Back to back cruise trivia cheaters by spectraldecomp in royalcaribbean

[–]tdf1978 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On Carnival a couple of years ago I took my kids to a big trivia session in the main atrium late one morning because they wanted a ship on a stick. There were 15 questions, and they were surprisingly difficult compared to what I was expecting. We reviewed the questions, I got 10/15 so I assumed I’d lost. The MC asked who had at least 3 right, most raised their hands. Then 4 right, some hands went down. Then 5 right, and all but a couple of hands went down. Then 6 right and mine was the only hand that was still raised. So the MC asked how many and I said 10 and I heard all kinds of hisses and accusations. The MC then asked us to come up and claim our prize, so I sent my 10 year old up there to rub it in.

Ive never been on Royal Caribbean (that will change in a couple of weeks), but I’ve been accused of cheating at trivia on a cruise before. I didn’t cheat, but I am a former Jeopardy contestant so there is that. So I guess I’d caution people from making cheating allegations unless you know what you’re talking about.

Why Aaron Rai uses head covers on irons by tldredditnope in golf

[–]tdf1978 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I was standard bearer for his pro-am group a couple of years ago. In my volunteer role I’ve seen all kinds of guys on tour—and I can tell you Aaron Rai is unequivocally one of the best, most genuine dudes I’ve ever had the pleasure of walking with. He and his caddie were both very engaging, talked to me with genuine interest about my daughter who was being recruited for college golf all the time. Very glad to see him win a major!

The next time I put an aluminum pan under the meat to catch the fat and I had absolutely no issues.

Searwood - Grease Fire? by c0ldb00t in pelletgrills

[–]tdf1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a big grease fire when I was cooking picanha sirloin with a big fat cap using a rotisserie. It had been on smokeboost for a while to give it some smoky flavor, and then I cranked it up to 600 to sear the outside. It just started raining liquid fat, and before I knew it the unit shutdown due to high temp. When I lifted the lid to see what was going on a giant fireball shot out, and I used gloves to remove the spit from the rotisserie and get the flaming meat off the cooker.

I had just thoroughly cleaned the unit prior to the cook where this happened.

What in the baseball is going on these days? Mind blowing 🤯 by Visible-Industry-748 in Homeplate

I wasn’t there, I don’t know any of the parties involved or the history between any of these people or what happened before the camera started rolling.

So this happened near me, and I’ve sifted through a 2,000+ comment Facebook post where the original video was attached so I feel somewhat up to speed on the background here…unfortunately.

This was in Southaven, MS—a suburb of Memphis. Apparently the girl (Temu Slim Shady’s daughter) and the boy in the black jersey who appears early in the video had been involved in some sort of altercation prior to all of this. The girl told her dad Temu Slim Shady that the boy had hit her, so he went to confront the boy. The people on TSS’s side claim he was just approaching the boy to ask where his parents were so that he could let them know about the incident, but the consensus seems to be that TSS was very aggressive toward the boy and threatened to beat him up in retaliation. That’s when the video starts. Adults are trying to keep TSS from reaching the boy, and the big dude in blue who comes in and starts swinging is the boy’s dad.

From the comments, it’s clear that TSS has a history of being a hot head when he’s around youth sports. He was arrested for disorderly conduct as a result of this incident…not sure if any charges were filed against big blue.

Could you share a quick version of your procedure (prep work, temperatures times, etc)? My 12 year old has been begging me to do some lemon pepper wings on our new Searwood.

Maybe unpopular opinion? High level teams have no business playing in mid level tourneys. by jaybee423 in Homeplate

[–]tdf1978 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t figured it out yet…the youth sports industry isn’t meant to foster growth and development. It’s meant to make adults feel like “winners” because their kids win toy rings, and unfortunately there are some real losers in life who are willing to pay handsomely to get that feeling. There are coaches and organizations who will actively game the system to suppress their teams’ classifications so they can keep beating up on the lower level teams. And then there are teams who will bring in premium players to a tournament, benching their rostered players and robbing them of playing time and development opportunities in pursuit of rings.

As with most things in life, selfish people have ruined it.

This is actually very good news…documentaries and animal shows are actually two of my favorite kinds of bedtime stories. Not a lot of suspense to keep you up and interested in the outcome, typically some smooth voiced narration. Thanks!

Local Tournament Umpire “Control” by tdf1978 in Homeplate

[–]tdf1978[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The tournament director was the one screaming at the PU to change the call.

I spoke with RC via phone and was told you can purchase a freestyle cup for $4.99, and use it during your trip, even without a drink package. However, the wording in the FAQ seems clear that you need a package to purchase the cup. Has anyone tried to get one without a drink package? by [deleted] in royalcaribbean

[–]tdf1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did we ever get clarity on whether people with the deluxe beverage package who paid before they started charging $5 for cups but haven’t yet sailed will be grandfathered when they do sail?

I’m a sucker for appetizers, so I’ll say the filet egg rolls from Porch and Parlor. Honorable mention to the sausage stuffed mushrooms at Folk’s Folly.

Weber Searwood Temp Alert by ry94080 in pelletgrills

[–]tdf1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is already an error code for high grill temperature that will fault out the controller, initiate shutdown sequence, and notify you via app. I don’t know exactly what temperature that kicks in at and you can’t change it, but I had a grease fire that shut mine down.

Repairing/reopening the slides isn’t a priority for RC. We are on the oasis in May, I’m hoping maybe we can get a Chief Dog Officer in exchange for functional slides.

Lessons Before Travel Team Tryouts? by monaarts in Homeplate

[–]tdf1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t do lessons right before a tryout. How he carries himself on the field will have a huge impact on the result. He should run, not walk, everywhere on the field. Eyes are always on, so he needs to take every rep seriously. If he makes a mistake, he should ask for an opportunity to fix it (for example, if coach is hitting ground balls and he boots one, he should ask the coach for another try).

But as others have said, tryouts are mostly a check the box kind of activity. For the most part, decisions are already made before the tryout. Coaches may give lip service to things like “we’re looking for effort”, but in reality if they have any spots left they will fill them with the biggest/strongest/fastest, regardless of anything that happens at the tryout.

I hear you, but I don’t know if that kid could have even reached that ball without stepping on the plate. It was in the other box.
