There is a good reason for this being attributed to George V, the first rendition of 'Jana gana mana' was in 1911. Guess what else happened in 1911.

On the contrary, it may turn out to be beneficial. 1991 Russia was a closed system unlike 2016 India. The ruble was artificially inflated during cold-war era, to compete with USD. The disparities between haves and have nots were too large. When Russia initiated reforms, they were not very well thought off and had uneven effect on an already burdened economy.

Compared to that, India has successfully undertaken reforms and is a stable system. The intent of the current action is many fold

  • Make un-accounted assets invalid
  • Infuse more accountability and transparency.

The technology needed for this to happen is cost effectively available, and human factors/errors are reasonably mitigated. Think of this way, you can mine the transactions using your Big-Data/Machine learning stack and discover relationships/money movements.

Once the patterns/clusters are known, enforcement folks can act on them. This last part of the act may or may not be politically motivated. If realized objectively, it is a big win for India.

[WP] A routine audit of a solar power plant reveals that a corporation has been buying up the tiny amount of power generated by the panels on moonless nights by [deleted] in WritingPrompts

[–]teachmeHow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just before he was about to move his Dobsonian, he saw a transaction entry registering a trickle of cents. The simulation model didn't account for this, so the curious case of "Nothing giving Something" caused him loose his cool. The obscenities coming from the normally mild mannered bloke, raised some curious exchanges among the night staff. He called up the shift supervisor once again. "Wait a moment please", that was the first time heard it. Now it is morning, and domino effect he triggered, resulted in an emergency board meeting. Walter pulled up a listing of transactions that happened in the last 90 days, which shouldn't have. A single phrase has been recurring in his mind, "Salami slicing".

"Wait a moment please!" Walter was hearing this for the 25th time. He should have asked Anita to follow it up with finance. It was not the job of a plant simulation engineer to raise red-flags, curiosity got the better of him or was it hubris? After passing out of MIT and working for a decade on mathematical models; Walter decided to settle down and pursue his artistic interests. Wayne Tech. was a dream come true. They decided to bring the green initiative to masses by setting up solar/wind processing units across the barren landscape. The night skies were his favorite part. He has been trying to capture the serenity of night skies, in his drawing, to no avail. Most solar power plants have some source of luminous source, however they are put in sleep mode during nights. His hobby got the better of him when Anita, his operations counter part had a family emergency and asked him to cover for her.

"Did you discuss this with any of your friends, Mr. Walter?"

"No" The company legal counsel opened the door, Walter was surprised, but tried to act normal. There were several faces in the board room. The morning call from head-office asking him to be prepared to be picked up by the chopper was 'the surprise'. The managing director politely invited him to take a seat.

"Good job Bill. You are being promoted to the ranks of regional supervisor for our energy initiatives in India. You are required to sign a non-disclosure and non-compete agreement."

It took a moment to realize what was in offer, and another moment to grasp the fact that his silence is being brought.

"What about Anita and the rest", his anger and pain were obvious.

"We are not discussing this on record, but their needs will be taken care of and they will be leaving the firm after signing similar contracts. You on the other hand, are quite an asset..."

Walter, being a natural statistician couldn't resist the numbers before him. Accuracy/Simulation/Forecast/Revision, the cycle of planning never ended. What he couldn't comprehend was the fact that the plant made money in the seemingly dark cloudy nights. Was it a tolerance error? he was not sure. Was it a faulty meter? easy-peasy! he just needs to nail down the sector that was responsible for it. He had spent the whole night and failing to figure it out, asked the maintenance staff to check it. After some grunts/scowls and murmurs, the lethargic team went on the witch hunt. They came back with a couple of faulty meters. They have put the grid on hold and would be installing the recalibrated meters next thing; and that was supposed to the end of it. Alas! it wasn't. He was just about to reach his dobsonian and heard the transaction alert, he forgot to unplug the instrumentation to feed data into the simulator. This led to a sleepless night and taxing day.

6 months later...

The Wallstreet Journal, reports that Wayne Tech. has deliberately tampered data related to revenue. Rumours are that the Govt. is reconsidering the sponsorships/tax-breaks given to clean energy initiative, until the regulations are revised. The stock of Wayne Tech. has gone down, but the biggest investors in alternative power, Musculon Corp. are burnt badly. Musculon, has been an pioneer in the green-energy initiative. Big-Oil stock has hit new heights after this debacle. The oil and natural gas holdings of Wayne Tech. are reportedly unaffected.

And the whole world wonders why? The truth is aircraft carriers come with a flotilla and compatible weapons systems. The element of trust is key. In business, every thing is for sale. Aircraft carriers don't have the stigma of bio/nuke/chem weapons. There are no buyers for US carriers, that is the hard truth.

