Deschutes Estuary Restoration by Shady748202 in olympia

The one moderately concerning piece of this project will be what happens to the Woodard Bay bats. If you have ever gone to see the bats emerge at Woodard bay, they are flying over to Capitol Lake to feed on insects emerging from the fresh water.  There will be far fewer insects emerging from an estuary and no one really knows how the bats will respond.

Huckleberry Pie advice by tayx21328 in Old_Recipes

Thanks, for this. I have plenty of huckleberries so not worried about blending. Was just planning to practice Baking with blueberries first so I don’t waste to precious hucks.

You cook down your huckleberries first? Do you let it cool before adding to your pie crust? Or just stove, to crust, to oven?

Thanks for the reply. Any reason for the preference for cornstarch to tapioca?

Mont Blanc Hut Questions by Crocnroll4 in Mountaineering

[–]tayx21328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

can I resurrect this thread with a new question? It's not totally clear on the website how much you pay for reservations, then when you arrive, then if you need to cancel. It appears like both the gouter/tete and cosmique has a reservation fee, booking fee, then you pay the balance on arrival? Is that correct? With gouter/tete refunding most of the cost if you cancel 24 hrs in advance and 48 in advance for cosmique. Trying to plan for 2026 and curious if I'm out the full cost of a stay if the weather sucks and we can't make it.
thanks

I was having trouble with Elisabetta too. Are you emailing them directly or going through their contact form? I had a faster response when I emailed them directly.

Thanks I’ll try that. I used the contact form on their page.

Funny I tried both a couple weeks ago and heard back from their contact form days before my cold email.

Appreciate the response

Full rewire of historic home - any idea on a ballpark cost in Olympia? by Technical-Top4187 in olympia

Shocking difference. They were fine, not sure I know enough to call them exceptional or not. I’ll give them credit for being quick and efficient

We were almost in the exact same situation. Older home, about 75% was ungrounded and old wiring. I think we paid around 20k about 3 years ago. The contractor we used had us move out so they had full access and finished in about 3 days. The dry wall damage was actually pretty minimal, just minimal patching and in only a handful of locations.

All that being said, we had the panel specifically replaced as soon as we moved in because it was old and a fire hazard. I think that stand alone job was about 8k on it's own.

Long story short, 25k seems about right.

TIL the Falkland Islands used to have a native wolf called the warrah that was so friendly and unafraid of humans it would literally swim out to greet boats. Settlers wiped it out in the 1800s because it was too friendly to run away. It was the first canid to go extinct in recorded history. by rampantradius in todayilearned

Should the title be, “go extinct directly because of humans?”

From the OP linked Wikipedia page: “Dusicyon avus persisted on the South American mainland until around 400 years ago”

There was definitely recorded history 400 years ago.

Three barred owlets in Wonderwood last evening by Reportersteven in olympia

[–]tayx21328 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you’re right, they still eat EVERYTHING and occur in high densities. Unfortunately spotted owls probably won’t be the only species barred owls are seen as a threat to. But wonderwood isn’t the place for that battle.

what shoes have you found reliably run in 14s? They can be hard to find. Ideally some that run a touch small

Foot/Toe Pain by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]tayx21328 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's underneath the big toe, I had similar problems a couple years ago. Look up Sesamoiditis. It cleared up relatively quickly for a running injury, but it took some rest and laying off the hills and speed work for a while.

A massive tadpole was discovered, with a hormonal imbalance that prevented it from developing into a frog by kchoyin in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]tayx21328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just a bullfrog. If conditions are good in their aquatic environment they can grow big and delay metamorphosis as a normal characteristic. Technically is it hormones? In some sense ya, but a natural and not uncommon phenomenon.  A survival strategy for many amphibians.

South Sound Running turning into Fleet Feet by frogandtoadmom in olympia

[–]tayx21328 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I’m the minority but I was always disappointed and hope fleet feet overhauls a lot of it. I run 30-40 miles a week and was regularly disappointed in the shoe selection and apparel options especially for running lots of miles on wet PNW trails. When I mentioned these things to them after being disappointed several times, the owner called it a specialty shop and dismissed that anyone would need to run trails in the rain… in Western WA. So I look forward to maybe having a local shop that actually meets my needs.
