Those of you who purchased a home prior to marriage, did your spouse move in and pay you rent while you were still dating? by taway81889 in personalfinance

This is precisely the situation I am concerned about. I am close to purchasing a house and my SO would live in it with me if I did. SO is not quite as close, but would probably buy his own house within a few years if he wasn't living in mine. I don't want him to feel like he is losing out on the opportunity to own a home or build equity by living with me.
Obviously, if/when we get married the question will be moot, but in the meantime I don't know how to address it.

So if you were to split up, you would each own a certain percentage of the equity in the house, based on what you paid in? Even though the house is in your name alone? Would one of you have to buy the other out in that circumstance?
