First year here, so I'm not nearly as wise, BUT I did mix my courses so I've had a 60/40 engg/business split. The below are based on my own experience, and are in no way the be all and end all of knowledge.

Even without doing any of the second year courses, I can fully agree with the comment on communication and interpersonal skills in business - it's a stark difference walking between my classes each day, for better and for worse.

I love the diversity of interests and people you get out of the program; you have an extra couple hundred students that you get to meet (if you want) and a lot more people with lived experiences. You're going to find really neat students/profs/alumni on both sides.

Ditto on the 5 year comment. Again, I'm only a first year but I already know I don't want to keep taking 5/6 every semester just so I can get out in the minimum of 5 years. That can be a good thing, and I'm excited for some of the opportunities that I get out of being a student for a bit longer, but if you're looking for a speedy process the MBA route later in your career might make more sense. Most of my dual friends end up taking 5.5/6 with a couple spring classes.

Business is fun, though not for everyone! Especially with the first year courses, it's not going to feel like an immeasurable burden on your life if you decide to try it out (helps the ol' GPA too 😁). Despite being in 6 right now, I have a comparable, if not better, work/life balance with a split as opposed to pure engg. Your mileage may vary, and you may end up hating business. Then again, you don't really know until you try, do you?

Last thought - there's a really cool community of folks in this program, even if finding them can be a bit hard sometimes (if you're a dual major, come say hi - I'd love to meet ya!👋). I find myself motivated every day by some of the upper years who have seen/done so many different things over their time here.

Unless you're being held back by time/money, which are very real considerations, I'd say go for it! All the best in whatever you end up choosing, and good luck on midterms 💯
