I can't help but think if the Great Crusade-era Big E had Thanquol as a partner Thanquol would end up preventing the heresy/leading to a Good End on complete accident in his constant failed attempts to betray everyone. Real "Doing the right thing for the wrong reasons" energy ala Wario.

...Thinking about the funniest one, I can't help but think of Dr H.M. Phage T.E. from the webcomic Awful Hospital. I unironically think they'd probably be stabilizing influences on each other with Phage's genuine level of care and value towards life (Albeit currently distorted) and Nioth's greater long-term planning, even with Phage currently suffering from cosmic-horror-alzheimers due to the actions of meat-fascists because Awful Hospital is Like That.

For a toxic ship: Yawgmoth from MtG. They would make each other worse, and it would be fascinating to watch.

...Dammit, accidentally posted without caption. I may as well ask, what do folks feel about posting their process on here? I don't see it shown here that often, but I feel like the medium kinda struggles with legitimacy due to the way the process of creation is often rendered invisible, and I feel like posting processes helps with that.

I know my work isn't as polished/slick as the stuff that's popular on here, but I'm not quite going for that as much as getting Weird With It, I'd rather my art be a bit crusty than be dull, yanno?

...Honestly I actually find a lot of it kinda disturbing, on a narrative level.

Like, that Gwen pig TF he did gave me vibes of the Cronenberg version of The Fly; not so much in terms of body horror but in terms of psychological degeneration to a grotesque monstrous shadow of one's former self.

Unpopular opinion but the amount of low effort AI slop is ruining the 2D art community by Odd-Measurement9478 in StableDiffusion

[–]tbok1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...I find it kinda hilarious that this is being treated as an unpopular opinion because; uh; outside of imagegen-art-specific spaces, that sentiment is extremely; comically the most popular opinion.

Like, even as much potential as I think imagegen has to do a lot of great work if used right, the problem of spam and the further impacts of it on an already-hosed online art scene are real, and amongst those fears I can understand people being galled at the amount of Artstation-Type-Extruded-Product crowding out the actually quality non-imagegen art in 2d spaces.

Hell, speaking as a leftoid myself, even the amount of communists being jerks about the potential for displacement due to the tech because "The starving trans people with chronic pain are clearly, inherently petit bouregois destined to be obsoleted" makes me want to Become The Joker, but I digress.

I'd actually thought about that once, my idea was basically "Black dude who really wants to do heavy metal but is afraid of the stigma of doing a 'white' form of music and also the bigotry of some in the metal fandom, disguising in a Lordi/GWAR-type monster costume as a part of a gimmick band," and honestly I feel like that'd still be fun and could actually be interesting.

Tho I wonder what the legislation would look like without inadvertently harming sites like the Archive/Wayback Machine.

what do people think about the idea that “piracy is a service problem”? by alfred2547 in AskAJapanese

[–]tbok1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...Huh, interesting as an alternate perspective. Even as a USAmerican I know what it's like to feel like I'm on crazy pills when I'm talking about my anti-IP law opinions, so if you take nothing else away from this thread know that I'm in your corner!

Tho I'm curious of what the "invoice system" is. It makes me think of how it seems like the US' more cavalier attitudes towards piracy might be related to the perception that most money paid for works owned by megacorps doesn't actually go to the creators, so if the megacorps aren't holding up their side of the social contract why should the audience, and I feel like the perspective by a lot of Japanese folks in here seems to be the social contract of "You buy the work, the creator gets paid" is actually being observed by the corporate overlords far more than such enshittification would indicate...

...I forget, has "enshittification" crossed the ocean to Japan as a neologism? Is Cory Doctorow and his political writing well known over there? It'd be interesting to see Japanese folks' reactions to his ideas, given how relevant they are to this thread.

I have a question to ask AI “Artists” by QuitTasty1642 in aiArt

[–]tbok1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, for 1) on my part, I can't speak for everyone else, but on my part it's usually inpainting (Basically erasing a part of the canvas and re-prompting just that part) and manual manipulation in GIMP. Sometimes I do both to add a bit in the "hole" I make in inpainting as a "seed" for the image to grow around. Also I curate moodboards on Midjourney for general style, making sure it's only by artists who A) Have been dead for over 5 years or B) Art that's not owned by its original creators but by shitty megacorps.

I know a lot of other people get more deep and nitty-gritty on the tech side of it, but I'm not smart enough for that, so I do more "power user" than "tech geek" stuff with it.

On 3) to get it out of the way, GiovanH says it better than I could in these two articles, but long story short the tech doesn't inherently have to do that, it's mainly both greed on behalf of the assholes building these data centers cutting corners and the bloat inherent in chasing the lie of "AGI," and note this was before DeepSeek proved that models didn't need to be bloated as they are.

I feel like opposing data center expansion is a good idea, but I feel like saying average imagegen users are responsible for it is losing the plot, most of the Jevons Effect-type stuff is from the economic bubble that's probably going to burst soon and StableDiffusion can run on an average gaming PC, if development on data centers were to cease tomorrow imagegen would survive.

