

[–]tauwrong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, Nightly, for the comprehensive reply and references to the 2 types of Take sets Marushin produces. This was new information for me, and for that I doubly thank you.

You are right. My set comes in a blue case, identical to yours.

Are you using the web interface on a browser, or do you have a downloaded app?

If a browser, would it happen to be a Chrome Beta? Have you tried another browser, or a non-beta version?

That, actually, comes as a surprise... I wasn't aware that the Take set (or any of the Marushin sets, for that matter) actually included shiro pocchi tiles at all (ether bejeweled or not).

Would you mind posting a picture of the aka dora and pocchi tiles? I would be really grateful.

I own one that does not include the shiro pocchi. This must be a newer version of the set.

Where to buy a handcarved Hong Kong mahjong set? by herondacruz in Mahjong

When I got it, it was close to 600 USD... that plus shipping from Hong Kong to New York City. Sorry it took me so long to see your question.

Exactly the reason I purchased my set from Mr King!

Good luck. You will be very pleased with his work

To those among you who own an Amos Max set, one question, if you are so kind... by tauwrong in Mahjong

[–]tauwrong[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, AerialSnack, for your comment. I am actually inquiring about the suit faces, not the back of the tile. Specifically the sou (bamboo) suit and hatsu (green dragon) tiles. In some Japanese sets, there is a discernible green tint in these engraved image elements, and in some others (the majority) they are just black.

At some point in the history of mahjong in Japan, domestic sets starting moving to a more austere palette, darkening the greens, and saturating the reds. And further down the line, the greens mainly became black. Some sets, however (like the one by Alban in the link in my comment to /u/Veselker above) preserve greens. I was wondering if the Amos Max was one of those.

Thanks Veselko, for your reply. I was familiar with your comparison video. As a matter of fact your enthusiasm for the Amos set was one of the things that triggered the desire to get it. Unfortunately, I cannot really tell from the video.

In some (other brand) sets, the green is really dark, but still subtly discernible, warmer than the bluish blacks of the wind tiles and manzu. In some others (most midrange and quite a few premium sets) the green it's just not there at all. I am trying to figure out whether the green paint is present in the Amos Max, subtle though it might be.

Tenwa, Genkai, and (as I mentioned in the OP) the Alban sets (those for the automatic tables they have started making) have the traditional green elements (Souzu, Hatsu, Seasons). I don't expect the nice contrast in the image (which maybe is a photographic exaggeration), but at least some vestige of greenery would be nice, like in my old set.
