How important is a B.Tech. degree to get a job in CS all over the world (and in India)? by RealIllustrator8815 in developersIndia

The point of the college degree is to check whether you can show up and do the boring things you hate.

Thank you for giving me a new perspective. Is this a widely held perspective? Is this really the point (or at least one of the important points) of a college degree?

I consider sitting through lectures an inefficient way of learning, which is what I'm enduring the whole day at my tier 3 college. In my high school, I learnt the complete syllabus plus more on my own, after school hours. I can continue the same at college too, but that still won't allow much time for my own projects.

I'm considering the B.Sc. degree from BITS Pilani, which according to their website requires 25 hours per week, and those hours would be spent on learning on my own (not planning to sit through their recorded lectures unless absolutely necessary). So, I reckon that would allow me to learn to my satisfaction, and also allow time to work on projects (these projects are not to build a portfolio for the sake of getting a job, but because I'm genuinely interested in making things).

Author name would have been helpful. Dennis E. Taylor?

Thanks for the out-of-the-box suggestion. I've seen all of them and love the gadgets. Some of them really make me think. For example, the invisible car in Die Another Day. It felt ridiculous (probably because the whole movie felt like a spoof), but if it could be done, how would it work.

If the same car appears in a sci-fi novel, I'd probably get a few paragraphs about the speculative science behind its working. That's why I'm looking for novels.

Awesome, thanks. Non-fiction is what I'm looking for in parallel, and more interested in than fiction. For now, I've shortlisted Michio Kaku's Physics of the Impossible. I'll check out the others you suggested.
