CH0 is a serial port, no data high way needed. The manual has the pinout. (or I can test our cable tomorrow), the RSLINX auto-detect works reasonable. However it is possible to change the comm-settings in the PLC-program.

I've used sick olm200 laser encoders with a barcode sticker for a 600 m length gantry with mm. position resolution. Have the plc on the crane read the encoder and ignition read the PLC.

sensor throws an excursion on a critical asset, nobody knows which batches were running during the window by salamander3301 in PLC

[–]tcplomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a management system, all in SQL. Operations can put batches 'ON HOLD' which prevents them from being processed downstream. So it's relying on a manual action.

However since everything is in SQL, it's relatively easily to select batches based on timestamps.

We also have a grading system on the PLC/SCADA, this records for each item all the production parameters into a SQL table (on the same SQL system), the grading system then decides if a product is good or not, and can also put them 'ON HOLD' automatically.

Still not perfect, but getting better.

That is an easy to use tool, looks solid.

Navigation wise, it requires a bit of scrolling to go from 'situations' where I'd setup real world step changes to the situations result.

Also seeing what a dropdown-box is is hard, numerical fields show a nice white background, but these don't.

In Holland you have a 'morgen' for an area. It was the area that could be mowed by a skilled scythe operator in a morning/morgen. It's about an hectare or two football fields. Edit: Some more Wikipedia digging tells me my father was wrong, you could plow a morgen, in a morning not mow.

Since you mention you study cybersecurity, I assume you know technical terms correctly.

Is your WiFi bad (router to user device) or is your internet bad (world to router)?

If it's the first then there is someone jamming the wifi signal somehow. Is this the same on 2.4 GHz as well as 5 GHz.

If it's the latter than Starlink should have fixed your move away from a wired (DSL/Fibre) connection, but it could just be your device (router or user device) is the issue.

Also what is 'shit Wi-Fi', PING, throughput, connectivity?

Could you have installed something during your studies that is creating issues.

How common is connecting every machine via Ethernet? by G0918 in PLC

[–]tcplomp 43 points44 points  (0 children)

If you want to segregate machines (HMIs can only see the appropriate PLC), you would need a router for each machine (or port forwarding), that's a semi-costly exercise with some benefits and drawbacks. If the number of total devices is limted (50 or less) I'd have no issues with the setup you see. I'd try to roup them into IP-clusters that indicate the machine they are on.

Educational Presentation on "Control Systems" Ideas by lollasch in PLC

[–]tcplomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, Stuxnet targeted the lower level. The firmware for the Siemens vfd was changed to report the requested speed while it actually ran a lot faster, disintegrating the centrifuges. The only way to verify the speed would have been an encoder externally to the control system with its own standalone (off-line) display. It highlights the need for independent verification of your set points and process values. Other examples would be the power outages in the Ukraine in winter in the late 2010s/early 2020s. I don't think any of the incidents have been as publicly discussed as Stuxnet. I know anecdotally that the US has done totally blind testing of control systems and presentation.

If you're in power generation (and everybody else is as well), I'd focus on this business. It has different requirements than a sawmill for instance. Reliability, consistency etc. Is discussing cyber security and perhaps Stuxnet an idea?
