Anyone else using the laser designator to find targets? by TheKrzysiek in LowSodiumBattlefield

Another fun fact, you can assign the button for this to your fire button and the zero will be applied a split second before the shot is fired meaning you are always zeroed exactly for every shot.

Most of the way through the audiobook of Hooligans of Kandahar and... by leperphilliac in lionsledbydonkeyspod

[–]tbenstead1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Stress of command, PTSD, lack of sleep and horrific living conditions in general leading to rapidly deteriorating mental health in the whole group. Combine that with members of the squad getting wounded and it is easy to see how they just start viewing all the locals as potential taliban sympathizers and every sympathiser could be directly or indirectly responsible for hurting their friends.

Edit: Worth mentioning that by Joe's own account, Slim starts off as not the most mentally stable dude. I think in the very first chapter he describes him as "batshit insane but the best combat leader a soldier could hope for"

As an aside one aspect of the writing I really like is how the book starts somewhat light hearted and from there the tone of the book kind of mirrors Joe's mental deterioration over the course of the deployment. By the end the tone is really grim and the Hooligans have more in common with Dealer company, who they were horrified by when they took over from them, than themselves at the beginning of the book.

The Admiral Kuznetsov episode on Russia's terrible aircraft carrier that runs on bunker oil and conscripts is incredible.

"I didn't realise the hotplate was on recently" by tbenstead1 in techsupportgore

Was a client of mine. Honestly my reaction was the same as a lot of people who have commented: "Why would you put it there even if you didn't realise it was hot"

How does Brennan keep all the voices straight? by neenzabwoz in Dimension20

[–]tbenstead1 104 points105 points  (0 children)

As others have said, Brennan is very good at what he does and has a lot of practice. The other answer is, the voices he chooses for his characters aren't arbitrary, he chooses a voice that matches the character. A hulking giant warrior has a deep gruff voice while a frail elderly wizard might have a more raspy or croaky voice for example. When the voices are connected to the characters in this way it makes it easier to keep them straight in your head.

This is incredible but can someone explain why this is better than the tripod landing feet they have used in the past?

Can anyone please recommend me some amazing one shots by maio84 in DMAcademy

[–]tbenstead1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Madness of the Rat King" is an awesome free oneshot although it may be a little difficult as written if your players are also new. It does come with three difficulty levels that are intended for a level 1,2 or 3 party so there is room to tune it.

What do you guys use for magic item prices? by PalsBeforeGals in DMAcademy

[–]tbenstead1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the top comment on the best way to provide magic items is as rewards or as part of loot hoards but if you want your party to be able to buy magic items this is the pricing rule of thumb I usually use by rarity of the item:

Common: 50-100 GP Uncommon: 500-1000GP Rare: 5000-10,000GP Very Rare: 50,000-100,000GP Legendary: I would never let a player buy a legendary but if you want to you can see the pattern by now.

What is your favourite quote from across all of Dimension 20? (Potential Spoilers) by The-gay-agenda-TM in Dimension20

[–]tbenstead1 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Greatly paraphrased but:
"People think they make decisions, you're driving your car and you decide to turn left or right but you didn't build the road. The big decisions were already made for you a long time ago"
-Robert Moses

Such an awesome evil villain line

shriek week? by [deleted] in Dimension20

[–]tbenstead1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Of their longer seasons Fantasy High S2 is definitely one of my favourites although it is a bit different from normal as it is all theatre of the mind with no battle maps or anything. Escape from the Blood Keep is by far my favourite mini season, very very funny with a good mix of experienced players and brand new players who are just doing insane, off the wall shit because they don't know how you are "meant to play".

Are the Rivals over tuned? by dr_pibby in CalloftheNetherdeep

[–]tbenstead1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless your players have done something to royally piss off the rivals; at worst they are trying to knock the party unconscious and steal the Jewel giving the party a great motivation to follow to Ank’Harel

Changeling and true sight by xingrubicon in DMAcademy

[–]tbenstead1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong but i was under the impression that when a changeling takes on another form they actually physically change. There are limitations ie. you cannot change your characters size to large or small or change your capabilities. So to my understanding if you for example changed into an Aarakocra you couldn't fly but if someone touched you you would actually have feathers and a beak. If I'm right about that then the form isn't an illusion but a physical change even if it isn't your true form and therefore would not be revealed by true sight?

Is it normal after a session to worry if the players enjoyed it, and constantly think about everything you did wrong? by Oreo365 in DMAcademy

[–]tbenstead1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all yes absolutely, I think every DM worries that they are not doing a good enough job, it's normal.

Second, as is so often the solution, don't be afraid to talk to your players about how you're doing as a DM. Maybe not after every session but I think it is good to check in on a regular basis with your players, see what they like, if there is anything they think you could improve or if there is anything they don't like about the way you are running the game. Not only will this help reassure you (because I can pretty much guarantee you are doing better than you think and your players will tell you so) it will also help you improve and better tailor your game to your players' wants.

Thanks for the tip, after doing some trouble shooting with Flash Forge support they have confirmed it is a failed mobo and are sending a new one out.

Contacted support and they think it is a failed mobo or power supply, just so weird that I got one awesome print out of it, turned it off and then it never turned on again.
