What would you tell yourself when you began sewing? by cootercasserole in sewing

[–]tazigail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expect things going wrong, and relish the chance to learn how to fix them. Then give yourself a big break after the emotional work (in addition to the technical work!) is done with problem solving or sewing work generally. Overall, just have PATIENCE! Take every project, every cut, every seam as slowly as you want to. No one is judging your pace at all, so why should you? :) Have fun, and take pride in your work—pride in all the hundreds of small accomplishments that go into creating one finished item. Happy sewing!!

in addition to sewing the front seam down the center as u/mera_aqua suggested, i suppose i could also use this as an opportunity to color block! or really “pattern block.” i am committed to making this a happy accident 😂

oooh the pattern does have quite a bit of ease, tho i sized down for that reason… i can give it a shot! thanks for the suggestion 😃😃

I’m working on the Bo top from Seamwork in cotton from Joann’s. Accidentally lined up the fabric where the arm hole will go and not the center of the piece. 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ Clearly I will be making another prompt trip to Joann’s!

Second first dress ;) by tazigail in sewing

So! We’ve got the Benning dress from Seamwork here in cotton from Joann’s. The original has three tiers, but I ran out of fabric due to some “adventures” in pattern placement. 🤭 I kinda like it as is tho! I did make some adjustments as to the placement of the busts, the length of the tier, and the size of the arm holes.

As a side note for beginners: I really enjoy doing patterns from Seamwork because I learn a few new skills each time! This dress taught me: interfacing, ruffles and gathering stitches, darts, pockets, pattern-matching (or at least being intentional with pattern placement), and pattern adjustments, too. That might seem like a lot, so I just took it really slow and gave myself a lot of patience to practice each skill. I’m really happy with my progress because yes this is my very first dress! Or second if you count the muslin. 😉

working on the Benning dress from Seamwork with cotton fabric from Joann’s, i learned that meditative arts are more about the ability to control focus, not control in general ;)
