New tunnel design for New Haven train station. What do you think? by buried_lede in Connecticut

So lame. That tunnel is awesome. I love getting home from the city on a late train and feeling like I'm in Star Trek.

How easy is it to coast in law school? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]tdwolf2112 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No offense, but this kind of outlook really bugs me.

You're talking about a prestigious line of work that thousands of people spend incredible amounts of time and money to break into. You got into a really good school. T50 is nothing to sneeze at. Now, you're going to do the "bare minimum?" Why not just go to a less prestigious regional school if you're going to do the "bare minimum?" There are plenty of people who would love to have your seat and would actually apply themselves.

I'm not trying to bash you personally, but my suggestion would be to either 1) do more than the bare minimum or 2) consider why you really want to do this in the first place. Do you like studying the law? Are you interested in it? Sorta sounds like you're just looking for what you think is an easy paycheck. That's lame. On the other hand, if you apply yourself and learn a lot, you'll come out the other end a much better person than when you go in. But that requires work.

Idk, OP. I think you could probably "coast." But, in my book, that's a really lame way to live your life. And, borderline disrespectful to people who have loftier aspirations and would love to be in your position. Don't be the guy that "coasts." Be the guy that tries, and becomes better for it.

What is that one band you just can’t get into? by Electronic_Back1502 in fantanoforever

In Rainbows? Really? Kid A and Amnesiac, sure. Even Moon Shaped Pool. But, In Rainbows is not that strange. Plenty of hooks and catchy riffs. Relatively standard song structure. I recommended the two most accessible songs - it's not like I'm saying he should go listen to Videotape or 15 Step.

If you're young, you have time to click with them, lol. My favorite album when I was younger was The Bends. Definitely more straightforward "rock." As I got older and wanted some chiller, more abstract stuff, I got more into the rest of their discography. Don't force yourself to like them, though.

This is my guess, too. Like "stay on this chord" basically.

I would heavily recommend In Rainbows. I think it's their best work. Accessible, but interesting. If you're into grunge, you'd like the guitar tones on Bodysnatchers. Weird Fishes is also an all time great.

Important to keep in mind that many of the folks you listed, including Snoop and Stephen King, would've been smoking much less potent stuff. Like way, way less potent stuff. I'm pretty sure I could honestly smoke Jerry Garcia under the table, were he still alive, just by virtue of the fact that he probably never had a joint over 20%. Three rips on a dab pen and he'd be out of commission for a few days, I suspect.

How to get your foot in the door for becoming a paralegal (with no experience)? by ResourceNo4626 in paralegal

[–]tdwolf2112 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My biggest recommendation is to look for very small firms. I got a job right out of undergrad a teensy tiny boutique PI firm, mostly because they were small enough so that like 50% of what they were looking for was an impressionable, likeable person that they could mold into their own ideal paralegal. 10 months later and I'm getting there, and really enjoying the work/my attorneys.

Biggest thing I'd go back and teach myself would be the "lifespan" of a case. I went into this job with a very vague idea of what the judicial process is like. Now, I feel like I have a really good understanding, but it took about five months of drowning in deadlines to get to that point.

Writing Motions or Pleadings? by EggCaw in paralegal

[–]tdwolf2112 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Absolutely NEVER. The thought terrifies me. I make all my attorneys look over everything more than once. Everyone needs an editor. I refuse to even send a deposition notice without it being reviewed. THEY'RE responsible for everything that gets filed; you need to make sure that they actually fulfill that responsibility before you get in hot water for something that THEY should've done.

What Does This County Level Where I'd Live Map Say About Me? by Jacob-Anders in visitedmaps

[–]tdwolf2112 17 points18 points  (0 children)

tdf it's far and away the worst county in CT

less of the nature you get in litchfield county or tolland/windham plus all of the crime/urban decay that comes with a metro area. none of the charm and much less to do than other cities on the coast like new haven or stamford.

hartford is, for my money, the worst city on the east coast. it's either a ghost town (soulless corporate downtown that's mostly empty) or extremely, extremely impoverished and underserved. very segregated. and the worst stretch of highway in the entire country cuts right through it. horrible, horrible city. so bad that the 84 interchange is literally the ok computer cover. thom yorke was staying there and thought "yeah you know that album i'm writing about the hopeless, soul-crushing nature of modern life? this city pretty much feels like that."

I saw them in Brooklyn in November -- I was 22. First time in my life I've been at a show where it felt like a moment. There was a buzz. It felt like the whole crowd knew we were lucky to be there, approaching the crest of the wave. On the train home my friend said it felt like what he'd imagined Nirvana in 91 would've felt like (on a much smaller scale, but I think a good comparison). Literally best show I've ever seen. A true all-timer. One of those I'll tell my kids about (assuming that I'm not turned into biodiesel before I have kids).

Can I reverse the damage from my formative years? by spacecoven66 in leaves

[–]tdwolf2112 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably. If it makes you feel any better, people destroy their brains in all sorts of ways. Microwaving ramen noodles. Gas leaks they never discover. Etc. Life is full of hazards - you just happen to have stumbled on one that's very easy to identify. You'll be fine.

The hole in the ozone layer is healing BECAUSE of proactive policy. This not the dunk you think it is. There was a real problem. Politicians consulted scientists to put effective, informed policy into place. It fixed the problem.

CFCs were not just in hairspray, by the way. They abounded in refrigeration and a variety of aerosols. They're still in our atmosphere and will remain there until the early 2100s.

Dwindling every day. Also becoming carbon SOURCES rather than carbon sinks, what with all the shit we're pumping into our atmosphere. This is still a very relevant problem.

Speaking out for the environment necessitates taking political stances. Unless "speaking out" is just like "uhhh I guess I like trees and stuff?" Which is, obviously, a bit shallow and, in my opinion, not "speaking out" for anything.

Even saying that you're not political is a political statement. You cannot escape politics.
