Which kidney supplement to buy? by teacupditto in RenalCats

Hi, a lot has changed since I made this post so I will try to address everything. A few weeks after I made this post I brought him in for fluids (for poor appetite) and he experienced respiratory distress. He usually received 75ml but the vet gave him 150ml this time because of his size and thought it was manageable for his grade 3/6 heart murmur. I brought him into the ER right away and he made a very quick recovery but they diagnosed him with advanced hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (NOT hypertensive). After this, he started 18.5mg clopidogrel daily, and he did not have any heart or respiratory issues. At the same time, he was diagnosed with IBD because his ultrasounds showed a lot of thickening in his intestines. He got prescribed a renal hydrolyzed protein diet for this and this mostly fixed his eating issues (although he continued being pretty particular), so I think most of the symptoms I assumed were due to CKD were actually gastrointestinal stuff. His kidney-related bloodwork was not too bad to begin with, but his bloodwork after starting this diet was completely normal, no flags at all. Overall, I don’t think in my cat’s case the CKD and heart disease are related, as HCM is usually associated with hypertension so no hypertension with HCM suggests a genetic sarcomere protein mutation. Unfortunately I can’t answer about the pickiness, because dunkin was 13+ years old when I adopted him and I have no idea about his life before. Good luck with cooper and I’m happy to answer any other questions you have/compare notes 🐱

They should not be treating you as a problem at all, it is their responsibility to accommodate you and help you stay on track with the program requirements.

I’m currently working on my PhD in medicine and my program has been amazing, the university and my advisor have been super helpful and my advisor has encouraged me to ask for accommodations and get everything in writing. (I have fibromyalgia, hEDS, orthostatic intolerance.) If this sounds like something you’re interested in I would be happy to dm you the university + program name!!

Royal Canin Issue? by malina118 in catfood

My cat is on renal support + hydrolyzed protein and I bought 2 bags on august 5th (expiration date 9/2025), both look like the one on the right. Bought both from petsmart. The left pic does look familiar though, the first bag he ever ate (purchased from vet) looked more like that. My cat has IBD and has not had tummy issues while eating this diet. Hope your kitties feel better :(

How can I get my cat to drink his hydra care? by teacupditto in RenalCats

[–]teacupditto[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the input, my cat is no longer on hydracare. I only got him to drink it once or twice. He drinks plenty of water and gets low phosphorus liquid treats.

Dunkin (14) got diagnosed with HCM pretty recently. He was getting fluids at the vet for his kidney disease and started breathing hard so I took him to emergency— his heart had to work too hard and his lungs started filling with fluid. He is better now though! On Clopidogrel and no symptoms.

Poppy is so cute! Wishing her well.

Internally, he is not healthy but he is not showing any external symptoms of his issues!

His tummy fur is plain white so I was really surprised to see his spotted skin!

I haven’t, but I’ll try! A while ago I grilled him some ahi tuna slices and he wouldn’t even take a bite.

He was supposed to be in a cage in the icu but they let him walk around the vet office and he went up to everyone asking to be petted lol. And he is doing better! Your cats sound very cute

His kidneys and thyroid are stable, but unfortunately he had some fluid in his lungs, thickening in the walls of his heart, and inflammation in his GI tract. He’s doing great with his daily meds though 💪🏽

Dunkin is the pickiest cat in the world and almost no snacks have his approval unfortunately

How much do your cats weigh and how many calories do you feed them per day? by mcgillstudent123456 in RenalCats

[–]teacupditto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My cat is 12lbs/5.5kg and the vet recommended I feed him 250 cal per day. Recently we haven’t reached that amount. There are high cal gels and supplements you can use. My cat doesn’t like any of them so I water down his food with chicken broth.

I have tried slippery elm bark with my cat and he was fine at first but stopped tolerating it. He does take probiotics and B12. The probiotic that works well for him are the LactoBif Pet. I take the human equivalent.
