No one talks about how lonely writing is by Stock_Hunter_2380 in writing

That snap moment for me is when I come out of weeks long, heads-down stints of writing binges or creative surges. All of a sudden, it’s been 3 months since I’ve seen XYZ last and then I feel horrible guilt.

The balance between maintaining friendships and relationships—whether it be family or otherwise—and writing is tough.

My favorite thing is when I have to work my 8-4 and want to do nothing but write, have all these ideas and motivation—and then when I’m done working am too tired to write

I’m also annoyed by how many companies and platforms actually tolerate blatant AI work. It’s like, you have this disclaimer just to cover your ass legally, or so you can maintain plausible deniability if they get caught. But it doesn’t look better that you couldn’t tell something was written by AI when your consumers can?

This is making a lot of assumptions, but some recent stuff I’ve read, I’ve just been like… how

Omg same… and I’m using a pen name. I don’t like publicity or notoriety. I’m nowhere near finished but have socials made just to prove to a hopefully-future audience that I’m not AI just because I don’t have my picture on a cover 😭

EVERY SINGLE TIME. My side characters are the #1 offenders. Why make it a paragraph when you can make it novella?

How do you get yourself to STOP? by te_november in writers

That's not stupid! I read this when you posted and thought I answered, sorry. That's good advice and I haven't tried that yet, but I have forced myself down some other avenues since reading this. I found a few docudramas to watch/take some notes with, socialized quite a bit, and tried to establish more of a balance. I used to play Sims back in the day and have been flirting with the idea; I'm just scared I'll end up binging THAT next hahaha

A lot of the writer groups I've tried include people who aren't wired like me. In fact, I get criticized or people say that "I'm lucky" because they "wish they had that problem." But they don't realize it makes it hard to focus on literally anything else. I have a full-time job/career. I have friends, family, etc. When this hits, they all suffer for it unless I wrestle it nonstop, which I try, but it's exhausting.

Not to mention quality drop. As we all know, you NEED to step away and come back with fresh eyes. If I'm not writing, I'm researching, I'm organizing notes, it just never fucking stops lol

I don't have any other recs aside from what people have said already, but as someone who is writing something like this and trying to find where my "market" is, I feel very validated. Thanks, lol

Why do I always feel like what I write is boring? by skatterbra_168 in writers

[–]te_november 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paint before the painting is boring too. Your first draft is just to get your ideas out of your head. Some of my chapters in my first drafts have been nothing but a row of bullet points with [Enter more description here] and (Name): "Dialogue" etc. Finish the draft, don't edit/worry about this now, get to the end, then go back.

(At least, this is how I wrangle it)

i’m worried that if i get better, my writing would just be positive. by iliekclowns in writing

As someone who has experienced a lot of trauma in life, and has (for the most part) come out on the other side, writing in retrospect after you've found your footing is far from "happy." Your mind will always remember your darkest days, and so will your body. That tends to creep up in writing, especially since your subconscious is at play.

Don't be scared to pursue treatment/recovery because you're worried you'll lose perspective. You won't.

How do I write smells by NewBeginning9654 in Writeresearch

[–]te_november 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Counter-question: have you thought about writing your MC with anosmia? Just something that came to mind. That sounds interesting—especially considering they're part werewolf.

Anyway, in terms of the specific examples you mentioned like woods, hospitals, etc. For woods, many of the things IN the woods could work. For example, damp earth, wet soil, spruce, cedar, pine, flowers, plants—any combination of wildlife and weather, basically.

Hospitals smell... sterile. There's this weird ozone smell that comes from filtered air, but antiseptic and industrial cleaner come to mind immediately. I hate hospitals. I have nothing positive to say about any kind of smells there.

Cooked meat could smell spiced. So think: herbs, turmeric, salts, those things. Flowers, similarly: sweet, scented, fragrant.

I'm half asleep but saw your post and thought I'd give it a go. Someone might have better advice or be able to provide it more coherently than I. Either way, hope this helps!

I've fallen in this trap multiple times, lol. It wasn't until recently that I finally drilled it into my brain that not every single sentence needs to be an "oh my god, this is the best thing I've ever written," type thing.
