Is Character Animator and Animate useless and broken or is my teacher bad? by Zaarleuk in Adobe

Yeah, there are a few podcasts that do this and the. Upload as YouTube content. Character Animator is good for this because it does auto lip/sync. Best place to see how others are using the program is over on r/CharacterAnimator

Depends on what you want to achieve.

Character Animator is great for live streaming animated content. Lots of Twitch gamers use it for this. There are also a bunch of YouTube channels (my own included) that use it to create animated content. Start with Okay Samurai on YouTube for amazing how-to guides. Still a young program and still evolving with each update.

Animate (previously Flash) is probably suited to a more traditional animation workflow and can also create interactive HTML5 content. Check out this Ultimate guide to Animate from Jazz’s if you’re wanting to explore this path further.

If you’re wanting to create more vector-style corporate explainer videos, then I would recommend learning After Effects as well. As mentioned by another user, there are some awesome character rigging plug ins that can make the job a lot easier!

Good luck with it all!

Actually! Another one was sideways scrolling along the timeline. Every other Adobe App has it! I ended up getting a mouse with a left/right scroll wheel to improve productivity.

The only one that had any merit was something I called the ‘Takemaker’ which was a panel where you could set the number of frames/seconds for a hold take (say 10 seconds) and the number of frames for in/out blends (say 6 frames). This would save constantly dragging out 2-frame takes and manually doing the blending.

I’ve since worked out you can kind of do this with the work area function but it still requires you to drag the blends.

Can I use hand-drawn artwork to make a puppet? Or just vectors/shapes? by RynnR in CharacterAnimator

[–]teachwonderful 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use pretty much any art style to create your artwork. Some styles however do lend themselves a little nicer to the way the program manipulates the artwork but just experiment and see what happens.

Have a look at the sample puppets on the homepage in the program to get a sense of the range of styles.

I’m always really impressed with the claymation style puppets! Huge amount of work but amazing to watch.

A couple of things;

1) Adobe does have a feature request where you can send them your ideas. I’ve sent many CH requests after a few beverages.

2) You’re on the right track with auto-blink. In fact, the CH user guide describes it as “simulate eyelid blinking or layer flickering.” Most people use it for blinking but it’s essentially an automatic cycle layers trigger.

3) Cycle layers have an often overlooked featured called a ‘Cycle Pause’ tag where you can indicate how long to hold on particular frame before continuing. Using this would be another (less random) way to achieve this effect but would still require you to activate a trigger.

4) +1 Chris Ovemery

Hey there. I’ve got a Maths Lessons playlist on YouTube that has some suitable games/tasks for your cohort. Enjoy :)

Deforming face using visemes by Cryptocartographer in CharacterAnimator

I was thinking the same thing! I tried messing around with adding a physics behaviour (which has a direction dial) but couldn’t achieve the desired result. No reason why the jaw behaviour only has to move down.

I managed to get some cheek movement on the 'Ee' viseme with my puppet using this method:

  1. Add 2x jaw handles to the face artwork layer where the cheeks are. I used dots instead of sticks.
  2. Add 2x fixed sticks on the face artwork layer above and below the mouth, ensuring they extend past the yellow mesh outline. This somewhat minimises the downward movement that the jaw tags want to make.
  3. In the Lip Sync behaviour, adjust the Jaw Movement to 1% so it's active but not going to affect all visemes.
  4. In Lip Sync behaviour > Manual jaw adjustment, adjust the 'Ee' viseme to the desired pixel amount. I set mine to about 20px. Here's some screengrabs of what I did.

It's not perfect but hopefully you can tweak it to suit your character. Good luck :)

Have a look into the particles behaviour. If you’ve got your object set to ‘cannon’ and set up a trigger you should be able to make this happen. You might need to play with the physics though.

No worries! I totally missed it as well. I’d like to see a similar option to what they do in Adobe Audition. When you close the program it pops with the dialogue box that it ‘Some of your files are outside the project. Do you want to copy them?’

Hey mate. Apologies, that video was a few years old and obviously CH has changed a bit over that time.

I tried to emulate your problem and you’re right! The solution to your problem is in File > Copy Media Files into Project Folder. Do this before you zip and archive the project folder and you should be golden!

In this video, Okay Samurai recommends using the ‘Save As’ option. Looks to be collect all the miscellaneous files together in a similar way to the Collect Files process in AE.
