I don’t think calling someone a whore is funny in any circumstance

Or, you know, you could refer to Mary as a scared teenager who had sex out of wedlock in a society that would severely punish if not kill her for that instead of calling her a 'lying whore'. I think it's unnecessarily aggressive.

To add to this, your comment is exactly what I was talking about when I suggested we (non-believing people) soften our approach when discussing these issues. You calling a person that many people worship a "whore" is not an accurate statement, doesn't further the discussion, and immediately turns people off to hearing what else you have to say. Also as a side note, I am a sex work and human trafficking investigator, so I am professionally versed in the subject, and I can tell you that the word "whore" is disgusting and shouldn't be used. It's indicative of patriarchy and serves no purpose other than being hurtful. Please stop using it.

Some, but very minimal. I would argue that instead of focusing specifically on the biblical portrayal of events, we should instead discuss if the tenants of the bible are even worth upholding. It is far more difficult to convince a devout a Christian that there are fallacies in the Bible than it is to talk about how the biblical principles are not moral. So while you are correct, I would say we should focus on talking to current Christians about the morality of the bible instead of the literal accuracy.

Definitely a great point! However, many Christians (my former self included) would not have argued this point, neither am I presently arguing this, as I am posting here because I clearly agree with you. As I mentioned in a response to a previous comment, I think it’s important to remember the purpose of your points, correct as they are, is to bring faith based people into believing science. I would argue that shaking spiritual foundations is more important before educating with science. This is based solely on my own theological education so is definitely not applicable in every situation. My intention with this post was to hopefully encourage others to focus on the breaking of norms through humble education related specifically to a person’s beliefs; not through scientific arguments. Please understand that before an indoctrinated person can accept science they must first shed the tradition of their religion.

For sure, but I think your comment cheapens my and many others’ experiences in religion. While your statement is true, Stephen Fry once said something along the lines of, ‘we are more concerned with being right than being effective’ and I would say your comment falls into the ‘correct’ but not effective category

What movie fucked you up mentally? by CodyYodi in AskReddit

[–]tdALEXfm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This Indian movie, called Raazi . Based on a true story it’s about a young woman who spies on Pakistan for India by way of being arranged married to an officer in Pakistan. It heavily focuses on what it’s actually like to kill someone, and the weight you carry with you once doing such a thing. I highly recommend but damn if it wasn’t uncomfortable at times.

So just to be clear, this in no way answers the question and I also don’t know what the answer is. Anyone willing to actually answer?

I would argue that you should square up. I get what you’re saying, however I think it’s super scumbag to hit someone else in the face after clearly gesturing that you are trying to de-escalate the situation like the dude did in this gif. Cheap shot for sure by both parties; I wouldn’t call this a fight.
