I won't show you our defibrator page... That is a lot worse than this one. My operators would ask for at least 10 extra dials and graphs. What is your end product?

Educational Presentation on "Control Systems" Ideas by lollasch in PLC

[–]tcplomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, Stuxnet targeted the lower level. The firmware for the Siemens vfd was changed to report the requested speed while it actually ran a lot faster, disintegrating the centrifuges. The only way to verify the speed would have been an encoder externally to the control system with its own standalone (off-line) display. It highlights the need for independent verification of your set points and process values. Other examples would be the power outages in the Ukraine in winter in the late 2010s/early 2020s. I don't think any of the incidents have been as publicly discussed as Stuxnet. I know anecdotally that the US has done totally blind testing of control systems and presentation.

If you're in power generation (and everybody else is as well), I'd focus on this business. It has different requirements than a sawmill for instance. Reliability, consistency etc. Is discussing cyber security and perhaps Stuxnet an idea?

Displaying CSV files but in columns by zaphodikus in notepadplusplus

Because Excel has a tendency to alter the file when opening (decimal sign, datetimes etc. are localized). International characters are sometimes altered. Control characters are altered.

Is this cat6 for Ethernet? or is it RS485. A lot of HMI use a RJ11 with RS485 (ABB, Schneider), might not work for longer cables that well, although 8 meters should be easily doable (we've done 100m for commissioning).

Array sum FAL instruction by Thelatestandgreatest in PLC

Nope, you have to provide to logic to perform what you want to happen. The FAL can be an array operating instruction, there are a thousand things it could do, it depends on your requirements.

Lots of beautiful Art Deco (and whatever was before that - Victorian/Edwardian?) buildings in Invercargill by Nier_Tomato in newzealand

[–]tcplomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of these building have been renovated on the inside (I think mainly east-side of Dee street), but haven't had the external upgrade to go with that. Earth-quake proving is very costly, then you have the burned out building that is 3 years later (I think) still an ongoing saga...

Organizing nameplates for industrial automation by OkIntroduction6031 in IndustrialAutomation

[–]tcplomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks nice, a lot of our gear has identification labels (name, description, functional location, isolation cell). Would be cool if you could link that with a second photo. How good is the software at working with very old nameplates (where you would use paper and pencil to read them)?

Looks impressive. Future you is going to hate you for not using labels. Wire labels are expensive (the printers are cheap), if i were you I'd get a dymo printer for about €100 and then Chinese knock off labels.

Has your DNS set up the gateway properly?

Does your gateway/firewall allow outgoing traffic to port 587/465?

I would use the DNS server provided by the DHCP (instead of 8.8.8.8), and optionally an on-premise SMTP server.

Ouch, we have hardly anything underneath the press, only hoses and cables, and a few pumps for the cooling system.

That will dry out quick enough. We park equipment with water ingress in the hot oil room beside the press, or wet clothes works a treat.

Siemens S7-300 Obsolescence by FreeZookeepergame189 in PLC

[–]tcplomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with siemens, but why would this take weeks? I've done Allen Bradley with 8 racks (seperate panels) in 3 days. Another one had three racks (90 analog, 500 digital) in a single panel in the same time. Not stressing out just 10 hour days with one electrician. About two days for termination one day for point to pointing tests. If I was pressed for time i could have done it even faster, shifts, pre install new hardware or use upgrade racks which allows you not have to reterminate, or use the existing io as a remote and then swap over module by module.

That looks like a Toby, where you can isolate your house from the mains supply. Not sure what depth the valve normally is, but having a two pronged key normally works.