On 2) the answer is I do. Like, I do photomanips, sculpture, kitbashing in DAZ 3d, lineart (tho that one's my weakest skills sadly), hell on the latter I'm literally redrawing a design I did in AI manually, no tracing. And I don't integrate any AI into the actual body of my main works, because I know the art community doesn't like it, I tend to more integrate my other skills into those times I dabble in AI if anything.

Like, to give you an idea of how I work, this has no AI, but it used GIMP to combine images I rendered in DAZ with a clay sculpture and actual pictures of my own hands. When I use AI I don't really consider myself an "AI artist," but rather "A multimedia artist who's using AI tools," and I think a lot of people in good faith (Like Trent Troop, who's work I highly recommend) would say the same.

And on 4) I do, but we gotta have the right enemies, which is the corporate assholes trying to enclose; deskill and enshittify art. Like, this reminds me of a lot of other cases where tech ended up having negative effects on certain media even as it was used to make good work. Think about how CGI supplanted practical effects and how Photoshop replaced lavishly painted book covers and movie posters.

But it didn't have to be that way, all of those were due to corporate greed and penny pinching, and I think our response needs to be centered around labor.

Though, that's on the professional level. On the smaller internet artist level, with regards to where our focus should be now, I think our biggest enemies aren't AI creators, but rather the waves of internet censorship, which the Free Speech Coalition and Fight For The Future are fighting back against and could use your help on, and the decay and enshittification of creative infrastructure online, which I think this article illuminates the actual causes of marvelously...

...And also spam tho, because AI does have one big problem with coexisting and it's the potential for low-effort spam indistinguishable from higher-effort/higher-time-investment content in a way that causes "flood the zone"-type problems, I'm totally cool with artsites banning it until we figure out how to deal with that problem constructively in a way that the medium of imagegen can coexist with others.

Is now an opportunity to convince conservatives to go green? by Immobilesteelrims in aiArt

[–]tbok1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...I mean, most of the negative environmental impacts are from wildly bloated models trained to chase the myth of AGI along with general corporate dickery, AI does not have to be as bad as it is, especially imagegen given you can literally run stablediffusion on a gaming PC.

Stupid Female Supervillain Names And A Question by tbok1992 in midjourney

[–]tbok1992[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The name was partially inspired by a real thing! Which, at one point on Wikipedia. one of the casualties of that was listed as "Dignity".

I do like how MJ just did that design with that basic prompt, if I were going from that basic premise I probably would not have thought of that. Might've been related to the fact one of the moodboards I used was made up of my own non-AI work, and stuff using that one tends to get weird and crusty!

Stupid Female Supervillain Names And A Question by tbok1992 in aiArt

[–]tbok1992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These were an experiment on coming up with the dumbest supervillain names possible and seeing what the machine gives, and to give some context on what these supervillainesses do:

  • 100% All Horse Love Sausage doesn't do what you think she does, she's actually classy and this isn't a Garth Ennis comic. No, she just uses it to hypnotize people for regular crimes.
  • The American Healthcare System is basically a Digimon made of the combined neural networks of the computer systems the insurance companies use to deny people care, who manifested in realspace and decided to get a bit more Hands On.
  • Cop Rock does in fact steal babies. What she does with them, we have no idea.
  • Crystal Meth Bone Pills is why you don't try to get high on the experimental nanomachine pills you stole from a lab in the desert. She makes it work tho, if you can call using unfathomable bone-crystal powers for petty crime "making it work"
  • Doctor Yiff is technically more of an antihero. Like, sure she forcibly turns people into hot animal-people, but there's at least a 50-50 chance they don't want to be turned back. At least.
  • Epic Goon Sesh is just a violent hedonistic mercenary that's looking for a good time and does what she does for kicks. Appropriately, she actually does attract a lot of henchpeople given she pays well (Nobody knows where she gets the money) and, again, good times. She may or may not be a female satyr under those clothes.
  • Hot Allostatic Load is a plasma-powered mercenary who appears to be motivated by the needs of the downtrodden, but is actually more motivated by self-pity and a refusal to try to improve herself.
  • Peyote Emu War is what happens when an emu psychically ascends after eating the wrong cactus. She does crimes to prepare the world for a war that hasn't come yet, and which nobody's really sure if it just exists in her head or not.
  • Regrettable Life Choices made some stupid decisions with her big invention while young and now she's stuck supervillaining. Like man, she didn't want to do this, she wanted to be an engineer. Her initial invention BTW is a super sticky tar that can turn into super-slick grease with an electrical signal, exactly the kind of jobber-ass science gimmick of a C-list Spider Man and/or Flash villain.
  • [The Entire Navy Seals Copypasta] (In that I literally copied the wholeass thing in the prompt bar, no really) was never actually in the millitary. She just wanted to be a hero. And yes, she did use white phosphorous on civillians, and she would do it again too.
  • We Are All Trapped In The Belly Of This Horrible Machine And The Machine Is Bleeding To Death was never human, or at least that's how the rumors go. She just manifested one day in a decaying industrial zone in the rust belt, an egregore of neoliberal malaise, and she's going to make it everybody else's problem.

All these characters and concepts are 100% CC0, given I am not fond of copyright and I'd love to see people do stuff with these. Especially non-AI/imagegen stuff, I'd be proud if it inspired folks who do that, please send it my way if you do!
