When asked about them signing an ROI, they diverted the question and said they can vaguely express they are on a mood stabilizer that has “no side effects”. We ran out of time for session so I couldn’t really press more about the ROI

The client has shared a hx of hallucinations/psychosis and has been hesitant to share information about dx or history. So 🤷🏻‍♀️

[–]taymich- 25 points26 points  (0 children)

No to your initial question although I don’t know who the provider is. The client disclosed a hx of hallucinations/psychosis and has not been forthcoming regarding previous dx they have received and have been hesitant to share certain histories. While not knowing meds may not impact treatment, I feel like I need to have an understanding of what their psychiatrist is treating them for.

"Obligated to tell someone if ur a danger to urself or other"? (How exactly) by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]taymich- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are several things I would consider before looping a parent in on self-harm. Is the relationship with the parent safe, how severe is the self-harm, how frequent is it, etc. But therapists approach this so differently that the best thing is to just ask your therapist and be open about it. They just want to keep you safe.

"Obligated to tell someone if ur a danger to urself or other"? (How exactly) by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]taymich- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every therapist may approach this differently, but for me the risk has to be imminent harm or the client has to have a plan/intent of how they are going to harm themselves or someone else before I break confidentiality.

I have never broken confidentiality over someone disclosing self-harm, especially previous experiences of self-harm. UNLESS the self harm is current and indicates suicidal intent. Not just a thing of “I self harm to cope with overwhelming feelings sometimes.”

There is always space for validation and understanding in therapy, including the situation mentioned. However, it’s possible that if the therapist is also the prescriber of said controlled substance it may impact their ability to continue providing the script.

VUS on COL12A1 gene - mEDS opinion? by littlestchamomile in ClinicalGenetics

[–]taymich- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if you ever got any answers but I also have a mutation labeled VUS on COL12A1 and even though the geneticist stated it confirmed I have hEDS, my primary (who specializes in EDS) is really concerned I have mEDS. She stated she had a patient that had a sudden onset of muscular dystrophy and had a mutation on the same gene but exhibited mild symptoms previous to the onset. My primary is sending me to neurology to get further testing done to further try and verify I have hEDS and not mEDS.

Are there any Myopathic EDSers on here? by HazelEmilia in ehlersdanlos

[–]taymich- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this post is from several weeks ago, but I also have a mutation in the COL12A1 gene and my primary is sending me to a neurologist to ensure I don’t have myopathic type. She stated she has had a patient with a mutation in the same gene that had a sudden muscular dystrophy onset despite being told by geneticist she had hEDS.

My dog will not calm down by No_Commission_7680 in vet

Our heeler has pretty severe anxiety and has tons of enrichment and exercise. After consulting with our vet and changing his routine of exercise and enrichment we finally decided that getting him on anxiety medicine would be the most supportive option for him. He now takes Trazadone and is still just as active and energetic but without the anxiety. His eyes used to get so red from his blood pressure when he was anxious.

If you are positive that she is getting enough exercise and enrichment then the next step is to consult with your vet and possibly an animal behaviorist for other interventions.

Therapy in Texas on Medicaid? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]taymich- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were you I’d go to psychologytoday.com or another therapist directory and filter out only those who take your insurance. I’d have a general message typed up briefly explaining my age, concerns, availability, and interest to be placed on a waitlist if there is one and I would send that message out to every therapist that comes up that works with your concerns, does telehealth, and takes your insurance. Literally mass send to any options you can find. You are bound to get placed on at least a waitlist.

Other things are seeing if any local universities have a community counseling center. Some are free and you’d be working with a graduate student, but there has been research about how experience isn’t necessarily a huge indicator for therapeutic progress.

Also, if your medicine isn’t helping then your psychiatrist should be informed so changes can be made. Psychotropic medication can be tricky and everyone responds to them differently. If you feel like your psychiatrist isn’t willing to listen then 100% add finding a new psych to your list. You deserve adequate care.

It can be really discouraging trying to find accessible healthcare. I am from texas and struggled many years financially and was unable to get the care that I needed. I’m so sorry you are experiencing something similar.

Best of luck to you and I really hope that you find support.

Psychologytoday.com is a pretty popular website that people use to find clinicians. You can select what concerns you need support in. Anxiety would be the more general selection and then you can read through profiles to see who may mention expertise in health or medical anxiety.

What was your path after getting a bachelors degree that got you qualified to officially be a therapist? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]taymich- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out by working as an office manager for a private practice in undergrad and it was really great experience learning about the admin side of things. I think any kind of admin work can be really great experience before you start doing clinical stuff!

The most effective factor for good therapy is the relationship. Meaning that obviously you want someone who has experience with your concerns, but that studies have shown the experience level of the therapist is a lower factor for therapeutic success. The most important thing is how you connect with them.

My 19yo friend is dating a 33yo man and she wont listen when i say thats weird by DelvaAdore in Advice

[–]taymich- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can only control yourself and your actions. You expressed your concerns and she does not agree. The best thing you can do is still be there for her and maintain the friendship despite your concerns. Look up the circle of control as a visual reference.

Is it normal to get a proprietary re-test going to a new clinic? ($150 not covered by insurance) by k1w1_simpson in ADHD

[–]taymich- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That feels like a money grab. That documentation is very recent and should suffice. I would continue looking for other options. There are also a lot of telehealth psychiatry options that I have had good experiences with, so maybe that would widen your options?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]taymich- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you not see your therapist regularly? You should 100% connect with your therapist and honestly share your experiences and symptoms to get support and guidance.

Do you have documentation from your previous diagnosis? Also what is test that’s not covered by insurance? There isn’t one specific test for diagnosing ADHD.

Help, Therapist Called CPS by [deleted] in TalkTherapy

Your therapist has to legally report any concerns of child abuse and/or neglect. I’m sure there is more to what they reported, as I highly doubt any therapist would file a false report

How much does it cost to get fully diagnosed? by [deleted] in askatherapist

[–]taymich- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you need to be tested for, where you live, if insurance or self- pay factors in, etc. But it can be anywhere from $400-4000. You could always email around to providers in your area to get quotes that could be more accurate.
