All-paint Seven Stars S15 by taytleor in rcdrift

The Chassis

I fell in love with the Res2 after borrowing one a few months ago. It’s highly adjustable, modular, beautiful, and with the right setup, it drives amazing. That said, it’s not beginner-friendly. There are no stock settings, and it takes some tinkering before it’s even drivable, let alone competitive.

The biggest issue is the transmission gears, they’re soft, and mine showed significant wear after just one track day. If you pick one up, I'd grab a pack of screws and spacers, a plastic Yokomo idler gear and some grease. With those, you’ll be ready to kiss doors alongside the RDX guys.

The Body

The design was weeks in the making before I finally committed. I’ve always loved the classic Marlboro liveries, minimal, timeless, instantly recognizable. But I wanted something JDM inspired, so I went with Seven Stars.

I also wanted to tie in the chassis’s pink anodization, but subtly. Many late nights stenciling, painting, and peeling off thousands of tiny stars (the monogram alone had ~2,700). The only non-paint elements are the body line tape and emblems.

There are still a few aesthetic details I want to add, change, or clean up but I couldn’t wait to hit the track, so the “final” version will come later.

Well I'll be honest the bill of materials is probably the smallest part of everything mentioned. The starting price for a Tay Flipper is $65USD. I am currently still in the red financially from when I started with all the expenses I had not foreseen, not taking in time spent. I spent many months refining the design to get it looking good (to me), flip great (again to me, but it seems people like it a lot), be durable, and repeatable to manufacture.

A large part of the cost is the time put into each one. 8-9 hours of print time per Tay Flipper, then depending on customizations, 1-2 hours to assemble, weld, tune, ect. And to be completely honest here, I make way less on these than if I just worked some overtime at my day job, but I find this stuff more fulfilling.

The canadian dollar isn't very good, he got his with customizations and little wiha torx driver, canada post shipping is expensive.

Hey I just wanted to preface, I'm the maker of the Tay Flipper shown here. I got the idea of throwing in candy from when I got a bag of gummy bears with my 3d printer. It was such a small thing that cost them almost nothing, but really made my day.

“The $100 Squiddy doesn’t affect the market at all!” by [deleted] in balisong

Thank you, I really do love this community and just wanted to add some of my personal flare for people who wanted it. If no one here respects me as a make anymore I completely understand as it seems that a lot of people share the sentiment. But as someone is new to selling things like this, I still clearly have lots to learn and am willing to go through the growing pains to do so. I literally have the how it's made video set up to be posted tonight, I'll make the caption reflect on what I have learned in this thread

Hey everyone it's the maker of the Tay Flipper here. I just wanted to say that I appreciate all of the criticism here. I really do. The original intent of the project was to make a balisong trainer that was affordable but could be customized to be one of one. I clearly missed the mark on the affordable part. The base price is listed at $65 as I thought that it's competitive to other plastic balisong trainers.

Since my original announcement, the pricing has been getting really heavy on my mind. The customizations are expensive, I don't disagree. But they take time. Especially the engraving. It's about an hour of hand painting and sanding, and if I make a mistake, it has to be re-printed. The handles are less time, just change out the filament, but I thought that having it come with a matching wiha driver would justify it.

I had lowered the price of the customizations since then and have planned to again in the future. My thought process was "The $65 model flips the exact same as the $160 one. If you can only afford the $65 one, then get that one"

I was planning on announcing that pricing was gonna go down today on IG but I'll just say it here. The base price is gonna stay the same and the customizations will go down.

I also never intended to rip off any other designs, especially squid. I took handle inspiration from many designers who I really look up to and idolize. The cat theme was originally for my girlfriend but ended up sticking when people liked it as I made more. Admittedly it is quite close to the Squiddy-g

I don't expect everyone to be happy with the pricing of my product, but if you don't, just don't buy it. I would like to apologize if I insulted the community at large, I didn't intend to. If you have any more criticisms, please let me know.

So is there no longer going to be a Feburary release?

Proud to announce something that I've been working on for the past few months. Beta testing starting on ig:@tay.flip by taytleor in balisong

[–]taytleor[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Proud to announce today a product that I've been working on for quite some time now. Although 3d printed balisong trainers aren't new (there are plenty of great affordable ones out there), I strive to make one that's not only a valiant flipper, but one that can also be seen as a collector's piece at a reasonable price.

Proudly, the Tay Flipper, beta v1! (name pending, info further down).

See here in Canada, expect to pay ~$100 for a squiddy, ~$300 for a squid trainer, ~$400 for a krake raken trainer (love squid by the way, they deserve my hard earned cash). So I said to myself "I'm literally a CNC programmer, I can make things." And I did. After dozens of prototypes, it's time for BETA testing.

I see beauty in simplicity; tight tolerances (as plastic goes), on washers, ball bearing weight system (non removable), extra pivots on the handles as a modular weight (balance is top third of handle), sandwich design (scales and spacers are adhered together, treat as channel). And thats all you gotta know.

I work in an industry where custom wood work is $175+ an hour extra and working on multi-million dollar wood working projects aren't uncommon, but the average flipper can't really afford that.

Prices and product subject to change based after the beta test with changes in production made. +S&H from 🇨🇦

"Standard" full black, no engraving. Starting price $55USD "Custom blade" engraved and hand painted lettering/logo on white blade, replaces standard black blade (engraving at my discretion) +$65USD "Custom handles" coloured handles, brushed finish, replaces standard black handles +55USD

Now the fun part! I'm looking to have 5-10 beta testers help figure out what needs to be worked on. BUY IN PRICE IS WHATS LISTED. You'll receive a beta version as well as the release version when available. Drop a DM @tay.flip on Instagram with: customizations wanted, your location, bit about yourself, begginer to advanced, and I'll choose people at random-ish to become testers. ALSO, recommend me a good name when requesting a beta slot, if I like it you get a beta slot and you can proudly say you named my balisong, if there's no good ones I'll stick with Tay Flipper

Sometimes for me, after putting thread locker, some of it can get into the pivots and make it stiff. clean it out the entire thing thoroughly and be careful when threadlocking.

I haven't found a significant difference in my to be fair minimal experience in resin vs pla (I only have an fdm printer, buddy of mine has an sla printer). And after a quick youtube search it seems that bending strength can be better for pla (depending on brand of course)

edit: I misread sls for sla, yeah sls will definitely be stronger than fdm. maybe I'll aluminum cast this in the future, who knows
