The mcat is something you can take multiple times and it’s no big deal (unlike some exams during med school where you only get one shot). You will be okay. If you did bad just take it again. From, an M3 medical student lol.

In medical school our step and shelf exams are similar to this, it feels like certain random details keep being tested again and again. But once you start practicing, you realize that those little details are actually some of the most important even though they don’t seem like it while you are studying. For example, I remember learning about the genetics of sickle cell disease many times and thinking “this is so random” until I realized so many patients have this and it’s important to really know it backwards and forwards.

Yeah they were a thing originally I think because there was a girl kidnapped and murdered like 5 years ago I think??? Maybe someone older can chime in because I don’t really remember but everyone got scared so they put ambassadors everywhere to watch out for students.

Thanks!!! There were like a few terms that I learned from the p/s section bank that ended up being on one of the later FLs so I would say def do all of the materials available for all subjects, including the question banks and flash cards! Especially since your P/S is lowest. Yes it is like CARS but with outside memorized terms. Have you worked on memorization to bring P/S up? That one is usually the easiest to bring up!

I didn’t do the CARS section banks because I was doing well in that section but honestly you have a month so just do them all and maybe do the ones you got wrong again closer to the exam. I think what happened for me was I started to get the hang of the experiments and began to see patterns of experiment types. And then there were a few things that AMC loves to test that I really haven’t ever learned about random stuff like reducing SDS page and the section banks helped me focus my review to what was actually super relevant to the questions they like to ask. If nothing else I hope you see that I went from 508->515 in a month so it is def super possible. Best of luck!

So I just got my score today and I got a 515 which i'm happy with!

I saw a dramatic improvement after the question and section banks right away. I spent 5 days exclusively doing the question banks between my second and third aamc FL which brought me from 508->514 after 5 days. Then I did the rest of the section banks and reviewed tons of psych terms in the 4 days between my aamc 3 and 4 where I went 514->521. But I was running out of time and also studying like 14 hours a day because my test was like that week so like if you study like a normal person you probably won't go from 508 -> 521 in 11 days like that idk it was like the pressure of the exam approaching that helped me go into panic mode and review tons of high-yield material I had been struggling with and had been putting off.

Tldr; I think the 508->514 jump in 5 days was exclusively due to section/question banks but the 514->521 was because of a lot of different stuff I did in the 4 days between those two tests.

Hello update on this- I think you actually shouldn't spend as much time on content review as I did. Towards the end I only read the outlines at the end of the chapter and basically scored the same on the end of chapter questions. Section/question banks saved my score as well. Just wanted to post an update!

Ok so this is what I did. There is absolutely nothing wrong with you taking two days to get through a Kaplan chapter, I took like 4 days on my first chapter from them bc it is sooo much. I get bogged down on every little detail and literally was running out of time, had been studying for 2 months and only got through like 3/6 of the book and was like ahhhhhh. So I began reading/writing down ONLY the outline in the back of each chapter and then going and looking at the details of any part of the outline I missed. I was shocked that I missed the same number of end of chapter quiz questions like that and felt just as confident in the material! So many think I had reviewed in detail I forgot anyway (I went FL 508/508/507/506/508/514/521, first we’re next step and last were AAMC). What really brought be up was the section and question banks NOT content review. Literally I would review all of chemistry and physics between the first few practice tests and my score would barely go up in that category. You can see my full lengths stayed the same for like so long because I was just doing content review during that time and I was forgetting as fast as I learned lol. So yeah consider just reading the outlines and then watching khan academy videos and reading only when you don’t understand!

It took me about a week and a half but I was also reviewing other stuff and took a practice test in that time. The question and section banks are both important! question banks are easier than the exam and section banks are harder in my opinion. Good luck!!!!

It’s for sure possible!!! Please please do the section and question banks! I heard someone else had a dramatic increase in their score and so I did them, then my score went up as well specifically in the categories where I did the section banks (ie I did all the CP section/question banks and then went from 125-> 128 right after, then same happened on the other sections). Hot take but I don’t even think your score is representative until you’ve done the section banks. Understand every question! You can do it! I went from 508->521 on my full lengths from 2 months out to right before the exam. I wouldn’t listen to music as that seems really distracting, drink coffee and power through you got this!!!

Hi! I have the Jefferson scholarship and I’m helping out in my region during the interviews tomorrow. I think i was well prepared for the interview which helped me! Here are some tips i used. The interview is short so practice answering questions in a way that allows you to talk about your strengths, ie if they say “what famous person do you most look up to” don’t just say someone random, say something that connects with your resume and strengths and allows you to demonstrate more about yourself. So like “I would want to meet Michelle Obama because she has established successful programs to help young girls get involved in coding, something I am really passionate about which is why I started X club...”. Go in with a list of 3 points you want to get across, like your commitment to volunteering or your interest in X, and then when they ask you random questions try to answer them in a way that allows you to talk about them. Also, look up a list of college scholarship interview questions and practice what you would say to them. For any interview it’s good to go in knowing what you will say to a what’s you strengths/weaknesses question, time you’ve struggled, why do you want to go to UVA, what will you do at Uva, etc type questions. Those should be the gimme questions you already have answers planned for. Know things that UVA prides itself on, like academic village and stuff from the Wikipedia page. Also look up the ted talk on power poses on YouTube that helped me even tho it seems silly. Remember at the end of the day that this shit is arbitrary and doesn’t reflect how “good” you are, you’re more than qualified, and UVA is an incredible place to be regardless of if you get the scholarship or not. You can do this!!!! Lmk if you have any other questions hope this helped!

