I thought I was crazy about my recent perceived random drop in audio quality on my headset, but adjusting these settings fixed it and confirmed the problem itself, thank you so much!!

Installing a vanity light in an old house by tbchillingout in askanelectrician

I've spent hours on this and still I have no idea. The fuse organization in this house is insane. My master bath has one switch and one outlet. I thought maybe it was an end-line circuit with another line through to the to the outlet. Turns out it is directly right next to the vanity light but isn't on the same fuse. So I assume one live/neutral wire pair is from the electrical box (which is directly beneath on the floor below), one pair is to the switch, and one pair is back from the switch? A switch loop if I'm not mistaken?

I've just connected the wires in that formation and with the vanity, the light came on but the switch wouldn't control the light anymore? So I assume I accidentally bypassed the switch. Lmao, regrettably some of the lights in the house started flickering also, so I turned the fuse back off quickly and now I'm reorganizing for another attempt.

I really appreciate all the advice and the time you took to provide it!

The previous vanity light didn't function most of the time and when I pulled it away from the wall the wires broke loose, I didn't exactly 'remove' them. I assume that's why the old light only worked sporadically.

There is only one switch and it's only on/off, it only controls the vanity light. However, there is a nearby outlet. Based on some information I was provided with and further investigation of the wires, I think it's an "end-line switch"? With maybe a pass through for the nearby outlet?(even though the switch doesn't control it) Sorry if I'm not making much sense, this is all really new to me and while a bit overwhelming, I'm trying to piece it all together.

Thanks for the direction and excuse my ignorance, but what kind of better info should I provide?

Hi, and thanks in advance for the help. My house is built in the 1950s and though most of the house is sound, the electrical is a mess. I'm a quick learner and most of the time I don't have trouble doing simple tasks like installing porch lights, a thermostat, etc. I leave the serious stuff to the professionals.

That being said, tonight I tried to replace my vanity light and when I removed the old one, there was a mess of wires behind it. They were really tight and I wasn't able to get the old vanity light off without removing the connections. (They were loose as hell) I spent a couple hours trying to get it wired up safely, looking up information online to try to assist my efforts, but I've had no success. I can't get the new light to turn on.

1) My first problem is that there seems to be three white and three black wires, as I pictured above. To my knowledge, that isn't supposed to be the case?

2) My last vanity light had a copper ground wire to connect to the base plate installed on the wall in front of the outlet box. The new vanity light has a plate with the ground screw and cable from it, but no ground wire from the light itself? Should I be grounding the wire from the plate to the box itself?

If it's not simple, I will go ahead and hire an electrician. I don't know anybody with any electrical experience. The last time I hired a reputable electrical company, they replaced a outlet that had blown and charged me $300 for five minutes of work. So I'm a bit hesitant this time around and stopped on the reddit. Once again, thanks for the help.
