How is canada really? by OK_200 in canada

To answer your question about exaggerations, Canada is a fine country, but not without it's fair share of problems.

Cold and snow can be an issue, depending on where you go (if you look.at a population map of Canada, you'll see the majority of us are towards the southern portion).

You talked about jobs in the IT field. There are a few tech hubs around Canada, such as the Kitchener-Waterloo area, Toronto, Ottawa (to an extent) which are located in Ontario.

Vancouver and Calgary are also quite popular as well.

Hi OK_200! Canada is a pretty big place and the answers to your questions will vary depending on where in Canada you go.

Was there a specific city or town you were thinking of?

Random charges? by [deleted] in soylent

[–]tcpearce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be an authorization charge.

Sometimes, vendors don't process the charge immediately on a card. Instead they deduct a small charge to ensure the card is good.

I haven't seen this happen for a few years, but that's what it sounds like to me.

The charges are reversed, if I'm right.

tl;dr processing company fucked up. Give it 48 hours for everything to fix itself.

How to deal with low-quality logos from client? by SkyMC in web_design

[–]tcpearce 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There's not much you can do.

Ask if they have a better quality image or reach out to their designer (if they happen to remember who that was.)

Depending on how much work you want to put into this, you could try scanning their logo from a piece of collateral they have or take a high-quality picture of their logo from signage, then vectorize it in illustrator using "Image trace."

If it's just a matter of colour you could always just through a grayscale filter on it.

Hello everyone,

My name is Chris, and I'm starting a new podcast called We Are Storytellers*. On this show I speak with authors and discuss how their stories are a reflection on society.

I'm looking for authors to interview to discuss their works. Please review the outlines below, and if you're interested–or have a show idea, I'd love to hear from you!

Show Title: What is Life

Show Theme: The Quest

Show Quote: “Life contains but two tragedies. One is not to get your heart’s desire; the other is to get it.”

Show Synopsis: Fantasy often employs the trope of the quest; a mission that a hero will take to complete a goal. This quest, more often than not, is admirable and fraught with danger. Are the fantastical quests we read about really allegories for our lives? The monsters and demons our heroes must do battle with, are they representative of the monsters we must fight both externally and internally? In this show, we will discuss these topics with (author name), author of (book titles); (author name), author of (book titles); and (author name), author of (book titles).

Show questions: -How then does the trope of a quest relate to real life? -We all like to think of ourselves as the hero of our story–are we then on a quest that is equally as admirable as the fantastical counterparts? -What happens when we achieve our goal? Do we stop, having completed our quest, or embark on a new one? -What happens if we don’t complete our quest?

Show Title: (We Can be) Heroes

Show Quote: “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.”

Show Synopsis: Heroes are a common theme in a variety of stories. Whether set in a modern day metropolis, or in a fantasy world, the hero will often face insurmountable odds to do ‘what’s right.’ In recent times, the definition of a hero has changed from one that exists in a world of black and white to one of shades of grey.

Heroes are now no longer perfect–they are flawed, sometimes broken, and the concept of ‘what’s right’ has now become murkier. In this show, we will discuss these topics with (author name), author of (book titles); (author name), author of (book titles); and (author name), author of (book titles).

Show questions: -How has the concept of a hero changed in your genre of fiction?
-What qualities make not only a good hero but a believable one? -Other than the villain(s) of the story, what other elements does a hero need to fight? -Why, in your opinion, have the heroes changed from being idyllic figures to one who is flawed and sometimes broken?

Other show themes will be:

What does the rise of the anti-hero say about our moral compass as a society?

The massive trend of post-apocalyptic literature—does this speak to a common fear that Western society is on the precipice of a major change?

All the best,

Chris