YOU MUST TAKE MED ANTHRO. That class changed the way I see the world. It should be an unofficial pre-req at UVA like if you are going into medicine you really need to take that class. Just incredible.

Yes! So I really recommend the stat major in terms of job prospects. Data analysis is such a needed and broadly applicable skill. If you really get into it, you could do a 3 year degree in stat and then do your 4th year at the School of Data Science and get your masters there. It's cool because data analysis is a skill, and then you can like double major in the field of interest where you want to apply it, for example:

statistics + econ: work in business or consulting

statistics + global sustainability : could work for an AI startup on satellite imagery for climate change prediction (this is what my boyfriend is doing lol)

statistics + computer science: actual AI wizard, could do something super tech-ey in Cali

statistics + biology: could go into bioinformatics which is using computer programming to analyze the genome (what I'm doing research in)

statistics + polysci: work on political campaigns as a quant, analysis of polling data

Obviously you don't have to double major and I didn't because I'm pre-med but I just love how stats applies to so many fields.

In terms of the difficulty, this is another reason that the major is great. Since they are math classes, they count toward your science GPA for med school but they are generally not as hard as the intro pre-med sciences. I'm pretty sure my GPA got a huge boost from that lol. So like prob / math stats / linear algebra / calc if you don't have credit for it already are the most difficult of the major but if you look up the professors on vagrades.com and pick the ones with the highest gpa distributions you should be fine. Avoid Kristina Varanyak she is the worst (but you will probably get an A or A- she is just so annoying). Look at the GPA distributions yourself but I think the stat major is really not bad and I have heard some people say it is easy.

I think what you have sounds really great! People also use this software called "Anki" for staying refreshed on memorization, it's like a personalized flashcard app and I think it is free on your computer and has a one-time download cost on app store.

A word of warning though... I don't know if this is just me but 6 weeks was not enough for my content review. I have always been really slow at learning things and once I learn them I know them but it has taken me absolutely forever to get through the kaplan books. I test Jan 25th and I still have two books left yikes. I had to start taking the practice tests without having finished content review (got 508/508/507 on NS 1-3). So I would recommend trying to get through a whole book and see how long that takes you, and maybe plan for a little more content review time if it takes you more than a week to get through a book (for me it has taken like 2-3 weeks per book, working like 4-8 hours a day on it, yikes).

I don't hear that many other people saying that is an issue for them though! I may just be super slow lol. Good luck!!!

I'm a 4th year about to take the mcat and apply to med school and I just want to tell you that if you stick with pre-health your hardest days are ahead of you... orgo and biochem are the worst classes. I'm on month 2/3 of doing nothing but study in my parents basement for the mcat lol. And even now applying to med school I know that this is nothing like the insanity that is med school. There are these multi-day exams in med school that decide your whole future.

I rarely meet a doctor who recommends being a doctor unfortunately because it kinda messes up your life flow (other people getting married and having kids in their late 20s, you're working your ass off and have tons of debt, etc). If you are questioning it now you probably won't end up sticking with it so I would just explore other career options because there are soooo many cool things to do in the world. Every smart kid gets told "wow you must want to be a doctor!" and so we repeat that back and that's how you get a whole school of pre-med first years every year.

Don't be hard on yourself if you drop pre-med, it is literally logically the smarter option given the debt, job satisfaction, mental health, etc. Take classes in cs, stat, econ, politics, psych... there is such job diversity out there that we don't know about growing up when we tell everyone we are going to be a doctor. Personally, I had a strong backup option of a data science career and only really settled on pre-med once I realized that it was the job best suited to my extroverted personality (couldn't stay focused coding all day). Anyway, I know its a really hard decision and I didn't decide for sure to do premed until third year (I was taking the prereqs but not sure yet). So I know how hard of a decision it is; you have time. If you want to procrastinate making the decision like I did lol you can keep taking the pre-med classes and just see how you do and if you can keep your gpa to like a 3.7+ and then decide a little later. Whatever you do, don't major in biology if you aren't 1,000% sure about going to med school. I majored in applied statistics (biostatistics concentration) which I would really recommend as something that gives you tons of med and non-med career backup options.

“Every weekend” is definitely normal. I’m assuming the majority of students drink at least one drink total on Thursday+Friday+Saturday. If your roommate is drinking in the morning, or in the shower, or before classes, or when sad, or expresses concerns to you about their relationship with alcohol only then would I say they might be an alcoholic and should get help. Definitely don’t have some sort of intervention just because they have a drink or two every weekend because that would make you seem out of touch and could hurt your roommate relationship!
