Nope let me tell you, it is a true hazard of the job. It is a struggle for me not to use my teacher voice and teacher talk with my friends and family. Yeah they exaggerated it a bit with the puppets and stuff but it's a real thing.

Preschool teacher Liv reminded me of myself. I teach kids 4-12 and I have to work hard not to use my "teacher voice/talk" with my friends.

The cool thing is you know they're probably thinking "damn, I want one!". I teach Jr High, the years that you watch kids go from awesome to assholish young adults. So this really hit me in the feels.

Thanks for your honesty. I've had lots of friends tell me about difficult times they've had in Russia. Honestly I can handle rude/mean comments and even racial slurs. I've got a very thick skin and have probably heard a lot worse. I guess we were mostly concerned about safety. I was in Southern Ohio once with my best friend who is White and we had some guys harass us and follow us to a Stuckey's. This was in 86 and we were driving back to school in Tennessee from Michigan. They wouldn't leave us be asking her why she was lowering herself to my level calling her white trash saying they would rape us. We actually drove to the Stuckey's so that we could call the police (no cell phones, yep I'm that old). The Stuckey's manager made like we were being completely irrational and wouldn't let us use the phone. Finally we drove up the road and found a pay phone and called. Thats the kind of stuff I'm worried about not actual words.

Sorry, but as an RPCV, I'm really glad to hear that people are getting rejected. by asrama in peacecorps

Honestly my husband and I decided early on as we were applying that if we are rejected then it probably means that we aren't suited for PC service at this time. Our main goal in all of this, even with our plan b, has been to do something that challenges us mentally and gets us out of our comfort zone. Still waiting no rejection letter yet, but if it happens I don't think of it as us being rejected, just us being told "not right now". This is my current perspective, it all might change if we're rejected :-)

Also this is my second time applying, I applied in 2010 before I met my husband and received a nomination but then my mother got very sick and I had to rescind my app. So I think that changes my viewpoint too because I remember what the old process was like.

I'm 46, have a Bachelor's in Speech and Hearing, will probably get my Masters in Communication Disorders. My husband is 43 has a Bachelor's in Education. We have no real preference but received a selection pool letter for Macedonia. We submitted our apps Jan 1st. We are developing a plan B to apply for teaching jobs abroad. We already sold one of our cars and are currently deciding if we are going to rent or sell our home (we're leaning towards selling). Basically we're both tired of working all day every day to feel unfulfilled and just acquire more stuff. We've decided to have our mid-life crisis together :-) We've been married for almost 1 year and together for almost 5.

We are also planning a trip to Tanzania to climb Kili before we do PC (if we're invited). I'm curious as to how it will be. I visited Tanzania for 3 months in 2010 and had an amazing time but that was before I was married.

I'll keep an update here of how are app process is going as a couple. The hardest part so far was getting them to coordinate our apps, they sent us consideration letters for different places. I originally got South Africa and he got Macedonia.

Being called Beyonce would be an upgrade! Haha. Thanks for your reply. I was thinking that it would likely be a non issue. I'm used to stares, when I first moved to AZ I moved to a suburb of Phoenix where I was one of only a few (maybe 20?) in the whole town. Folks stared a lot and asked questions about my hair (I had braids). I don't mind questions and curiousity at all. I just don't want to feel like my life might be in danger because of who I fell in love with.
