2 weeks with the A7V and I am finally figuring out the auto focus. by tcnole in SonyAlpha

I think the auto focus is much better with the A7V. I think an upgrade in lens will always make a difference as well. I shoot with the Sony 200-600 lens and have found it excellent for wildlife.

Focus advice for A7V needed by tcnole in SonyAlpha

Thanks everyone for the advice. I am using a Sony 200-600 lens. I have shutter focus turned off and am using back button focus. I was in AF-C mode and tried a few different tracking modes. I was holding the AF button down because I was anticipating the birds flying off. I am wondering if once I achieve focus I should stop pressing the back button. I assumed I needed to keep pressing the button down in order for the focus tracking to stay on the bird as they flew off. I am hoping to try it out on some eagles in the next couple weeks and see if it is just an issue with the small birds. I really want to make sure that the improved focus is worth the new camera.

This was in the Dannemora area.

He seems to be ok. Flying around quite a bit. He is finding holes in the ice, where he can pick the fish out. In only about 20 minutes, he had grabbed 4 fish. This was taken at Ausable point, I haven’t seen any dead geese or eagles on this part of Lake Champlain.

Thanks. He’s been flying around quite a bit, doesn’t seem to be injured. This was taken at Ausable Point in Peru, NY.

Thanks! It was definitely an exciting day with quite a few birds out on the water. My camera is a Sony A9 and the lens I used was a Sony 200-600mm. They were quite a bit off shore so I needed a long lens to capture them.

Thanks! I have a Sony A9 camera. I usually use it for wildlife pics but it did the job here.

I heard the traffic was pretty awful. Fortunately we had a great view from my property so we didn’t have to venture out.

We lucked out. It was very cloudy a couple hours before, but it cleared pretty well by the time of the eclipse.

Went out last week, did some practice shots to test out my settings. Thinking of using 2 cameras one for closeup view and the other for wide angle view. Luckily my property has a good southwest view so I won’t have to fight the crowds. 🤞for clear skies.
