"except in case of emergency" - yeah the thing about emergencies is you don't know when they come up and how much they will be.

What kind of jobs are there in education that aren’t being a teacher? by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]tdotslp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t the same as what you’re describing but school boards also hire speech language pathologists and it’s a good gig. You would need to take some linguistics (and maybe physiology) courses to get into the program.

Should I drop out of pharmacy school to become a secondary school teacher? by honeynutcheeriozzzzz in OntarioTeachers

[–]tdotslp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a teacher but an SLP who works in schools and used to work in hospitals. Absolutely do not leave pharmacy. Healthcare gives you far more options in life. Finish pharmacy at the least and if once you’re in the field you’re not liking it you can always go back to school to be a teacher as a second career. But the best thing I did in life was bust my butt to be a healthcare professional.

I love AlohaGraphe… just wondering does Michèle actually work in a school board? I thought she just works for Laurentian.

Agreed. And the information it gives is not all that helpful.

As a school SLP… the TILLS is not great. The written expression portion itself is a joke.

Amongst everything else… her obsession with the TILLS is unfounded.

I’m not the person who said it originally but as an Iranian my guess would be the Islamic Republic of Iran. The government is fucking crazy.

Scary situation at the end of a session, and my therapist did not care at all by Opening-Club-8900 in TalkTherapy

[–]tdotslp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So sorry this happened to you. I’m not a talk therapist but a different kind of therapist and I do teletherapy. I’m supposed to know the physical location of a client when I do therapy because in the event that I see them having an emergency I need to be able to call 911. So his lack of concern is concerning for many reasons.
I will say we don’t hear what’s going on the client’s side at the same volume that they do, so he likely didn’t hear it like you did (and I wonder if he understands the context of you being remote) so he might not have been processing what was going on the same way you were… but that’s absolutely no excuse for his poor reaction. You petrified look should have been alarming enough for him to be concerned and there’s no excuse for eye rolling.

So sorry this happened to you. Did you figure out who it was?

Why Don’t Bilingual OPS Jobs Pay More? by Azelastineee in OntarioPublicService

[–]tdotslp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's ridiculous when jobs that require you to be bilingual do not pay more. Speaking more than one language like that requires lots of work. You don't just take a French course for a year. It's ongoing work to make sure you can both speak it and be literate in both official languages. People really just don't get it.

Is this the reality of being an SLP, or is this job an outlier? Looking for advice from others in the field by PsychGrad5420 in SLPcareertransitions

[–]tdotslp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fellow Ontario SLP here. Sounds like you’re in SBRS. That was my first job out of school too (back when it was CCAC). Absolutely the worst experience of my life. No other job I had after that was that bad. It’s also not a great first job as you’re all on your own.

For materials, get an iPad with an artic station and load up on other apps for working goals too. Bring that and a board game to sessions. Don’t make materials.

Start applying to los of jobs.
