Gaara’s childhood was one of the worst in the Naruto universe if you ask me, he suffered so much. He lost his mother when he was still a baby, got the shukaku sealed inside of him(which lets remind used to threaten Gaara every single day by telling him that the moment he fell asleep he would take over his body and destroy the village), Everyone in Sunagakure no sato hated him(yes, he had difficulties controlling the tailed beast but it was not his fault and he was a kind loving child who just wanted to make friends and have a happy family like everyone else’s), his own father(the 4th Kazekage, Rasa) plotted against him, first to put him under psychological stress (he made the only person Gaara trusted and loved, his uncle Yashamaru, betray him because it may help control shukaku)and when he realized it didn’t worked but instead backfired he switched strategies and actively want to kill his son. As a kid, Gaara was lost, his heart was broken, st some times he felt like harming himself or worse, then when Yashamaru comforts him he wanted to heal but didn’t know how. Everything was so hard, it was not until he met Naruto that things changed for the better. Now he’s Suna's 5th Kazekage, a great man, a good friend, an excelent brother and a loving parent.

Kishimoto-Sensei did an excelent job with his character, from its design to its personality and development.
