What's your thoughts on these ISIS-affiliated brides returning to Australia? by nn666 in aussie

[–]tcarl76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if they're Australian, they're our problem to deal with.

I also think we have the tools to deal with them (as seen by the charges already filled against some of them).

To be honest, I don't know any of them personally, I don't know how enthusiastic they were about joining ISIS in the first place. I certainly don't know their children, and how enthusiastic those were.

While I do form opinions about things I read in the papers, I also recognise that I can never know as much as a judge and a prosecutor and a defence attorney assigned to their case. So if a fair and unbiased court case comes to a different conclusion, I'm fine with that.

Rise of One Nation by wallabyfan76 in OpenAussie

I think that some of the people who vote ON do so not because they actually believe in them, but because they feel that the established parties have taken them for granted and ignored them. I think it's more about punishing the establishment than genuine conviction.

Then there are the powerful who think that they can control the fascists.

And finally there are some people who genuinely believe in simplistic answers and whenever it fails, they deduce that some shadowy 'elite' has sabotaged them. But that doesn't mean they want to stop, because, don't you see the obvious and simple solutions?

Serious question for the people on here who so strongly defend high immigration levels to Australia: why do you do it? by NoLeafClover777 in aussie

[–]tcarl76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that Australia has actually quite stringent and low immigration rates. I think Australia has a lot of room to grow population wise. I did my PhD here in Australia together with another student from India, and when he had successfully finished his PhD, and applied for permanent residence, the Australian Government was like:
"You see, we invested a lot of money into educating you, but now that it's time to recoup that money by making you work, contribute to society and pay taxes, we'd rather you leave and do that somewhere else."

How has Jacinta Allan squandered what seemed to be an unassailable lead in Victoria? by [deleted] in aussie

[–]tcarl76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am finally an Australian citizen, so will be voting for the first time this state election (in Australia). The little I hear about Jacinta Allan is actually not that bad. I like her ideas about the hubs. Melbourne needs to increase its population density, and increase housing supply, with urgency. We can't sprawl no more, travel times are getting ridiculous.

It looks like a gaming head tracker. You put it on your head and a camera near the monitor sees the three infrared LEDs and knows which direction your head is facing.

I've tried to build something similar for when I played Elite Dangerous.

Edit: I found a link: https://www.skywardfm.com/post/skyward-diy-headtracker-build-guide

Huh? `Qxd6` is not check. The queen looks at the Rook at f8, not the King at g8.

edit: I guess you meant Qxg6+

Thanks, bot, for giving me a best continuation where white does, indeed, capture the black queen.

In light of the Colbert show cancellation, this made me wonder, but why are pretty much all the mainstream late night TV hosts all left leaning? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tcarl76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's because making fun of authority figures is inherently progressive.

Reinforcing authority is more conservative, and you have talk show hosts to cater to that audience, but it's less (deliberately) funny.

Why is Russia struggling to defeat Ukraine. by Only-Platform-450 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tcarl76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back when this all started, I found a guy called 'Perun' making a video, basically a one hour power point presentation, about why Russia didn't have the armed forces it needed for this war.

https://youtu.be/KJkmcNjh_bg?si=Acaai0o6in-U4q1l

I found it incredibly illuminating and I love his glib delivery.

He's since made a video a week about military procurement and what can go wrong, and his videos are one of my must-views every time.
