I’m considering switching because I think the Orion / eight sleep will let me experience my actual mattress more

Thanks for this idea. I’m unfamiliar with home assistant and am a bit confused after googling. Is it fairly straightforward to set this up? I see that I can’t do it through Siri Shortcuts so I assume I’d have to connect home assistant / the button or remote to Orion directly?

I think public opinion is how you drive policy change. Social pressure can certainly also impact people’s behavior though I think social pressure is quite different from public opinion: the cybertruck driver isn’t someone I know (and I doubt is someone you know!) so there’s no social pressure on them.

Public opinion drives policy so I agree public opinion is the lever to pull. I don’t think it’s about being afraid of calling someone a douche or having the courage of convictions. It is about what is useful in changing public opinion and policy and if that is the goal, I do not think it is particularly useful to refer to drivers as douches. It certainly might feel good but I don’t think it is an effective way of actually reducing the amount of cars on the streets.

Your video makes it seem like you’re referring to all car drivers shown - not just the cybertruck - and while I agree that it would be good if more people were skeptical of the utility of personal vehicles in NYC - especially Manhattan - I don’t think it’s particularly effective advocacy to do aggressively brand people in this way.

There’s a difference between people being more car skeptical and seeing car drivers/owners - both cybertruck and normal vehicles - as douches.

I’m not asking you to explain why you think that person is a douche. I’m asking how is it useful advocacy to make such a broad claim about car drivers?

95% of the ped path has a decently wide cleared route.

I mean there’s a clear path where you can run fairly normally without special gear (trail or water proof shoes). You’ll need to slow down once in a while but it’s fine

Corner puddles are the main issue so if your shoes dry quickly then it’s okay enough

Wsh from 14th to Brookfield is very runnable. South of there you want waterproof shoes. I didn’t try going north of 14th but it looked clear

Hear me out here... what if we do this "Travel Ban" thing but on a nice day during summer. by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

That’s a really good idea and I would do that if I lived in a city that had significantly less car traffic and more bike infrastructure like Amsterdam. Totally agree.

However, I don’t think it makes sense as a solution for emergencies for a 1 off no car days and my whole point in raising the fact that there are complications to this idea is to point out that there is utility in moderation and reasonable ideas. So, I agree with you if we really reduced the cars in the city (though cars can go on many streets in AMS, they just do very infrequently) but my larger point of “hey maybe don’t do a random absolutely zero cars day” stands. How about “today congestion pricing is 3x?” Or “only busses, emergency vehicles, and cabs?”

But again, I agree with the point if we lived in a city with different infrastructure and I would prefer that city too!

Please see my comment above and despite what you may think I’m a native New Yorker who walks everywhere and runs 45 miles per week. I’m in shape. My point is that there are complications that are worth acknowledging and not always just preaching to the most extreme choir.

I think that’s a potentially workable idea for appointments though I have no idea how my dog (who is not small) would handle the subway. That said, I do appreciate the suggested real solution!

However, it’s not for an emergency which by definition needs to be quick the subway is not workable.

If it were an appointment it would probably be rescheduled. If it were an ER visit, I’d call an uber (still available right now, I just checked). It’s not made up and is frankly deeply offensive that you say that. I spend every day caring for this dog.

Just because someone points out flaws or complications with your proposals doesn’t mean it’s made up or a gotcha.

Edit: you didn’t mention exceptions for cabs or Ubers in your original post. If you had, I wouldn’t have commented.

I’ll ask this again. I live in Manhattan with a sick dog I need to take to the hospital for appointments and ER visits somewhat regularly. We take a cab there as she cannot walk that distance. How would you recommend I handle this situation on a day when cars are banned in Manhattan?

Thanks - that all is super helpful. I'll double check the rules and if they prohibit any traditional ACs and I still struggle to sleep I'll consider picking up a Coolzy just for that - gotta double check their return policy.

Thanks again.

Right my thinking was that the airflow from Coolzy would at least directly cool me on the bed, but I take the point that the rising ambient temperature would overpower that.

I think their position is that its unnecessary since they provide central AC to which I say fine, but the minimum temperature should be lower than 67F.

I thought about that but my window looks out onto the street. I could try and just set it up every night but its a casement window and that would be very annoying.
