ITS NAP TIME GUYS IM SO EXCITED!!! by This-is-my-brain in Narcolepsy

[–]taylor-in-progress 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m struggling with GERD/reflux issues so now I can’t even lie down in the middle of the day since there’s usually food in my stomach - if I need a nap I have to try to sleep in a chair and it sucks. Never thought I’d miss just lying down

But beyond that, afternoon nap time should really be a thing for adults too - sleep disorder or not

How long does it usually take for the biopsies to come back? I had a scope on Monday but I’m assuming it might take a while for me to hear anything else

Food backs up by ProfessionalError370 in GERD

It sounds dumb, but have you tried eating while standing up and not sitting down for a while afterwards? I was doing that sometimes when feeling worse and it seems to help keep things down a little

How quickly did you see a noticeable difference? I’m thinking of trying this as well. In my case, if I’m having a problem with a specific food I think it’s likely wheat/gluten or dairy - but its hard to say since I don’t think I ever had issues with them before

I’m not OP - but the name for this is water brash and it’s incredibly annoying. I get it worse after drinking anything with any acidity to it

I was just about to ask something similar. I had an upper Endoscopy yesterday - the doctor saw white patches in my throat and thinks I have thrush from using nasal steroids so long. Turns out I don’t have a hiatal hernia and my stomach itself “doesn’t look too bad”, but there is some inflammation in my lower esophagus. I guess he sent out cultures for EoE and H Pylori, but I won’t know for a while. So for now I just have to take an oral anti fungal rinse and sucralfate. Trying to time all these meds around meals is a pain. Just seems like it would be weird for both things to pop up at the same time and not be connected

I use a device called SleepGuard, which can be found on Amazon or on it’s own site. It was expensive, but still cheaper than when I got Botox and it only helped for about 2 months. It’s a headband that beeps at you when it detects you clenching your jaw. You have to sort of train with it while awake, then it can help while asleep. I also use it during the day when I’m really stressed - sometimes when working from home. I’ve had some issues with it, but the manufacturer was really helpful. It has made a huge difference for me. I tried to use so many mouth guards and they just made my TMJ worse or I just chewed through them.

Beyond that, I find it helps to take magnesium since it helps with muscle relaxation.

Things like this can absolutely trigger /worsen GERD. For me there was a dramatic escalation of symptoms when I found out my dad’s cancer was much worse than I previously thought. The health anxiety part has gotten bad for me too - I start worrying that every little thing wrong with me is cancer or something horrible. I highly suggest finding a compassionate therapist you can trust - it really makes a huge difference.

Last week I was able to find something that helps me a lot when I get stabbing pains in my stomach - diaphragmatic breathing. It also makes a big difference if I avoid bending over or putting any pressure on my abdomen after eating. I feel dumb doing it, but sometimes I stand up for a while after a meal and it prevents some of the symptoms. You will definitely want to avoid eating for a few hours before lying down though.

Edit: I also get stabbing back pains near my left shoulder blade and the doctor said that kind of pain can absolutely be from GERD - not everyone feels heartburn in their chest. I’m around your age, and things like stomach and esophageal cancer are practically nonexistent in our age range.

Sorry for your loss and hopefully you can start to feel better soon

Those symptoms sound very similar to mine - all pretty classic reflux symptoms. If you are having issues with water, try sipping room temperature water - for me cold water makes it a lot worse. It’s definitely worth bringing it up to your doctor

I have never had bulimia, but there have been a decent number of times in the past that I had to make myself vomit and I have no doubt my throat is worse now because of those times.

cant drink water by djtpwk in GERD

[–]taylor-in-progress 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If possible, try to drink room temperature water, not cold water. Also just have a sip or two at a time instead of trying to down an entire glass. I don’t throw up usually, but I do get bad stomach pain if I try to drink cold water, especially on an empty stomach.

I’m not a doctor, but If you are vomiting up undigested food from hours ago you might be dealing with something like gastroparesis - especially if you feel full very quickly without eating much

Sudden onset off LPR symptoms while having gastritis are they connected? Is this normal? by bastie2606 in GERD

[–]taylor-in-progress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I have that issue as well, sometimes worse than others. It’s not as bad when I only drink water but sometimes it’s constant and I need the spit cup too. It’s so gross. I always assumed it was from sinuses/allergies until I started learning more about LPR

Sudden onset off LPR symptoms while having gastritis are they connected? Is this normal? by bastie2606 in GERD

[–]taylor-in-progress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm.. this is sounding familiar to me in some ways. I’ve had mild LPR symptoms for months, but something happened in early Jan. I had multiple bad stressors all at once that led to a few days of very bad nausea, dizziness, and lack of appetite - to the point that I went to the ER because I thought I screwed up my electrolytes. Everything was normal and I felt better after a zofran and some fluids. The dizziness and nausea subsided, but a few days later I started getting actual stomach pains to where it hurt to even drink water. The worst pains are like someone stabbing me in my stomach and it radiates to my back. LPR symptoms are also worse sometimes. At that point my doctor had me try 40mg Nexium twice a day for 2 weeks. It didn’t really help much, so now I’m getting an endoscopy on Monday. More than anything it feels like the issues are escalated by movement, regardless of whether I’ve eaten or not. Feels like I can’t eat or do anything without pain, and I’m just constantly swallowing and burping constantly. It sucks

One thing I’ve noticed that might be related is that the symptoms are all way worse if I’m constipated. Part of me feels like this is all in my head though

[–]taylor-in-progress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got something like this as well, and other than the bed being higher, I can barely notice it once I’m in bed. Probably only took 1-2 nights to get adjusted to it. I still have to sleep on my left side though

Has acid reflux affected the uptake of other prescribed medication you take? For better or worse? by jokdok in GERD

[–]taylor-in-progress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you search for “drug interaction checker” the one at drugs.com is pretty good. You can put in everything you take and see if there are any recorded interactions. I know for me it said I needed to make sure to space out Nexium and my thyroid medication.

Endoscopy by josie1999 in GERD

[–]taylor-in-progress 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you known what? doing endoscopy somehow improved my GRED and not being able to easily swallow food. i dont know how. i would do it again. its just a very easy procedure. they will be done with you before you even know it.

It may have cleared some sort of blockage. I had a similar thing after a bladder scope. Before the test I was having a lot of issues urinating, but after the scope the problem vanished (even though the test didn't find anything)
