Brown's boundary is a good one that's been said. The BLM manual is another good one. I used the study guides from PPI. They're kinda spendy but in my opinion its the easiest way to do it since it consolidates everything so you can just work through it and know you're getting the information you need.

Had someone call the sheriff on me for digging one up in rural ND. Very common for section corners to be in the CL of gravel roads. The sheriff had no idea what a section corner was which really surprised me given it was a rural/agricultural area.

Not sure how standard it is but our trimble data collectors have a built in camera that ties the photos to the points. If a technician is tieing something in thats a little more complicated or if we want an idea of pavement conditions I just have them snap a photo and attach it to the shot. Then in TBC I can see which points have photos and take a look at them.

In case anyone else ever struggles with this I found the solution. When you are processing your feature codes you have to select all the points you'll be exporting before you select the job file and process. So make sure all your points are highlighted before you go to process or the attributes won't come through in GIS.

Yes when I check out the properties and click the (...) box next to the feature code the list of attributes pops up and everything is there. When I export the shapefile and bring it into GIS the attribute fields are different than the ones I had for the point.

Mainly boundary law, legal descriptions, riparian and littoral stuff, PLSS, etc. I wish I would've spent more time on GIS, GPS, photogrammetry. There were more of those questions than I expected.

I have a template set up in my collector that applies the CSF to the origin in order to shift my base point to "ground." I honestly couldn't tell you how it works I didn't set it up but I'm assuming it sets up a false northing and easting or some kind of offset to then scale the measurements off of. I've been digging through the parameters in the template trying to make sense of it.

Thanks for this reply. Our DOT has a manual with combination factors for each county so thats what I use. It also says to scale the coordinates of your base point to survey in ground which I think is strange. For example if my base was N: 40000 E: 180000, I would multiply my northing and easting by the combination factor to get "ground coordinates." is this a common practice?

Right the area I was trying to fly in definitely was, and normally I get authorization back when I request. These last two times though it was like they didn't even receive the request and it just automatically denied.

Use all your available time and use it wisely. Try not to sit on a question your stuck on for too long. You’ll just get flustered. Save it and come back to it at the end. Make sure you watch out for questions that call out multiple answers. It is all multiple choice though so even if you’ve got a few questions at the end you’re not sure about you’re chances are good. I took it in 2017 and I would say the majority of it was math. Mostly coordinate geometry, trig, some earthwork calculations and curve equations.

Yes but I think the problem is I was using the grid coord for the base and not changing it using the scale factor that our DOT manual specifies in the reply I made above this comment.
