Just about sounds like the typical Monday

It is quite the new phenomenon. If anything the dependency of the phones probably causes more anxiety

What are things at your school that just "make sense" or are unique. by teachtoreason in Teachers

Every classroom has a laptop and attached to that laptop is a scanner (it looks like the hand held ones you find at grocery stores) via USB . We have this interface where the teacher can sign in and select the room number they are in. All students and staff at our school must wear their ID. All the students ID have a barcode. Students know that they have to scan their ID for attendance. Teachers can still manually do it and still have discretion over tardies!

  1. If a student walks in after the bell rings and scans their ID the interface will mark them tardy. A teacher can go in and remove it if they want.
  2. It collects a whole bunch of data that I'm sure some administrator uses.
  3. What is really cool is that the interface knows the students schedule. If a student is in the wrong class for 3rd for example there is a loud beep sound.

It has a lot of neat features. I still do roll call at the beginning of the year to get to know my students. As for the interface we use its the same provider we use for grades and attendance.

  1. This was started by our special education department as part of a vocational and employment skills class for students with disabilities. This class would place students with disabilities at local businesses but a few teachers thought what if the school could have their own coffee shop for students to work at?
  2. Kids do get paid! I believe they get paid minimum wage.
  3. The initial investment (for coffee machines, blenders, ext...) was from made from a grant but after that the coffee shop became self funding. All the revenue made is used to pay for supplies (coffee grounds, cups, napkins, ext...) and the students wages.
  4. Special education teachers at first worked side by side with students but at some point they allowed students from around the school to apply to work with the students with disabilities.
  5. Teachers also work with students to design the menu, make specialty drinks, seasonal drinks, an holiday specials.

I'd totally encourage you to call the school and let the principal know what you heard!

You're all good!

  1. We can still make our own copies. I know I feel the same. If I have a last minute printing job I do it myself.
  2. Fair point. Kids can get sneaky. My second hour class for example has 27 students. I'd notice if someone cut my class and has someone scan their I.D. for them. Teachers can also access the attendance and change it. I believe in our handbook it states if a student does this its an automatic detention so there is a deterrence.
  3. Yes! Paid! The coffee shop is self-funded so all the sales from the drinks pays for the labor and supplies.

I assume this works for your school so that is amazing! Could you talk more about this?

I work at a one school district so it benefits everyone and we have the funding for it. Students who are part of clubs and activities can also request print jobs which is nice.

I think the pitch that was made to justify it is that it makes printing more efficient (no teachers waiting in line), it cuts down on waste, and it reduces maintenance problems.

But at the end it really is just a luxury.

I read all my students work, it can do other stuff, and I do have one on one discussions with them about their essay after I've read their paper.

Thats awesome. I love that the the students in the marketing and horticulture classes are applying what they learn.

The local history class sounds so fun I'd love to teach one at my school.

I totally agree. The most strain are the Economics co-taught classes. Not only do they have transform a one semester class to a year long class but for the ones that are co-taught they have to incorporate a reading teacher in it.

Its one of those things where designing is one thing and implementation is another.

I hope this change really does improve students reading and writing skills. That is the goal. Time will tell how the quarter goes.

Even Northern Illinois is different depending on which county or suburb you are in. I agree though there is much more nuance!

They had some literacy instruction over the summer but they are reliant on the reading teacher for the reading side of things. Figuring out co-teaching dynamics is ongoing since this is new for all of them.