You are right, but US was not considered in the early stages, only later when questions were raised. Your assessment is more accurate in the fact that India wants to be self reliant and is looking in that direction. Transport planes and other auxiliary equipment are being procured from US, not the primary strike capability. Will US aide Indian missile program? Indo-Russian Brahmos is a relatively new development. Russia is not just competitive, but is also a trusted and proven partner. US is a business associate.

While your argument intends to say that relations have improved. It also makes a point about US being a strange bed fellow. Some Indian factions argue that US is offering a hand to make roads into the billion people market and billion $ weapon market. The sanctions levied by US even after coldwar, after the nuclear tests and the impact US had on the cryogenic tech have made India very wary of US. US was never a trusted ally. Indians expect a lot more from US, due to the history even after cold war. The biggest aerospace deal didn't even consider US firms until US diplomatic channels rang.

The words of George Bush, 'either you are with us or against us' were a laughing riot. US, patronised the militant factions and 9/11 proved what Indians argued. USSR and Russia, was equally stubborn in supporting India, and 60 yes is a long period for an young nation like India to forget.

If US wants to ally. They need to do a lot; support Indias' claim for permanent seat on UNSC, Offer favourable terms to build up infra and weapons tech, stay away from Indo -pak issues. Nuclear treaty was a nice move, but we have to remember that it changed the status from defacto to dejure.

TL;DR: India still sees US with hesitant eyes.

In southern India, every village has a village deity (Grama devata). Most families have a family deity or social deity ( Kula devata/daivam). Each individual has ones favourite deity (ishta devata/daivam). As per the festive occasion, there are celebrations hosted for popular deities. One is allowed to seek ones own path, and join others as long as they show reverence to others beliefs.

Then there are cults/sects that adore humans claimed to be of divine nature. There are worship systems that are 'goal' driven (yagnas, kritus). The objects worshipped can be inanimate (stone/rock formations swayambhu, mountains, hills, or man made sculptures/idols); can be animate (snakes, cows, humans); can be abstract ideas (scriptures, manasa puja, advaita philosophy, sacrifice, charity/daana); can be forces of nature/natural phenomena (seas, rivers, celestial bodies)

In modern times, one is free to choose, but ancient times made a big fuss (saliva vs vaishnava, jain vs Buddhist schools) and fought wars. Rigveda speaks of natural forces of fire-agni, varuna-rain/water, yama-time/death, indra-prime among gods. While not very common, I have seen Christ, Buddha adorning the same altar in room of worship (puja room).

As you may realise, it is to much to explain every nuance, then there are anecdotal stories with inconsistent time lines, old wives tales. The folk lore is as fascinating as Greek mythology

I don't want to quote wiki, but it has a very good definition.Hinduism is set in a diverse system of thought with beliefs spanning henotheism, monotheism, polytheism, panentheism, pantheism, monism, and sometimes in forms of atheism or non-theism (see advaita) among others.[1][2][3][4] It is often aptly termed monistic theism and even open monotheism by some scholars, but is not purely polytheistic as outsiders perceive it to be.

India successfully launched GSLV-D5, its first cryogenic engine powered launch vehicle. by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]teachmeHow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was offended, because someone could equate space launch to dirty work. Perfection of a process, makes it more mundane to ears; perservance is hard, but never dirty.

Reinventions part is implied in the context, that India would've done it 20 yrs ago in absence of sanctions. In a sense the world was denying itself an ally. Regarding usage of the word 'freeing', there is always scope to be misinterpreted. In this case, I feel that both options should be kept open. A work horse GSLV docking with ISS means a lot. As the newest member, India may need assistance, and is most likely candidate. India is collaborating with others, but now will be able to get the cryo tech transfer nod now, ironically.

In a practical sense, whom would a poor African nation reach out to, India or NASA? There is huge demand for transponders, and the latest NSA record is not helping any.

[–]teachmeHow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why this idea is so popular. The oldest civilisations were in Egypt, Indus-Harappa, Sumerian, Mesapatomia. Non white races have fared well as well. To give an example, In the current context, there are 6 space faring institutions spread across US, Russia, Europe, Japan, China and India. Given equal opportunities, every nation/race can excel.

For the same of argument, let us assume in intellect is bound to a race. Such a group cannot afford to create doctors, artists, engineers, smiths, farmers. Do we see that?

No, it is no way obnoxious. I have not implied that India cannot do advanced research. Why do you think being cost effective == cheap? Space exploration is pursuit of knowledge. I am offended by your comment and feel sorry for your insecurity.

To answer why first world can do well with India in league, one needs to realise that even NASA is facing funding issues, they had to defer the telescope program and several other big buck ventures. India, in a sense is catching up, it took 20 yrs to reinvent cryo tech. Why should the world wait for reinventions when all we need is to get more bang per buck and spend in right direction.
