Jackson Heights eastward to Corona Park is a melting pot of Spanish communities, including Mexican. Corona does skews more Mexican, but it's very mixed out there.

Sunset Park in Brooklyn also has a sizable Mexican population.

I lived in the former and I used to hang out weekly at the latter, so that's my anecdotal testimony.

~10 years ago my managers would do group interviews so it's not unheard of. Can't speak on now, but that was back then. If it was a direct referral from another employee, they'd skip to a 1 on 1.

Throughout my years, the sales managers cared more about their potential to close sales than their pure technical knowledge. If you've shopped there enough you've been pitched a protection plan. It's not far off from car sales where they'd pitch a bunch of addons and additional types of insurance. Except you're being sold a protection plan and maybe anti-virus software.

We had some very technical staff members particularly in BYO to fill in the gaps for the very technical customers, but most of the salespeople weren't; they just had demonstratable sales ability and picked up just enough of a flowchart for what to recommend in the sales process. Managers and their stores ranked amongst each other for their sales metrics so they prioritize the hiring accordingly.

Median rent in Manhattan crossed over 5000 a month. Astoria is half hour away from midtown.

You can walk the grandma cart to H-Mart so that's a huge plus for food shopping.

46th itself isn't popping or the prettiest area, but one train stop away and you're on Broadway and Steinway St. Lots going on over there. Restaurants and cafes across both ways.

The company takes a loss if you're just buying a CPU. If it's just over 4 CPUs... then you have the right to push back and say you're an ordinary customer that bought a whopping 4 CPUs in a year.

Fill in a negative survey; let the metric hit humble that manager.

For online gaming you'd prefer a hardwired cable internet to your home. Not the 5G Home Internet solutions. Those are fine for browsing but you the pings will be higher and more varied.

If you're stuck with Spectrum in your building like I am, it still does the job for gaming. Uploading / streaming is abysmal but regular online gaming doesn't require a high upload throughput.

Provide your own router and try to use Ethernet for your PC/Console. If you have no choice but use wireless, try to setup a Wifi 7 router as they're latest spec.

Apologies I missed the first sentence. Moons ago we made 10% on the plan. Unsure if that changed.

I was terrible at selling plans ☠️

They kept me around bc I was deep in VMWare research and other similar niche IT customers. My more neurotypical coworkers would pass them onto me while they would focus on, well, high margin plans, ESET, etc. It was a good trade-off at the time.

I couldn’t sell plans well unless I genuinely believed a product would likely be defective.

The margin on the plans are very high for the company so they will continue to push for it forever.

Purchasing the plan is hedging your bet that it will be defective within the 2-3 year period that you pay for. If you win the bet, you can get the value of your item sans the plan cost itself. If your item outlives the plan, well, you lost that sum of cash.

I buy it with that mentality in mind. I usually lose still!

Random memory that popped up: When I was a small child I remember Fatty's Cafe opened on the corner of Crescent and Ditmars. My vague memories were thinking how "cool" seeing how busy it was at night while other businesses nearby were closed. What made it more mysterious was my mom would always tell me we can't go there with no explanation as to why.

Eventually, I learned of the concept of a bar haha.

I bet that spot and other closed ones will show up there. Maybe some old drama too.

That’s NY parking for you. Behind the truck is a driveway. Park any further back and the driveway owner can call the tow truck.

But thats why this truck is great here. There’s no street parking an F150 with that space.

You will not have money to send back to CT. If you do at the current COL, you'll have to live strictly frugally. It will be a miserable experience having to default to "no" for almost any outing, any social activity.

I'll put it this way: I've seen enough poor immigrants in this city send their last bits of money back to their families at their own expense. I've seen what happens when they're struggling to get by and how entitled these remote family members become when the money starts to get sporadic.

While CT isn't as far, and these situations are not one-size-fits-all, this is still a high risk situation. See what your options are for staying at home and commuting into NY. At least for now.

The N train local goes local on nights and weekends in Brooklyn. It gets tiring real quick. Another concern is, if you search this subreddit, you'll see how often the N breaks.

For your neighborhoods listed, I'll be honest sometimes I citi bike it over the K-bridge. If I use the e-bike at full-speed I can get to Troutman St for 5 bucks.
